Many people feel “that they’re not getting enough back, that a college education isn’t worth enough,” said Paul Peterson, a professor of education policy and governance at Harvard University. The data says that college education is worth more than ever.”The dissonance shows how higher education has become another slice of the economy where the vibes are worse than the numbers might suggest — and risks exacerbating Democratic losses with working-class voters. Andrew Smith, director, University of New Hampshire Survey CenterThere are many reasons why improving college affordability may not register widely. Given other budget pressures — from child care to car insurance — college expenses simply might not have fallen enough to matter. New York CNN —Top pollster J. Ann Selzer will retire from the Des Moines Register’s famed Iowa Poll and the survey will “evolve” after it failed to accurately capture former President Donald Trump’s strong support in the 2024 election, resulting in a 16-point miss. Trump ultimately swept to victory over Harris in the state by a 13-point margin, winning the actual vote 56-43%. Prior to the 2024 survey, the Iowa Poll under her stewardship had been considered by many to be the methodological gold standard. As of June 2024, election forecaster Nate Silver gave Selzer an A+ rating. In an op-ed for the Register, Selzer said that her decision to part ways with the poll predated the erroneous results.

CNN’s national exit polling this year found that immigration was a strong issue for Trump in this election, but it doesn’t suggest a mandate for mass deportation. Voters gave Trump a roughly 9-point advantage over Vice President Kamala Harris on trust to handle immigration, according to the latest data. Complicating those findings is the fact that polling this year has found widely disparate levels of support for deportation. Surveys that ask respondents to choose between deportation and a path to citizenship, meanwhile, often find more support for the latter. Regardless of framing, however, national polls agree on a rise in support for deportation policies over recent years, coupled with a broader increase in nativist sentiment.

On the right, familiar conspiracy theories about voting popularized by President-elect Donald Trump continued to circulate. NewsGuard said there was “no evidence” that Starlink was used to interfere with the presidential election in Trump’s favor. As the 2024 election results were reported, social media users on the left began to speculate about Musk’s role in vote counting. “Kamala Harris left us a breadcrumb,” one TikTok user said about the updated language on the fund’s website in a video that received over 700,000 views. U.S. President Joe Biden meets with China's President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Lima, Peru, on Nov. 16, 2024. Biden was expected to urge Xi to dissuade North Korea from further deepening its support for Russia's war on Ukraine. In front of the cameras Saturday, Xi spoke to Biden — but it was unmistakable that his message was directed at Trump. After he was greeted by Xi, Biden ignored shouted questions from reporters on his concerns about the incoming Trump administration as well as North Korea. Biden is looking for Xi to step up Chinese engagement to prevent an already dangerous moment with North Korea from further escalating.

It took months for Democrats to settle on their primary presidential calendar, an extended battle that ended up booting Iowa and New Hampshire from the mix and vaulting South Carolina to the top of the pack. “The 2024 calendar will absolutely not be the calendar for 2028,” said Nebraska state party chair Jane Kleeb. Under the current plan, South Carolina went first, then Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. “The process has to be rigorous, efficient and fair, and we have to make sure that it’s open and transparent,” said a state chair who asked not to be named. Scrapping a state like South Carolina from the top of the list may only alienate those voters.

WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

The Thursday night disclosure to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed that financial firm ARC Global Investments II and its manager, Patrick Orlando, no longer own more than 5% of Trump Media stock. Trump Media reported in early September that ARC owned over 11 million shares, equating to 5.4% of the company's outstanding stock. In mid-September, a Delaware judge found that Trump Media breached an agreement with ARC and must grant it additional shares. Trump Media, which operates the Truth Social app, suffered a major selloff in late summer and by the end of September was trading near its post-merger lows. But it saw a major stock rally in October that recovered most of those losses.
