CNN —The United States formally recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as the country’s president-elect following the disputed July 28 presidential election, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Tuesday on X. “The Venezuelan people spoke resoundingly on July 28 and made Edmundo Gonzalez the president-elect. “The Venezuelan people overwhelmingly and unequivocally expressed their desire for democratic change—the publicly available voting tally sheets say so,” they said. CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

Elon Musk's X is suing Twitch, alleging that the Amazon-owned video streaming platform and other companies illegally conspired to boycott advertising on the platform formerly known as Twitter. Twitch, X, and the WFA didn't immediately respond to requests for comment made by Business Insider outside normal US business hours. Musk's own behavior on and off the platform — including famously telling advertisers who boycotted X to "go fuck yourself" — hasn't encouraged advertisers to place their budgets there, either.

Scientists previously believed that a large asteroid broke apart within the solar system, creating the meteorites that hit Earth during the Ordovician Period. The space rock is commonly referred to as a “mini-moon” due to it coming within 2.8 million miles (4.5 million kilometers) of the planet. Also, the suggested Earth ring would have “had to be the result of the disruption of a much larger body as the authors indicate in their paper,” he added in an email, so the asteroid, likely about 37 feet (11 meters) in diameter, could not have made a new ring for Earth. However, “this ring formation event we think may have happened only once in the last 500 million years.”

CNN —Paul Teal, a film and TV actor known best for his role in the CW’s teen soap ‘One Tree Hill,’ has died, according to a statement from his agent Susan Tolar Walters. Teal died on Friday “after a courageous battle with cancer,” Walters’ statement, provided to CNN on Monday, said. Teal is best known for appearing on Season 7 of the hit teen romance series “One Tree Hill” in 2010. Teal’s “One Tree Hill” co-star Bethany Joy Lenz remembered him as “the kind of guy who lit up a room without trying” in a statement posted to her Instagram page. Lenz said she first met Teal while they worked on the musical production of “The Notebook” that she produced in 2006, wherein Teal starred as the lead character Noah Calhoun, before they reconnected on the “One Tree Hill” set in 2010.
