DALLAS — Southwest Airlines raised its third-quarter revenue forecast on Thursday, announced its board authorized $2.5 billion in share buybacks and detailed a host of changes to its business model as it seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management. Southwest executives are presenting their vision for the company's future at the airline's Dallas headquarters on Thursday in an investor day presentation. Southwest executives will try to convince investors that it is on the right track to boost profits and increase revenue. A day earlier, Southwest told staff it will slash its service in Atlanta next year and could cut more than 300 flight attendants and pilots from the city in an effort to reduce costs. Elliott later told Southwest mechanics' union that it still wanted a leadership change at the top of the carrier.

Longtime value investor Bill Nygren warned that the popular benchmark S & P 500 is not as diversified as it used to be, and he is picking cheap stocks outside the dominant tech sector. Nygren, portfolio manager at Oakmark Funds for 40 years, said the technology sector has grown so powerful in the S & P 500 that the 25 or so largest names make up about half the investment. "It's not nearly as diversified as investors think it is. I think we will see investors revisit the idea of the S & P 500 being kind of the low-risk way to invest in equities," Nygren said on CNBC's " Money Movers " on Monday. Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

We started buying Home Depot shares last week as a play on housing and interest rates. Our Home Depot investment thesis is all about a pickup in housing turnover, the main driver of the home improvement retailer's sales. When rates went below 6.5% toward the end of last year, he explained, there was an immediate increase in housing activity, mortgage applications, and mortgage refinance applications. Mortgage rates with a 5% handle could be on the horizon, at least that's what Toll Brothers CEO Doug Yearley thinks. With these numbers, it's easy to see why Decker is optimistic that activity will normalize, and housing turnover and remodel activity will pick-up again.

How to trade Adobe's upcoming earnings using options

I'll break down various option trade scenarios into the earnings, focusing on one that will benefit from a big move in any direction. Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription model generates recurring revenue and maintains a solid customer base, from freelancers to large enterprises. Adobe's Document Cloud, featuring Acrobat and PDF solutions, is critical in digital document management and e-signatures. Of course, any bears out there could also use a calendar to bet on a downside move, using a $500 Sep/Jan put calendar. Combining the call and put calendar is a trade I usually refer to as a strangle swap.

Broadcom reported an earnings beat Thursday, driven by strong sales of its AI products and VMware software. We view Broadcom as one of the biggest AI beneficiaries through its networking and custom chip businesses. However, Broadcom generated $5.3 billion in free cash flow when excluding restructuring and integration cash costs in the quarter. The semi number is a slight miss versus expectations, and the difference is probably due to the non-AI business lines because AI sales are humming. Broadcom raised its full-year AI revenue forecast to $12 billion, up from prior guidance of over $11 billion.

Nvidia shares fell on about 6% Thursday, as the company's fiscal second-quarter gross margin dipped slightly, and its revenue beat was eclipsed by a backdrop of increasingly lofty expectations. The pullback in the stock on Thursday also comes after a meteoric rally, with Nvidia's shares rising more than 150% this year to date. The company also announced a $50 billion stock buyback program.
