CNN —September’s jobs report, due out Friday morning, is expected to show that the US labor market has slowed somewhat but remains on solid footing. While September’s employment data is expected to stay relatively tame, the same can’t be said for the October jobs report, which is set to be released on November 1, just days before the presidential election. The strikes and hurricane-related effects “are not going to permanently alter the trajectory of the labor market; but September is probably our last clean reading on the labor market for a while,” Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, told CNN earlier this week. The August jobs report, which showed better-than-expected estimated 142,000 payroll gains and a drop in the unemployment rate, went a long way to quell those fears. It showed that the jobs market is in “stasis,” Wells Fargo economists wrote in a note issued Tuesday.

Chip insiders have stepped up their sales of company stock this year as AI-driven demand for processing power has propelled the sector's outperformance. Huang remains Nvidia's largest individual shareholder with around 3.5% of company shares outstanding, according to data from FactSet. In all, NVDA insiders disclosed around $960 million in stock sales during the third quarter, according to data collected by VerityData. Overall, 177 chip company insiders sold stock in the third quarter, down from a recent high of 245 in Q2 of 2024, according to the Washington Service. They sold a collective 12.7 million shares in Q3, a slight increase from Q2 but just below the 13.6 million shares sold in Q1.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US grew in August, signaling an undercurrent of strength in the labor market at a time when its vitals are being carefully monitored by the Federal Reserve. There were an estimated 8.04 million job openings in August, up from an upwardly revised 7.71 million in July, according to new data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report kicks off a week chock-full of critical economic data for the US labor market, culminating with the Friday jobs report. The health of the job market has leap-frogged inflation to become the top concern for the Fed, which cut its benchmark interest rate last month for the first time in four years. Alternatively, available jobs shrank across many service sectors, including finance, and arts and entertainment.

CNN —One of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ biggest critics has announced he has a docuseries coming about the embroiled producer’s legal issues. Rapper and actor 50 Cent shared on social media Wednesday a Variety report that states his project about Combs has found a home at Netflix. “I been telling y’all about all this weird s**t, I don’t do NO puffy party’s,” 50 Cent wrote in the caption. 50 Cent has also said he believes Combs is connected to the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43, was arrested at the county courthouse in Whitesburg Thursday on suspicion of fatally shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in Mullins’ chambers. The hearing itself will be conducted by a judge in a Carter County courthouse, about 100 miles from the crime scene, according to court officials, with the Letcher County courthouse having been closed for days because of the killing. Stines’ job made him responsible for security at county courthouses, including the personal security of judges, according to the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association. CNN —US producer prices continued to cool overall in August, showing that inflation across the economy is improving. But a closely watched measure of underlying inflation remained stubbornly elevated, reflecting the bumpiness in reining in price hikes. August’s monthly increase was driven by a 0.4% gain on the services side, as goods prices were unchanged, thanks in part to falling energy prices. Economists had expected that prices would increase 0.2% on a monthly basis and 1.8% annually, according to FactSet estimates. Excluding the more volatile categories of food and energy, core PPI advanced 0.3% from July, countering a 0.2% decline seen the month before.

Falling gas prices helped bring overall inflation lower in August, dropping by 0.6% for the month and 10.3% annually. Grocery prices held flat for the month, and overall food inflation was up 0.1% in August and 2.1% annually. Economists were expecting a net gain of 160,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to fall to 4.2%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. With inflation pretty much tamed and moderating as expected, the Federal Reserve has turned its focus to the labor market (the other part of its dual mandate). Job growth has been slowing, but there were indications that the labor market was weakening under the weight of 23-year-high interest rates. A ‘place of stability’July’s shockingly weak jobs report stoked fears that the jobs market was collapsing, potentially taking the economy into a downturn. And while a rate cut is coming, the jury is still out on the exact size of that move.

CNN —The US economy appears to be on a knife’s edge, and Friday’s jobs report will be the deciding factor as to the next direction. Economists are expecting that the August report should reaffirm that the labor market is merely cooling versus outright weakening. Inflation had cooled, and the labor market was rolling right along and doing its part to keep consumers spending and the economy churning. Friday’s jobs report should provide further reassurance that the labor market is merely softening and not collapsing, economists predict. “It would be a mistake to define the labor market as being excessively weak at this stage.”Instead, the signals indicate that the labor market has moved from being extremely strong and into better balance, she said.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US shrank more than expected in July, an indication that demand for workers continues to wane amid a cooling labor market. Wednesday’s data is the first in a series of critically important economic metrics released this week about the US labor market, culminating with the Friday jobs report. As the labor market has slowed, it’s come back into balance: There are now nearly 1.1 jobs available for every person looking for one. The monthly jobs report for July showed gains of just 114,000 — far below expectations — and the unemployment rate shot to 4.3% from 4.1%. Separately, annual labor market data revisions showed job gains for the year ending March 2024 were less robust than initially thought.

CNN —The shape of the US labor market is changing, job growth is slowing and new survey data released Monday shows that Americans are starting to feel increasingly unsettled about it all. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s latest survey on consumers’ labor market experiences and expectations showed that job, wage and benefits satisfaction all sank in July. Job offer activity held steady from July 2023, and the average expected likelihood of receiving at least one job offer increased from last year. Additionally, the average reservation wage (the lowest wage one would accept for a new job) remained well above July 2023 — and significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Job growth has slowed, especially in recent months, as the US labor market has settled back into a more balanced state amid a slower-growing economic backdrop.
