Adapting to the Heat

For older adults and outdoor workers, it can be deadly. As an editor on the Well desk at The Times, I work on stories about health issues like extreme heat every day. For many health issues we report on, my thinking is: Well, that’s terrible. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay alert to the signs of heat illness. It’s called heat acclimatization, and The Times published a story about it this morning.

The frequency may also affect your gut microbiome and risk of chronic disease, a new study has found. Self-reported bowel movement frequency was separated into four groups: constipation (one or two bowel movements per week), low-normal (three to six weekly), high-normal (one to three per day) and diarrhea. The authors believe their findings are “preliminary support for a causal link between bowel movement frequency, gut microbial metabolism, and organ damage,” according to a news release. It’s also possible a person’s gut microbiome could be influencing bowel movement frequency. Bowel movement frequency also isn’t the most ideal measure of bowel function, he said.

Why should people start to think about healthy aging early? One can affect the other, but it’s really kind of the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. The country is confronting a perilous moment, internally estranged over politics and culture and as multiple foreign policy crises deepen. Biden has dedicated his term to expanding NATO to counter the Kremlin’s onslaught on Ukraine and threat to wider Europe. Fermented foods are rich in probiotics and can increase gut microbiome diversity. Mass-produced, processed, fermented foods may not be as beneficial.
