WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is warning U.S. schools and colleges that they must take immediate action to stop antisemitism and Islamophobia on their campuses, citing an “alarming rise” in threats and harassment. In a Tuesday letter, the Education Department said there's “renewed urgency” to fight discrimination against students during the Israel-Hamas war. “Hate-based discrimination, including based on antisemitism and Islamophobia among other bases, have no place in our nation’s schools,” wrote Catherine E. Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights at the department. The Education Department offered few specifics on how colleges should respond, and it did little to answer questions about where to draw the line between political speech and harassment. Last week the Education Department added language to a federal complaint form clarifying that certain forms of antisemitism and Islamophobia are prohibited by federal civil rights law.

College campuses around the U.S. braced for tensions Monday as opposing groups spoke out about whether Gaza or Israel was to blame in the escalating conflict. At Harvard University, a joint statement signed by 31 student organizations said they “hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” At the University of California, Berkeley, the local chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine issued a statement denouncing the Israeli occupation of Gaza. Matt Vogel, executive director of Hillel, the Jewish student group, at the University of Vermont, posted on Instagram that campus police would increase patrols by the school’s Hillel house this week where a vigil in support of Israel is planned. More than 45 faculty are organizing a teach-in to provide students with historical context, he said. “We keep the memories of those murdered alive and we will keep hope alive for those who are held captive,” Vogel wrote on Instagram.

Andre Fa’aoso, an incoming first-year student at Yale, has been in the United States for 12 days. He arrived from New Zealand on his own, three suitcases in tow. As he pulled his luggage through downtown New Haven, Conn., a woman handed him a flier describing his new city as crime-ridden and dangerous. It listed alarming local crime statistics and instructed students to “remain on campus,” “avoid public transportation” and “stay off the streets after 8 p.m.” Illustrated with a picture of the Grim Reaper, the flier wished students an ominous “Good luck.”But perhaps most jarring was the source of the flier, listed plainly in its text: the union that represents Yale’s own campus police. In the days since the union distributed the “survival guide” leaflets, Yale administrators and police officials have been scrambling to calm first-year students and their parents.

The fatal shooting of a French teenager of Algerian and Moroccan descent by a police officer has set off days of violent protests that have rocked France. From Nanterre, the working class Paris suburb where the teenager was shot, to the northern city of Lille and the Mediterranean city of Marseille, demonstrators have burned cars, damaged buildings and bus shelters over three nights of clashes with the authorities. Here is how the events have unfolded. In Clamart, a Paris suburb, a tramway was briefly set ablaze. Prosecutors are asking that the officer be placed in detention, and he will be presented on Thursday to investigative judges, who will hand down charges. Initial accounts, provided to the French news media by what were described as anonymous police sources, claimed that the driver had plowed into officers during the stop. Lawyers for the 17-year-old killed in the shooting have said they will file several complaints against the two officers involved in the traffic stop. The teenager’s family was also scheduled to lead a march in his memory in Nanterre in the afternoon.

Initial news reports, based on what were described as anonymous police sources, had suggested that the driver plowed into two officers with his car on Tuesday during the stop in Nanterre, west of the capital. But an unconfirmed video of the shooting that appeared later led to accusations that the police had acted too aggressively, and prosecutors in Nanterre have opened a manslaughter investigation. The video, believed to have been filmed by a witness, spread quickly on social networks and was picked up by the French news media. It shows two helmeted police officers on the left side of a yellow car that is stopped on the street. One of the officers leans onto the windshield and points what appears to be a firearm at the driver, and as the car starts moving away, a loud bang is audible.

A shooting at a Northside Hospital medical office in Atlanta this week left one woman dead and four injured. Photo: Megan Varner/Getty ImagesATLANTA—The deadly medical-office shooting here earlier this week highlighted a growing concern in the healthcare industry and state governments: violence in medical facilities. On May 3, a man opened fire with a handgun in the waiting room on the 11th floor of Northside Medical Midtown, a medical office building, according to Atlanta police. Brian Kemp had signed a new law, which partially took effect May 2, allowing hospital systems to establish their own campus police forces. Other states have also passed bills aimed at preventing attacks and increasing penalties for assaults, and more are in the works.
