The trio of blue wall states offer promise to Vice President Harris and former President Trump. She's worked to rally union workers — a key voting bloc — around her campaign. But Loge also pointed to a newly-released Emerson College poll, which showed that Harris' union support varied by state. In the Quinnipiac poll, Michigan voters gave Trump an eight-point edge (53% to 45%) on the economy. And she's aiming to win over voters — especially union workers — in smaller cities where Trump found success in 2016.

The Supreme Court may soon consider two cases that could dismantle limits on how close protesters can be to people at abortion clinics and other health care facilities. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, three abortion clinics have opened in Carbondale. “You can’t have protests on the steps of the Supreme Court,” he said. Neither petition has been scheduled to be discussed by the Supreme Court justices. It also turned away a case involving Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling that threatened access to in vitro fertilization in the state.

Wild swings in mortgage rates discouraged almost everyone from venturing out into the market. As I wrote earlier this year, a gummed-up housing market — the Ice Age I was talking about — is good for nobody. When mortgage rates hit multidecade lows during the pandemic, millions of people were able to snag or refinance their way into cheaper monthly costs. That'd be within spitting distance of what the experts at John Burns Research and Consulting, a housing-research firm, call the "magic mortgage rate." In other words, trying to predict mortgage rates — and buying or selling a home accordingly — is a fool's errand.

Trump, more so than any American president in modern history, has directly targeted individual US businesses, threatening them with everything from boycotts and canceled federal contracts to unthinkably high tariffs. Deere, the farm equipment maker founded nearly 200 years ago, became just the latest storied brand to get singled out by Trump. Bigger picture, the attack on Deere fits a broader pattern of Trump bullying companies when it suits him. “John Deere is an outstanding company. “Ultimately, it would lead to fewer sales, less revenue, less growth and fewer employees for John Deere,” said McDaniel, now a senior research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center.

It doesn’t make economic – or logistical – sense to ship many of the goods that come into East Coast ports by alternative ports of entry – or by plane. That means America could see some shortages of chocolate, alcohol, popular fruit, including bananas and cherries, and even certain cars if the strike lasts a long time. A potential strike at this and other ports on the Gulf and East costs could start early Tuesday. And the federation and its members are concerned with how long it will take to recover from even a short strike. And many of those imports come in through East and Gulf coast ports.

Dirty soda is a non-alcoholic drink combined with creams, flavored syrups or fruit. What surprised Myrick the most about dirty soda shops was the sheer quantity of choices. Agriculture is responsible for more than 10% of global carbon emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. But while agriculture is a massive carbon offender, it could now be part of a solution, as startups are trying new ways of using nature to save itself. Startups like Lithos, UNDO Carbon and California-based Eion are experimenting with several types of carbon-absorbing rocks that can accomplish what lime does while permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere at the same time. "We apply a rock dust onto farms, and that helps farmers condition the soil or make the soil better for improvements," said Anastasia Pavlovic, CEO of Eion. "Then over time, that manages to secure and sequester carbon, permanently removing it from the atmosphere."

The report says median asking rents in swing states have shot up almost 24% since 2020, with especially big increases in key states like Michigan. As rent prices have climbed, housing affordability remains stretched. AdvertisementThat's a $10,365 difference, meaning renters in swing states earn 17% less than they need to afford the typical apartment. "America's swing state voters will decide the outcome of the next presidential election based on the candidates' plans for tackling key issues including the housing affordability crisis," Fairweather said. In July, Redfin found the median monthly housing payment in swing states has nearly doubled in the last four years, rising by 92% to reach a record high of $2,161.

The fight over Wisconsin — considered a must-win for Harris as part of Democrats’ so-called blue wall — could tilt the election. With more than 200 staffers statewide, the Harris campaign touts 48 offices across Wisconsin, including some in smaller, more rural areas that Trump won in 2020. But the Trump campaign is mounting its own effort in the state. An RNC official also said the Trump campaign and the Wisconsin GOP have more than 70 staff members and 40 offices across the state.

I grew up working class and learned good work ethic from my parents. The novelty of cap erasers and Airheads from the school store wore off fast, and money didn't have much luster. In our part of Wisconsin, with its German roots and farm families, work ethic is our moral code. What 'good work ethic' means for your financesBecause it's in my DNA, I can't help but see a strong work ethic as a virtue.
