CNN —For the past decade, China has consistently ranked last in the world for internet freedom due to its all-pervading online surveillance and content control system dubbed the “Great Firewall.”But a new report out Wednesday shows that internet freedoms in China’s neighbor Myanmar are now just as lacking. The report from Freedom House, a US government-funded NGO, found that global internet freedom has declined for the 14th consecutive year. In a record 43 countries, people were physically attacked or killed in retaliation for their online activities, the report found. The Central Asian nation Kyrgyzstan showed the biggest drop in internet freedoms, according to the report, as President Sadyr Japarov ramped up efforts to silence digital media and suppress online organizing. The report also covers online disinformation campaigns and political interference in the run-up to elections, including harassment of independent researchers and fact checkers.

Growing political pressure aside, Thailand's weak economy adds to the case for the central bank to cut interest rates sooner rather than later, according to money managers. Thailand's central bank unexpectedly cut its key interest rate at a policy review on Wednesday, a move long called for by the government as needed to revive a sluggish economy with inflation below target. The Bank of Thailand's monetary policy committee voted 5 to 2 to reduce the one-day repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 2.25%, after the rate had been a decade-high of 2.50% since September 2023. The previous change in policy was a 25 basis point rate rise in September last year. The World Bank has forecast the economy will grow 2.4% this year and 3.0% next year.

The surrogacy business boomed in Cambodia after it was put under tight restrictions in neighboring Thailand, as well as in India and Nepal. She said the seven Philippine women and four Vietnamese women who were caught in the raid but who were not pregnant would be deported soon. Thailand’s foreign ministry said it was “profoundly saddened” by the death of a Thai worker in northern Israel on Friday, according to a statement. The headline consumer price index rose 0.61% in September from a year earlier, after August's annual increase of 0.35%, and missed a forecast rise of 0.80% in a Reuters poll. Thailand's annual headline inflation quickened in September due mainly to higher prices of diesel and some vegetables, the commerce ministry said on Monday, and was still below the central bank's target range of 1% to 3%. The headline inflation rate is expected to be 1.25% in October and about 1.49% in the final quarter of 2024, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the trade policy and strategy office, told a press conference. In the January to September period, average annual headline inflation was 0.20%. The commerce ministry on Monday revised its forecast for the full year to between 0.2% to 0.8%, from between zero and 1% seen earlier.

More than 90% of travelers from Southeast Asia say that gun prevalence in the United States influences whether they will visit, according to a new survey. However, nearly 80% said the likelihood that they would attend a mass gathering — such as a concert or music festival — would be greatly or moderately affected by the number of guns in the United States. Half of those surveyed said they have been to the United States. But a prior visit didn't calm Singaporeans' worries about gun violence to the same extent as other nationalities. Another 5% said they will out-and-out refuse to visit if Trump wins, with 2% saying the same about a Harris win.
