New York CNN —Hurricane Milton passed through Florida days ago, but the devastating storm is still causing chaos at gas stations. Hundreds of gas stations in Florida still don’t have gas, including roughly half of the stations in the hard-hit Tampa area. Meanwhile, the number of gas stations without gas has fallen sharply. This represents a significant improvement, although it still means that more than 1,300 Florida gas stations remain dry five days after Hurricane Milton made landfall. Florida gas stations are out of fuel following the storm that made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in the Siesta Key area of Florida, causing damage and flooding throughout Central Florida.

Here’s the latest:• Gas stations still waiting for fuel: Just under 30% of the state’s gas stations have no fuel as of early Sunday, according to the monitoring website GasBuddy.com. In the hard-hit Tampa-St. Petersburg area, more than three quarters of stations, 77%, are out of gas. Some people told CNN they’ve had to use word of mouth to find out which stations have gas. Paula Cast told CNN her family visited four or five different gas stations Friday, but everything was closed. Then on Saturday, they got a call from one of their friends saying a Wawa station had gas.

Restoring power, clearing debris and distributing fuel are now the top priorities in Florida as the state continues to reel in the wake Hurricane Milton. Parts of western and central Florida continue to face the risk of significant flooding in creeks and rivers continue to rise. In a “major” flood stage, the agency expects “extensive inundation of structures and roads,” with the possible need to evacuate people and transfer property to higher elevations. Water levels are expected to continue rising in the coming days, posing a major flood risk in low-lying parts of the county, officials said. Parts of central Florida are also facing elevated risks of flooding due to high water levels in the St. Johns River and Ocklawaha River.

Most of the residents living in Hunters Point heeded the mandatory evacuations ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall but Fulford, 76, stayed behind with wife, Sueann, just as they did during Hurricane Helene last month. The prospect of installing a new roof atop Tropicana Field comes at a difficult time for local governments, which are already committed to building a new Rays stadium in time for the 2028 season. So whatever investment is put into Tropicana Field now would be used by the Rays for only three more seasons. A rep for the company that installed the stadium’s roof, Geiger Engineers, did not return messages from NBC News seeking comment Thursday. That roof was “well past its intended service life,” Geiger Engineers principal David Campbell told the newspaper. Tropicana Field opened to the public in 1990 and still had its original roof.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Two days after Hurricane Milton flooded The Standard at 2690 Apartments, representatives from the company that manages the 16-acre complex showed up Friday and barred tenants from returning to their homes. Before Milton arrived, McCoy said she noticed a maintenance worker boarding up the complex’s leasing office. "My neighbors ended up doing it for me.”As for the property managers, McCoy said, “They just were out like that. Police at the complex told reporters they rescued at least 500 other residents the same way. Samantha Hood, 32, who has lived at the complex for four years, said many of the tenants are poor families with children who live paycheck to paycheck.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for Tampa and St. Petersburg that lasted until 2:30 a.m. Preliminary measures on Wednesday indicated that 7 inches had fallen in St. Augustine, 7.38 inches in Titusville and 3.05 inches in Daytona Beach, according to the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane Milton has moved back out to sea, but additional rainfall and flooding are expected to persist through Thursday in parts of eastern and central Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

TAMPA, Fla. — 54-year-old Joseph Malinowski, who has been dubbed “Lieutenant Dan” on social media, has survived record-breaking Hurricane Milton on his 20-foot sailboat. As Hurricane Milton was bearing down on Tampa, Malinowski posted to his social media account to soothe his newfound audience’s worries, even as his boat rocked and shaked against increasing wind and rain. “I’m doing great!” he told NBC News on Wednesday around 7 p.m., approximately two hours before the storm was set to make landfall.
