Israel’s military has issued 1,126 arrest warrants for ultra-Orthodox conscripts who have not responded to drafting orders, in a move likely to fuel discontent over a controversial decision to remove their decades-long exemption from service. The move is likely to fuel the discontent that has roiled the country since a Supreme Court ruling in June that ultra-Orthodox Jews could not be exempt from military service, as they have been since the founding of Israel. ‘Death rather than draft’Anger had been simmering among the ultra-Orthodox community even before the news of the arrest warrants. For many Haredis, the idea that they would be pulled from studying scripture and drafted into Israel’s military is simply out of the question. CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Las Vegas police are investigating after an officer fatally shot a 43-year-old father who had called 911 for help during a home break-in. Durham reported that he was inside the house with his 15-year-old daughter and he was going to lock himself in a bathroom, Koren told reporters Thursday. Boudreaux was arrested during the incident, Koren said. She appears to have had some relationship with Durham, Koren said, but police provided no clarity as to what that relationship might be. The Texas Supreme Court has ruled against lawmakers who used their subpoena power to halt the execution of a death row inmate for his daughter’s “shaken baby” death, paving the way for it to proceed. "Categorically prioritizing a legislative subpoena over a scheduled execution, in other words, would become a potent legal tool that could be wielded not just to obtain necessary testimony but to forestall an execution," the Texas Supreme Court said in its ruling Friday. But the Office of the Attorney General quickly appealed the subpoena, which was supported by a district court judge's temporary injunction that halted Roberson's execution. After the state's highest criminal court agreed with the attorney general's office, allowing Roberson's execution to continue, lawmakers then petitioned their case to the Texas Supreme Court. "Given the overwhelming new evidence of innocence, we ask the State of Texas to refrain from setting a new execution date."

President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he will nominate Todd Blanche, one of his criminal defense lawyers, to be deputy attorney general. The statement noted that Blanche has experience working for the Justice Department — something former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Trump's choice for attorney general, does not have. Blanche was Trump's lead lawyer when he stood trial on charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment this year. If Blanche's nomination is confirmed before Gaetz's, he could serve as acting attorney general while Gaetz goes through the process. He will also nominate D. President Joe Biden made student debt relief a focus of his administration. The mass forgiveness he promised on the campaign trail was struck down by the Supreme Court, and some of his other debt relief initiatives, like the Saving on a Valuable Education plan and his negotiated rulemaking plan, are currently tied up in court. But his administration has still managed to clear $166.5 billion in student loans, according to Department of Education data. Borrowers had an average of $38,207 of debt forgiven.
