Read previewTaiwan's new long-range cruise missiles are slow and easy to shoot down, Chinese media reports — claims whose truth depends on many unknowns. In the game, Taiwan used its missiles against the Chinese invasion fleet in the Straits of Taiwan, rather than striking ports. Could Taiwan's long-range cruise missiles penetrate Chinese defenses? As the Ukraine war has shown, subsonic cruise missiles can be intercepted by anti-aircraft missiles such as the U.S. Patriot and Russia's S-300. The automated Phalanx system features Gatling guns that can fire up to 4,500 20-millimeter rounds a minute, engaging projectiles or other targets at extremely close range. Tom Karako, director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said it was “concerning” that the Houthi missile got so close to a US warship. Whether it comes into further use in the current hostilities in the Red Sea remains to be seen. And on Thursday, US forces shot down a Houthi drone over the Gulf of Aden and destroyed a surface drone in the Red Sea, it said. Meanwhile, two ballistic missiles launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen missed targets in the Red Sea, Central Command said.

Ukraine has shared extraordinary footage of what it says is the sinking of a Russian ship. The claimed drone attack on Wednesday night sank the Ivanovets, Ukraine said. AdvertisementUkrainian forces claim to have sunk a Russian Black Sea Fleet warship in Crimea using home-developed naval drones, sharing spectacular footage that appears to show the attack. Ukraine has developed at least two naval attack drones, including the Cossack Mamai — capable of firing missiles — as well as the fast-moving Sea Baby. If confirmed, the loss of the ship would be a considerable boost for Ukraine, whose performance against Russia's Black Sea Fleet has been one of its most celebrated successes of the war.

What happens during a sonic boomAn artist's concept shows the X-59 in flight, a design being developed by NASA and Lockheed Martin to create a faster-than-sound plane with a quieter sonic boom. NASA/Lockheed MartinA sonic boom occurs when an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound. That shock wave is what you hear as a sonic boom. A sonic boom can generate sounds of up to 110 decibels, similar to a thunderclap or explosion strong enough to shatter windows and cause tremors. The Quesst mission seeks to reduce "the loudness of a sonic boom reaching the ground to that of a gentle thump, if it is heard at all," the agency said.

The Houthi forces in Yemen have just one jet, an old F-5. The US has launched airstrikes on the Houthis — which an F-5 probably can't do much about. AdvertisementThe Houthi rebels in Yemen have one of the world's strangest fighter jet fleets — a single, aged F-5 fighter jet. The claim was made by a US official to Chris Gordon, who covers the Pentagon for Air & Space Forces Magazine. Testing in Area 51Entrance to Area 51 TIFOIts development was highly classified, taking place at Area 51 in Nevada and hidden away from Soviet spy satellites. Area 51 workers were provided with rosters of Soviet satellites, detailing when certain ones would fly over the Nevada test site so they could conceal the prototypes. "It was like a bus schedule, and it even told us whether it was an infrared satellite or what type it was," TD Barnes, a former hypersonic flight specialist at Area 51, told National Geographic in 2011. In addition to the sheds, workers also crafted decoy prototypes out of cardboard and other materials to cast shadows and deceive the satellites. At least one of the A-12's numerous test flights didn't go according to plan, crashing in the desert outside Area 51.

The big storyDon't let the weekend get away from youJLPH / Getty ImageWeekends seem like such a simple concept — two days away from work. Plan "anchor events" for your weekendAdvertisementVanderkam defined an anchor event as something you want to do during the weekend — any activity that's loosely planned ahead of time. She recommends thinking of the weekend in five chunks: Friday night, Saturday day, Saturday night, Sunday day, Sunday night. People can experiment with balancing responsibilities and free time, she said, since creating a fulfilling weekend is so individualized and requires work. Haselberger recommends that people ask themselves: What can you do on the weekend that is outside of something that you would normally do to make the weekend feel like it was a prolonged period of time?

CNN —Mary Cleave, the NASA astronaut who in 1989 became the first woman to fly on a space shuttle mission after the Challenger disaster, has died at the age of 76, the space agency announced on Wednesday. “For me, space flight was great, but it was gravy on top of getting to fly in great airplanes,” she told NASA. Getting to orbitOn her first mission, flying on NASA’s Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1985, Cleave became the 10th woman to travel into space. Over the course of her two shuttle missions, Cleave spent more than 10 days in orbit. There’s a difference between ground speed and speed in the air (indicated air speed, essentially the speed of the plane in relation to the air around it). The jet stream explainedThe jet stream is a “core of strong winds around five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface, blowing from west to east,” as the UK’s Met Office describes it. Seven miles above the planet’s surface is equivalent to around 37,000 feet – which means that aircraft at cruising altitude slip easily into the jet stream. “This increase in the temperature gradient is amplifying the speed of the jet stream, which is driven by temperature differences. Either way, these planes are saving time and money.”The jet stream is making planes go around 200mph faster than average.
