Now, as an adult, Prag says expat parents should help their kids develop lasting connections. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Sally Prag, 49, from the UK, about traveling with her parents during her childhood. I'd advise parents raising kids abroad to help their children maintain long-term friendships and hobbies. In Tanzania, we lived close to a mud hut village, and I knew the residents lived differently from us. My advice to expat parents is to help your kids keep up long-term friendships and hobbiesBecause of my upbringing, I'm a confident traveler.

Over 400 economists and ex-officials endorse Kamala Harris

New York CNN —More than 400 economists and former high-ranking US policymakers are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and her vision for the American economy, according to a document announcing the endorsement seen by CNN. “The choice in this election is clear: between failed trickle-down economic policies that benefit the few and economic policies that provide opportunity for all,” the endorsement document reads. Harris plans to roll out new policies on what she calls the “opportunity economy” during a speech in Pennsylvania, another key battleground state, on Wednesday. Several notable economists threw their weight behind Harris, including University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers and Claudia Goldin, who won the Nobel Prize last year for tracking women’s labor participation and the evolving wage gap. The endorsement argued that Harris has a “proven track record of economic leadership,” crediting her with efforts as vice president to lower costs, cut taxes and raise wages.

In a Monday-morning appearance on CNBC, Evercore founder Roger Altman praised the Fed for delivering "nearly perfect" economic conditions, citing strength in equities, profits, and employment. Only inflation — which still hovers above the Fed's 2% target rate — is holding off an official soft landing declaration, he said. AdvertisementAlthough there are some concerns rate cuts will reignite inflation, Altman is expecting to see a slowdown this week when new consumption-expenditures data is released. Related stories"I think what essentially happened was that the Fed saw the path on inflation steadily downward as more certain than the path on labor markets, a little more uncertainty about labor markets," Altman said. "So it took a stronger step to fortify labor markets, and went for 50."

CNN —Almost three decades ago, Richard Hays, a United Methodist minister and the soon-to-be dean of Duke Divinity School, wrote what quickly became the go-to traditionalist Christian argument against same-sex marriage. Fuller Theological Seminary, where Christopher Hays is a professor, also demands agreement with a faith statement that opposes same-sex marriage. Even as support for same-sex marriage has plateaued in the last few years, recent surveys from Gallup find that more than one in five Gen Z Americans identify as LGBTQ, and nearly 90% of Americans under 30 years old support same-sex marriage. The reversal from Hays certainly will not settle the debate among Christians when it comes from same-sex marriage. But I hope it makes opponents of same-sex marriage at least pause and wonder — is there a faithful path forward that makes room for people like me?

In the U.S. overall this year, a concerning, though not unprecedented, number of dengue, EEE and West Nile cases have been reported. “With climate change, we’re basically extending the mosquito season,” said Chantal Vogels, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. In the U.S., cases have outpaced those of West Nile virus, which is typically more prevalent. So it is noteworthy that Democratic and Republican leaders both appear to want to establish a sovereign wealth fund to help the United States pay for stuff. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which manages about $925 billion in assets, reported a $36.8 billion profit for 2023, according to Reuters. This isn't the first time Washington has toyed with the idea of a sovereign wealth fund. Last March, a group of bipartisan lawmakers led by Sen. Angus King and Sen. Bill Cassidy began discussing a sovereign wealth fund to pay for Social Security. The White House's interest in a sovereign wealth fund stems partly from its desire to compete with China, which has multiple state-owned funds itself.
