CNN —Round discs of barren dirt known as “fairy circles” look like rows of polka dots that can spread for miles over the ground. Fairy circles were previously spotted only in the arid lands of Southern Africa’s Namib Desert and the outback of Western Australia. The results showed 263 dryland locations where there were circular patterns similar to fairy circles in Namibia and Australia. Fairy circles’ mysterious originsThe study authors also compiled environmental data where circles were spotted, collecting evidence that might hint at what causes them to form. But the question “What shapes fairy circles?” is complex, and factors that create fairy circles may differ from site to site, the study authors reported.

“About 98.7 percent of human ancestors were lost at the beginning of the bottleneck, thus threatening our ancestors with extinction,” the scientists wrote. But outside experts said they were skeptical of the novel statistical methods that the researchers used for the study. The studies all take advantage of the same basic facts of our biology: every baby is born with dozens of new genetic mutations, and some of those mutations can be handed down over thousands or even millions of years. By comparing genetic variations in DNA, scientists can trace people’s ancestry to ancient populations that lived in different parts of the world, moved around and interbred. They can even infer the size of those populations at different times in history.

CNN —The Lamborghini Lanzador is only a concept car for now, but the Italian supercar maker says it offers a preview of the brand’s very first fully electric model which will go into production in 2028. With no space needed for a gas engine — in a gas-powered Lamborghini sports car, it would be behind the seats — the Lanzador has small back seats. Other automakers, like Rimac and Automobili Pininfarina (which uses Rimac technology), already sell electric two-seat supercars costing millions of dollars. Porsche — which like Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen Group — took a similar approach with its first EV. Lamborghini has committed to selling only “electrified vehicles,” meaning either plug-in hybrid or fully electric, by the end of 2024.

The impact of new weight loss treatments is being felt well beyond the health-care industry . During the second quarter, which beat expectations , shoppers were still focused on health and wellness, CEO Doug McMillon said Thursday. Some companies already bar weight loss medications from their insurance plans to keep costs down. Executives said it was tied to an increase in specialty drug use for weight loss and diabetes. Eli Lilly's Mounjaro hasn't yet been approved for weight loss, though some people are taking it off label for that reason.

The Italian brand, a subsidiary of Germany's Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), sold 5,341 cars between January and June, up 4.9% on the same period last year. Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said it was not easy to make forecasts due to market uncertainties, including with raw materials, but added that selling 10,000 cars this year was a "feasible goal". Rival Ferrari (RACE.MI), whose headquarters is less than 40 kms (25 miles) away, shipped more than 13,200 cars last year. Lamborghini is investing 1.9 billion euros to 2027 in its shift to hybrid and electric cars, but further investments are expected. For all the blame Facebook has received for fostering extreme political polarization on its ubiquitous apps, new research suggests that the problem may not strictly be a function of the algorithm. Doing so during the three-month period, "did not significantly alter levels of issue polarization, affective polarization, political knowledge, or other key attitudes," the authors wrote. When altering the kind of content these Facebook users were receiving to presumably make it more diverse, they found that the change didn't alter users' views. "However, the data clearly indicate that Facebook users are much more likely to see content from like-minded sources than they are to see content from cross-cutting sources." The polarization problem exists on Facebook, the researchers all agree, but the question is whether the algorithm is intensifying the matter.

When Stephan Weishaupt began looking for a weekend home outside Toronto, buying a 19th-century log cabin was the furthest thing from his mind. Mr. Weishaupt, the founder of Weishaupt Design Group and the president of a furniture company called Avenue Road, had long been focused on all things modern. When a friend told him about a 100-acre property with rolling hills, forests and ravines in Caledon East, Ontario, he was interested only in the land. “I walked some of the trails and fell in love with it,” Mr. Weishaupt, 45, said. But “the roof was sagging, and it was in dire need of repair,” Mr. Weishaupt said.

But the lure for OCI and others of making ammonia with a smaller carbon footprint is a business with potential beyond the farm. is the question, and I think it's a good question," OCI CEO Ahmed El-Hoshy told Reuters, when asked why his company is betting on producing so-called "blue ammonia." But even with U.S. support, blue ammonia economics hinge on further government incentives. If utility premiums don't emerge, OCI plans to use its Texas blue ammonia to make fertilizer in The Netherlands, where the company has under-utilized its plants due to high natural gas prices. OCI's Texas plant, to start production in 2025, will produce 1.1 million metric tons annually.

Goldman Sachs' dealmaking crown slips a bit

Refinitiv and Bloomberg say Goldman Sachs lost the top M&A ranking for the first half for the first time in 5 years. When mega deals return, Goldman is poised to gain market share. It is a difference of less than $8 billion, or the size of one large deal, but it has cost Goldman Sachs a crown. For the mega deals, or those valued at more than $10 billion, business has been even slower, with a 52% decline. But if that's the bottom of the deal cycle, then Goldman stands to benefit when mega mergers come roaring back.
