CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — With two weeks to go before the South Carolina Republican primary, Nikki Haley is trying to challenge Donald Trump on her home turf while the former president tries to quash his last major rival’s narrow path to the nomination. Haley, 52, has called throughout her campaign for mental competency tests for politicians, a way to contrast with 77-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden. Harlie O’Connell, a longtime South Carolina resident who backs Haley, said she’s excited to vote in the presidential primary for a woman from her home state. While she plans to support in November whoever wins the GOP nomination, she said she would prefer someone younger. Organizers expecting a capacity crowd set up screens outside where an overflow crowd would be able to watch Trump’s appearance.

Nikki Haley square off in the South Carolina GOP presidential primary later this month. Here's what some of them had to say:Joy Rendulic was hesitant when her husband first suggested a move to South Carolina. He has lived in Hartsville — about two hours inland from the South Carolina coast — all his 70 years except for a stint in the Navy. “If he’d just shut up and, you know, got off Twitter and that kind of stuff, he’d have made a great president,” Pierce said. In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president. Madrid believes Biden’s record on immigration is the biggest obstacle to him harvesting support among the Republicans uneasy about Trump. Lake doesn’t agree that any single issue is critical for Biden with the kind of GOP voters who have rallied to Haley.

The heightened concerns over the RNC’s latest financial problems are just the tipping point in a yearslong struggle between Trump and the committee. Trump has asked allies and aides in the past why the RNC must remain neutral in the GOP presidential primary. Trump had previously endorsed both Gruters and Whatley for officer positions at the RNC, but both lost their respective bids. Still, two people familiar with Reed’s departure stressed that his move to the private sector was unrelated to the tensions between Trump and McDaniel. Trump and the RNC need each otherDespite the broader tensions that are playing out both privately and publicly, the Trump campaign and the RNC have a lot to gain from each other.

She has also discussed those plans with Trump, according to a person a familiar. RNC spokesperson Keith Schipper told CNN in a statement that “nothing has changed. CNN reported earlier Monday that North Carolina Republican Party chairman Michael Whatley and South Carolina Republican Party chairman Drew McKissick are among the names being floated by Trump’s team, according to two sources with knowledge of internal discussions. FORT LAWN, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina state Sen. Mike Fanning likes to talk to people. Politically, South Carolina varies from its neighbors. Think about that for a second.”Second, Haley is almost certainly right: tariffs can be a regressive tax, borne largely, if not exclusively, by ordinary American workers. The moderate, non-partisan Tax Foundation found that the existing Trump tariffs will bring in a mere $74 billion in revenues over ten years, while costing jobs, lowering growth and depressing American wages. Haley is right. Who is likely to benefit most from any future Trump tax cuts? Haley is right; Trump wins.

Read previewFormer UN ambassador Nikki Haley's popularity has taken a hit in her home state of South Carolina, a worrying sign ahead of a critical primary race against former President Donald Trump, a new poll reported. According to a Washington Post-Monmouth University poll, Haley's popularity has dropped 31 percentage points in just under five months. FiveThirtyEight's weighted average show Trump with a roughly 31-point lead in South Carolina. Still, Haley's standing among South Carolina Republicans underlines Trump's strength in the race. While she may be the state's former governor, the former president has also secured the endorsements of almost the entire South Carolina congressional delegation.

CNN —On Wednesday, the chief executives of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap and Discord testified before the Senate about what they’re doing to protect kids from harm online. In the leadup to the testimony, tech companies announced new initiatives to protect kids. The Stop CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) Act of 2023 would make it possible to hold tech companies civilly liable for hosting child sexual abuse material. This would be an important way of incentivizing tech companies to do more to protect kids from sextortion and other forms of online exploitation. Tech companies also have a lot more work to do.

But I do still love Trump.”The winner of South Carolina's Republican primary has won the nomination all but one time since 1980. Haley, as a state legislator in 2010, trounced older, more established candidates in a Republican primary on her way to winning two gubernatorial elections. On paper, South Carolina offers the broad Republican coalition Haley has sought. South Carolina has a large presence of every Republican faction: evangelicals and social conservatives; anti-tax Tea Party activists; national security hawks; business-minded traditionalists. South Carolina voters do not register by party and choose which major party primary to participate in each election cycle.

Few places have shown a history of showcasing dirty tricks like South Carolina, the state that could once again have the final word in a presidential race. It was in South Carolina that then-Sen. Here are five takeaways from the New Hampshire primaries:Trump wants Haley out — nowIn what were expected to be celebratory remarks Tuesday night in New Hampshire, Trump instead sounded annoyed that Haley had not yet dropped out of the Republican primary race. CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Donald Trump has picked up another endorsement from Nikki Haley's home state of South Carolina, with Rep. Nancy Mace backing the former president in this year's GOP presidential primary. Mace had stayed out of the 2024 Republican primary as two fellow South Carolinians — Haley and Sen. Tim Scott — entered the race last year. On Monday, a day ahead of the New Hampshire primary, Mace told The Associated Press that she was backing Trump over Haley, who lives in her congressional district and supported her in 2022 against a Trump-backed challenger. Over the weekend, Trump was joined by a slew of South Carolina leaders as he campaigned in New Hampshire, seen as yet another blow from South Carolina against Haley. Just two years ago, Mace and Haley were aligned in a congressional primary that tested Trump's heft in South Carolina, where his own 2016 presidential primary win helped cement his nomination.

Ron DeSantis is ending his 2024 presidential campaign. DeSantis entered the race with lofty expectations, with many conservatives seeing him as a next-generation GOP figure. The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

COLUMBIA, S.C. The measures' consideration highlights the continued interest among conservative lawmakers in targeting issues impacting transgender residents after last year's wave of high-profile bills. South Carolina is one of the few Southern states without a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. At least 22 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and many of those states face lawsuits. Leon Wildes, a prominent immigration lawyer best known for his landmark, yearslong fight in the 1970s to prevent John Lennon from being deported and enable the former Beatle to receive permanent residency in the U.S., has died at age 90. Thanks to Wildes' ingenuity and the shocking twists of politics in the 1970s, Lennon's deportation was delayed and ultimately revoked. His honors included the Edith Lowenstein Memorial Award for excellence in advancing the practice of immigration law and the Elmer Fried Excellence in Teaching Award. He attended Yeshiva College as an undergraduate and became interested in immigration law after working with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in the late 1950s.
