Trump’s Loss of Loyalty

But for Trump, Ellis' plea was especially damaging, since it underscored the steady evaporation of something Trump has demanded from staff and associates since his days as a New York businessman: loyalty. "If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. The three former Trump lawyers who pleaded guilty in Georgia were facing some serious potential consequences, he noted, including not just time behind bars but the loss of their law licenses – and that may take priority over honoring Trump's demands for loyalty. "This is not about Donald Trump vs. Michael Cohen," Cohen said as he entered the New York courtroom. You saw Donald Trump try to walk away from Sidney Powell – despite documentary evidence that he had called her his lawyer.

Ellis pleaded guilty to one felony count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. She was censured in Colorado in March after admitting she made repeated false statements about the 2020 election. Bail bondsman Scott Graham Hall pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges and got five years of probation. Ellis and the other three pleaded guilty under Georgia’s first offender law. Jenna Ellis, the right-wing attorney who worked on the Trump 2020 presidential campaign, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a criminal charge in the Georgia election interference case. Ellis is the latest co-defendant of former President Donald Trump to take a deal with prosecutors, joining Sidney Powell and two others. Ellis, 38, pleaded guilty in Fulton County Superior Court to one count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. The charge related to false claims of voter fraud that were made to members of the Georgia Senate at a hearing in early December 2020. In a tearful statement before Judge Scott McAfee, Ellis expressed regret for her actions in the wake of Trump's loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

But the case that may pose the greatest threat to Trump’s candidacy in 2024 is not one of his criminal cases. We are confident the rule of law will prevail, and this decision will be reversed — whether at the Colorado Supreme Court, or at the US Supreme Court,” a Trump campaign spokesperson said. But the Colorado case could be the one that makes it to our nation’s highest court. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was intended to keep former Confederates from holding office after the war. The state’s Supreme Court rejected Griffin’s final appeal to overturn the decision earlier this year.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump claimed Sidney Powell was “never” his attorney in a social media post Sunday, three days after she pleaded guilty in the Georgia election subversion case. Trump publicly announced on November 15, 2020, that he “added” Powell to his “truly great team” of lawyers working on the election. Her attorneys said she “did not represent President Trump or the Trump campaign” because she never signed an “engagement agreement” to be their attorney. Her name was never on any court filings from the Trump campaign, Powell’s lawyers pointed out. In her guilty plea, Powell admitted her role in the January 2021 breach of election systems in rural Coffee County, Georgia.

Opinion: Uncomfortable reality for Biden

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He didn’t live to see the allies’ victory in World War II that year or the conference in San Francisco that month that established the United Nations. But his diplomatic efforts to meet with Arab leaders came undone after a devastating explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Biden himself initially supported the US 2003 war in Iraq only to end up as the president who ordered the US pullout of Afghanistan. “This is the politics that Donald Trump’s rhetoric has wrought among his supporters in the Republican Party,” wrote Avlon.

The pleas are a stark display of the reality that the Georgia case against Trump and his co-defendants is getting stronger. For two prominent Trump co-defendants – Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro – the looming five-month trial, potentially resulting in a yearslong prison sentence, appears to have spurred them into flipping. Chesebro directly implicated Trump in a criminal conspiracy, and his plea establishes for the first time that the fake electors plot was illegal. Trump is the only person charged thus far in the federal case, but both Chesebro and Powell are unindicted co-conspirators. Sadow brushed off the threat of possible testimony from Chesebro and Powell at Trump’s eventual trial on the Georgia election subversion charges.

Sidney Powell , a public face of Trump’s attempts to challenge the election results in 2020 and 2021, pleaded guilty Thursday. The former Trump attorney willavoid jail time but agreed to testify as a witness and pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors for conspiracy to commitintentional interference, downgraded from felony charges she had faced. He pleaded guilty Friday to a single felony, conspiracy to commit filingfalse documents. Trial dates have not been set, and Trump has pleaded not guilty. But guilty pleas, Williams said, are now evidence that crimes were committed as Trump tried to make Joe Biden’s 2020 victory disappear.

Chesebro is the second lawyer affiliated with Trump’s 2020 campaign, and third co-defendant, to cut a deal with prosecutors, after Sidney Powell , a legal adviser who played a leading role in the effort to reverse Trump’s election loss, struck a similar deal Thursday. Powell is also expected to cooperate with the prosecution.

ATLANTA (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin Friday for the first defendant to go to trial in the Georgia case that accuses former President Donald Trump and others of illegally scheming to overturn the 2020 election in the state. CHESEBRO WILL BE TRIED BY HIMSELFUntil Thursday morning, Chesebro was set to go on trial alongside Powell after each filed a demand for a speedy trial. On Monday, prospective jurors will be called in groups of 14 for individual questioning. Then the prosecution and the defense attorneys will have one hour per group of 14 prospective jurors to ask questions. McAfee recently said he would tell prospective jurors during jury selection that it's likely to take up to five months.

Chesebro was the third of 19 codefendants in the Georgia case to make a deal, a monumental legal and personal blow to Trump, who highly prizes loyalty among his associates. Another former Trump lawyer, Sidney Powell, entered into a plea deal Thursday, following a September deal by a lesser-known bail bondsman, Scott Hall. While other defendants – especially Trump – have pushed for later trial dates, Chesebro insisted on his right to a speedy trial. Jury selection for his case started Friday, and Chesebro entered into the plea deal hours after potential jurors filed into the courthouse. The Chesebro deal could be the third domino to fall against Trump and other high-level defendants such as former Trump lawyer and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

A former prosecutor saidTrump should be worried about his ex-attorneys' plea deals in Georgia. Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro struck deals in the Georgia 2020 election interference case. He emphasized that it's "real bad with a capital B" for Trump. Additionally, Bederow said, the plea deals will likely bolster the public's perception in the legitimacy of the charges and could prompt other co-defendants in the case to turn on Trump. Trump's team downplayed the significance of the plea deals in a statement.

It comes one day after former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell also pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. Fulton County prosecutors recommended that he serve 5 years of probation and pay $5,000 in restitution, and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee imposed that sentence at Friday’s hearing. Three defendants have now pleaded guilty in the sprawling racketeering case: Chesebro, Powell and Georgia-based bail bondsman Scott Hall. Powell and Hall both admitted their roles in the January 2021 breach of election systems in rural Coffee County, Georgia. At a hearing earlier this week, Fulton County prosecutors and attorneys for Chesebro haggled over how many politically charged questions should be included.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign attorney Kenneth Chesebro is shown in a police booking mugshot released by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Atlanta, Aug. 23, 2023. Trump campaign attorney Kenneth Chesebro agreed to plead guilty Friday to a felony charge in the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump. Chesebro, like Powell, will be required to testify truthfully at the trials of other co-defendants in the case, including Trump, if he is asked to do so. Powell and Chesebro have both been identified as likely co-conspirators in a separate election interference case against Trump in Washington, D.C., federal court. Asked if Trump should be worried by the development in the case, Grubman said, "I don't think so."

Chesebro pleaded guilty in a Fulton County court to conspiracy to commit filing of false documents, one day after another former lawyer for Trump, Sidney Powell, also pleaded guilty in the case that had been scheduled to begin on Monday. The plea agreements mean that the first scheduled trial in the case, which was set to give Trump and other co-defendants a preview of the state’s case, will not happen. The Georgia case is one of four state or federal criminal cases that Trump is facing and one of two specifically focused on his attempts to overturn his election defeat. Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has pleaded not guilty and continues to falsely claim his loss was the result of fraud. Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell were among 19 co-defendants — including Trump — who were indicted in Georgia this year. But just before their criminal trials began, Powell and Chesebro flipped and struck plea deals with prosecutors. Powell, a longtime GOP lawyer who pushed nonsense conspiracy theories about the 2020 election while working for Trump, struck her deal on Thursday. As part of the deal, she was ordered to testify at future trials and write a letter apologizing to Georgia citizens. Worries are growing about how much the turmoil could cost the global economy. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, hit a three-week high this on Fridayfears that a military escalation could disrupt already tight supplies. In a speech largely focused on inflation, interest rates and economic growth, Jay Powell, the central bank’s chair, warned on Thursday that “geopolitical tensions are highly elevated and pose important risks to global economic activity.”The Middle East is becoming a wild card for the global economy. That would probably sap growth but might also slow the economy enough to negate the need for an additional interest-rate increase. The measures were announced days after the U.S. imposed tighter restrictions on sales of more advanced semiconductors to China.

Trump and his co-defendants are accused of a wide-ranging scheme to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. No trial date has been set for Trump, who has pleaded not guilty, as have all but one of his co-defendants. The Georgia case is one of four federal or state criminal prosecutions Trump faces as he campaigns to retake the White House in 2024. He is also currently on trial in a civil case in New York that could dismantle pillars of his business empire. Convictions in the first trial could ratchet up pressure on other defendants to strike plea deals and potentially cooperate with prosecutors.

Sidney K. Powell, a member of Donald J. Trump’s legal team after he lost the 2020 election, pleaded guilty on Thursday morning to six misdemeanor counts instead of facing a criminal trial that was to begin next week. She was among 19 defendants, including Mr. Trump, who were indicted in August for their efforts to subvert the election results in Georgia. Ms. Powell, 68, who appeared in a downtown Atlanta courtroom, was sentenced to six years of probation for conspiracy to commit intentional interference of election duties. Prosecutors said in court that Ms. Powell had given them a recorded statement on Wednesday as part of her plea deal. Ms. Powell has also agreed to turn over documents in her possession related to the case.

Unlike federal prosecutors – who kept their indictments carefully restricted to easily understood and more provable infractions, with few co-defendants – Willis went big. Under the agreement, Powell entered a guilty plea in six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to intentionally interfere with the election in Georgia, a state that President Joe Biden won narrowly. And it's bad for Trump," O'Brien says. Trump once considered appointing Powell as a special counsel investigating election fraud in late 2020, after he lost the election. Her guilty plea, entered in a Fulton County courthouse Thursday, means Powell is formally acknowledging her role in attempting to subvert the election Trump lost.
