Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s August indictment alleged that Trump and 18 other co-defendants participated in a “criminal enterprise” to subvert the 2020 presidential election.

Trump and his co-defendants are accused of a wide-ranging scheme to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. No trial date has been set for Trump, who has pleaded not guilty, as have all but one of his co-defendants. The Georgia case is one of four federal or state criminal prosecutions Trump faces as he campaigns to retake the White House in 2024. He is also currently on trial in a civil case in New York that could dismantle pillars of his business empire. Convictions in the first trial could ratchet up pressure on other defendants to strike plea deals and potentially cooperate with prosecutors.

Sidney K. Powell, a member of Donald J. Trump’s legal team after he lost the 2020 election, pleaded guilty on Thursday morning to six misdemeanor counts instead of facing a criminal trial that was to begin next week. She was among 19 defendants, including Mr. Trump, who were indicted in August for their efforts to subvert the election results in Georgia. Ms. Powell, 68, who appeared in a downtown Atlanta courtroom, was sentenced to six years of probation for conspiracy to commit intentional interference of election duties. Prosecutors said in court that Ms. Powell had given them a recorded statement on Wednesday as part of her plea deal. Ms. Powell has also agreed to turn over documents in her possession related to the case.

Unlike federal prosecutors – who kept their indictments carefully restricted to easily understood and more provable infractions, with few co-defendants – Willis went big. Under the agreement, Powell entered a guilty plea in six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to intentionally interfere with the election in Georgia, a state that President Joe Biden won narrowly. The first, bail bondsman Scott Hall, pleaded guilty in September to five misdemeanor conspiracy charges. Like Hall, Powell agreed to testify truthfully in upcoming trials involving other co-defendants in the case, including Trump.
