Lujan Grisham said in a news release Wednesday that more than 1,700 firearms were collected in gun buybacks over the past year because of the order. So there’s no way we could enforce that order.”Lujan Grisham issued the temporary order, originally a 30-day ban, in September 2023 after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in an Albuquerque park. In addition to restricting firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Bernalillo County, it strengthened oversight of firearm sales and implemented wastewater testing for fentanyl in public schools. State Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat, wrote in a letter last year that he opposed Lujan Grisham’s decision.

Police in Spain have seized 13 tons of banned chemicals, including “possible” chemical weapons precursors, that were bound for Russia despite the sanctions imposed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, they said on Tuesday. “During the investigation, it was proven that internationally sanctioned chemicals, some of them possible precursors for chemical weapons or nerve agents, had been exported in the past using this company structure,” national police and the tax authority said in a joint statement. The statement did not say which chemicals were seized in the latest operation. The Spanish company had established a sophisticated logistical and financial network to export internationally sanctioned chemical products to Russia, police said. However, Russia has repeatedly denied the accusations, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters in May that Moscow remained bound by its obligations under the treaty that bans chemical weapons.

A man was fatally shot and nine other people were wounded, including three children, after two groups fired at each other as crowds from a Tennessee State University homecoming parade were thinning out Saturday, Nashville police said. Two people died and more than two dozen were treated Thursday when a chemical leaked at a Houston-area industrial plant, officials said. A hydrogen sulfide leak was reported Thursday evening at a Pemex facility in the Houston suburb of Deer Park, the city said. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said workers were working on a flange when there was a leak of the chemical. A shelter-in-place order was issued shortly after 7 p.m. local time "out of precaution," and Deer Park asked nearby residents to stay inside and close doors and windows. The facility is co-located at a Shell refinery site, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which said it was aware of the incident.
