"Just imagine if RFK Jr. had been in office during Trump's first term," Bloomberg said at the Bloomberg American Health Summit in Washington D.C."Would Operation Warp Speed have even happened? RFK Jr. initially ran for president in 2024 as a Democrat, but switched to an independent bid and later dropped out to endorse Trump. Bloomberg in Tuesday's speech appealed directly to U.S. senators not to confirm RFK Jr. to the Cabinet role in the next Trump administration. Bloomberg expressed hope that Senate Republicans will convince Trump to reconsider nominating RFK Jr. before they are asked to weigh in. But RFK Jr. has taken a similar tack, endorsing a plan that he says is intended to "Make America Healthy Again" alongside Republicans.

The omission is potentially significant because Fox is the top TV outlet for Republicans, and Hegseth’s confirmation hinges on Republican senators. On Fox, Hegseth’s former colleagues aren’t raising alarms about the allegations or defending him – they’re just not talking about the issue at all. Instead, almost all of the recent mentions of Hegseth on Fox have been supportive or sympathetic. Hegseth told police the sex was consensual and he was never charged with a crime. A Fox News spokesperson declined to say whether the network has made an editorial decision not to report on allegations against its former host.

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a campaign rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, U.S., October 30, 2024. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team said Tuesday that it reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that sets the stage for the department to conduct background checks and start the security clearance process for Trump administration nominees and appointees. The Trump transition team said its memorandum of understanding with the DOJ "allows the transition team to submit names for background checks and security clearances." Democratic senators have been especially insistent that background checks are needed for all of Trump's nominees before they can be considered for confirmation by the Senate. "It's really appropriate, though, to have FBI background checks" to help illuminate the allegations against Hegseth, Fetterman said.

In today's edition, our reporters go through President Joe Biden's pardon of his son — and the part that's particularly rankling fellow Democrats. Some Democrats bristle at Biden's pardon justificationBy Carol E. Lee, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Gary Grumbach and Dareh GregorianIt’s not just that President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter. The pardon comes after Biden repeatedly said he would not use his executive authority to pardon his son or commute his son’s sentence. “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? : White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden’s decision to pardon his son, despite telling the press multiple times that the president had no such plans.

Two Democratic senators are urging the Biden administration to issue a policy directive that could temporarily limit President-elect Donald Trump's ability to deploy U.S. military troops domestically after he takes office. “We write to urge you to issue a policy directive that prohibits the mobilization of active duty military or federalizing National Guard personnel to be deployed against their fellow Americans unless specifically authorized,” they wrote. After he takes office on Jan. 20, Trump could issue his own policy directive that would reverse the directive issued by Biden. Warren and Blumenthal, whose offices said the letter speaks for itself, apparently hope that publicly highlighting the issue might deter Trump. It allows the president to deploy military troops in cases of insurrection, rebellion or extreme civil unrest.

Who is Kash Patel, Trump’s pick for FBI director?
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Jack Forrest | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Patel was also put in charge of the Pentagon transition effort for Trump’s first term, overseeing coordination with the incoming Biden-Harris administration.

CNN —Key Republican senators promised on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, will be vetted through the confirmation process. At the same time, two incoming committee chairs suggested openness to Patel and Trump’s other nominees not undergoing full FBI background checks as has traditionally been done. CNN has reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks. “No, I’ll let that be a decision that President Trump makes,” he said when asked if he will insist on background checks performed by the FBI. “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support.”It’s unclear how many Republican senators would be open to not having FBI background checks for nominees, and other key senators have already affirmed the importance of background checks.

Wray, the current F.B.I. director, who still has three years left on his 10-year term, with Mr. Patel has stunned Democrats and many in the national security establishment. For several years, we were the Republican and Democratic counsels who reviewed presidential nominees’ background checks for the Senate Judiciary Committee. We know how the confirmation process is supposed to work and how important F.B.I. That’s why we’re appalled by reports that the new Republican-led Senate and the incoming Trump administration may dispense with it. background checks and even Senate confirmation itself via mass recess appointments, made by the president when the Senate is not in session, never would have flown with past iterations of the Judiciary Committee, regardless of which party was in charge. In our time working on the Judiciary Committee, we reviewed hundreds of nominations.

CNN —Can the green shoots of clean energy break through the “brown blockade”? Those huge current and planned investments in new manufacturing plants may represent the sole opportunity to preserve any elements of Biden’s blueprint for growing the domestic clean energy industry. Republican districts are slated to receive an equally large share of another $435 billion in clean energy projects that have been announced but not yet built, the analysis found. The US reliance on the fossil fuels driving climate change has been declining for years, but only at a modest pace. Yet interrupting that transition by repealing the federal policies benefiting clean energy remains a dangerous gamble.

A key challenge for all of the Trump administration’s new public health leaders, the experts said, will be keeping politics out of science. CNN has reached out to Nesheiwat and Makary for comment and did not receive a response. Some said that could put them at odds with Kennedy, whom Trump has chosen for the nation’s top health post as HHS secretary. It doesn’t seem that he has much experience working in the field of public health,” said Castrucci, an epidemiologist who is president and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening the US public health system. SYDNEY, Australia — Australia’s government said Sunday that it had dropped plans to fine internet platforms up to 5% of their global revenue for failing to prevent the spread of misinformation online. The bill was part of a wide-ranging regulatory crackdown by Australia, where leaders have complained that foreign-domiciled tech platforms are overriding the country’s sovereignty, and comes ahead of a federal election due within a year. The Liberal-National coalition, as well as the Australian Greens and crossbench senators, all opposed the legislation, Sky News reported. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young called the government bill a “half-baked option” in remarks televised on Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Sunday. Industry body DIGI, of which Meta is a member, previously said the proposed regime reinforced an existing anti-misinformation code.
