U.S. Treasury yields were lower on Monday as investors weighed President-elect Donald Trump's Treasury secretary pick and eyed a key inflation reading due later in the week. Trump's choice of hedge fund executive Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary has calmed investors' nerves about the future of the U.S. economy. Bessent, the founder of Key Square Group, is expected to back the incoming president's economic goals including gradual tariffs and pro-business policies. However, as an old Wall Street hand and a fiscal conservative, investors believe Bessent will prioritize stability in the U.S. economy and markets. Also in focus this week are some key data points due ahead of a shortened trading week.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump on Monday promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China starting on the first day of his administration. What America importsThe United States’ top import from Canada is oil, which reached a record 4.3 million barrels per day in July, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The United States imports a significant amount of electronics from China, in addition to machinery, toys, games, sports equipment, furniture and plastics. The Trump tariffs also hit foreign steel, aluminum, washing machines and solar panels. He did just that when he was last in the White House, placing large tariffs on goods, primarily from China.

New York CNN —Business leaders say they are relieved President-elect Donald Trump made a safe choice to lead the Department of Treasury after more unconventional selections to other cabinet posts. Hedge fund executive Scott Bessent survived an internal squabble over the role of Treasury secretary, a key position that will face almost immediate deadlines and pressures. “Bessent is reasonable and pragmatic.”JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, one of the most powerful executives on Wall Street, is a fan, too. And for this key position, Trump opted to go with a pick that is not expected to draw a contentious confirmation battle. Trump instead picked Lutnick for Commerce secretary, another key role, though not as prominent as Treasury.

Dominic Gwinn | Afp | Getty ImagesFinancial markets on Monday welcomed President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. Treasury secretary, with currencies across the globe rallying on hopes that hedge fund manager Scott Bessent can take some of the sting out of Trump's more extreme economic views. "Trump's pick for Treasury Secretary has swelled investor sentiment further with stocks on Wall Street looking set for another flurry of gains," Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said in a research note. While many economists are skeptical about the effectiveness of tariffs, Bessent has defended them as "a useful tool for achieving the president's foreign policy objectives." Some strategists expect Trump's Treasury chief pick to be welcomed as good news for Asian currencies over the coming months.

When Donald J. Trump first ran for the White House in 2016, his closing campaign advertisement lamented the influence of Wall Street in Washington, flashing ominous images of big banks and the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros. Now, as president-elect, Mr. Trump has tapped two denizens of Wall Street to run his economic agenda. Mr. Trump’s choices to lead his economic team show the prominence of billionaire investors in setting an agenda that is supposed to fuel a “blue-collar boom” but that skeptics think will mostly benefit the rich. As Mr. Trump prepares to assume the presidency in January, business owners and investors are closely attuned to which of his economic promises he will ultimately follow through on. The selections of Mr. Bessent and Mr. Lutnick cement a hold by Wall Street executives over the two most important economic posts in any administration.

Scott Bessent, founder and chief executive officer of Key Square Group LP, during an interview in Washington, D.C., June 7, 2024. The U.S. stock market appeared to cheer President-elect Donald Trump's presumptive nominee for Treasury secretary, who told CNBC earlier in November that he sees an era of strong growth and lower inflation ahead. Stock market futures rose and Treasury yields tumbled early Monday following the announcement late Friday that Trump would pick Scott Bessent, a familiar Wall Street figure, to take on his administration's most important economic role. The move sent a message that Trump wants someone with strong market credentials as well as a similar philosophy for the role. In particular, bond yields have scaled higher, with some interpreting the move as anticipating another leg up for inflation while others see it as traders pricing in stronger growth.

AdvertisementTop economist Steve Hanke said that it's "nonsense" to think Trump's policies will spur inflation. Instead, inflation will depend on the Fed and the money supply, which has contracted since 2022. Advertisement"All this talk about Trump's policies are going to cause inflation to kick up again is just nonsense," the top economist said. "It depends on what the Fed is doing and what the monetary policy picture looks like with the money supply." Bessent has suggested ways to spread out any inflationary impact from Trump's trade policies.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday reviewed investors' reaction to President-elect Donald Trump's latest cabinet pick, hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. His takeaway is that Wall Street believes the potential Treasury secretary will be a prudent force in the administration. "What matters is that this Treasury secretary designate is a serious person, not unlike Steven Mnuchin before him," he said "And those who believed Trump couldn't get a dollop of rigor in the cabinet — well, they've been proven wrong." Cramer also pointed out that Treasury yields fell, with the 10-year sliding to about 4.28% when investors were worried about it hitting 4.5% a few days ago. "That's where Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary designate, comes from, so the fence sitters and skeptics are jumping on the Trump bandwagon as if the president elect said, 'higher stock prices and lower taxes for all.'"

In today's big story, Trump's trade plans could spell trouble for prices, and preparing for it isn't so easy . Sector experts told BI the massive chipmaker will continue to make its most advanced tech in Taiwan .

Dollar slips with bond yields on Treasury nomination

The dollar relinquished a little of its recent gains on Monday as the pick for U.S. Treasury secretary seemed to reassure the bond market and pulled yields lower, shaving some of the currency's rate advantage. Yields on 10-year Treasuries slipped to 4.351%, from 4.412% late Friday, as President-elect Donald Trump's choice of fund manager Scott Bessent was welcomed by the bond market as an old Wall Street hand and a fiscal conservative. However, Bessent has also been openly in favour of a strong dollar and has supported tariffs, suggesting any pullback in the currency might be fleeting. The index was last down 0.5% at 106.950, having hit a two-year peak of 108.090 on Friday. The dollar dipped 0.4% on the Japanese yen to 154.11, and further away from its recent peak of 156.76.

[END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s final flurry of cabinet picks and other appointments rounded out what his aides described as a unified, loyal, MAGA-driven administration. There is a revenge team, led by prospective nominees with instructions to rip apart the Justice Department, the intelligence agencies and the Defense Department, hunting down the so-called deep state and anyone who participated in the prosecutions of Mr. Trump. There is a calm-the-markets team, which Mr. Trump hopes will be led by Scott Bessent, the Wall Street billionaire who Mr. Trump chose for Treasury secretary. And then there is a government shrinkage team, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, whose goals are wildly ambitious, to put it mildly. As President-elect Donald Trump takes an unconventional approach to stocking his cabinet, he’s also embracing one candidate pool that has plenty of precedent: Wall Street chief executives. On Friday, Trump picked Scott Bessent, a top economic adviser and the founder of Key Square Group, a hedge fund, to be his Treasury secretary. He previously tapped Howard Lutnick, the chief executive of the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, for commerce secretary. Executives appointed to government positions are often required to make extensive stock divestitures, so the path from Wall Street to Washington can be particularly complex (while also offering an opportunity to avoid certain taxes). Bessent’s potential departure from Key Square may trigger “key man provisions” that often protect clients of hedge funds if top executives leave.

Musk recently said his choice for the influential Treasury secretary role would be Howard Lutnick. As President-elect Donald Trump assembles the key players to drive his new administration's agenda, Elon Musk is rarely far away. Trump tapped hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, the founder and chief executive of Key Square Group, to be his next Treasury secretary on Friday. Bessent, a Wall Street veteran and a top economic advisor to Trump, emerged as a favorite of the president-elect while on the campaign trail this year. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump sought advice from Wall Street leaders for the Treasury spot, and his advisors told him that analysts would view Bessent as a stabilizing figure.

President-elect Donald Trump on Friday asked Scott Bessent, a top fundraiser to his campaign, to serve as secretary of the Treasury Department, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News. And with Trump proposing aggressive tariffs on imports from countries spanning the globe, the new Treasury Department chief will have to manage relationships with global finance ministers who may choose to retaliate with tariffs of their own. With inflation moderating over the past year, the Powell-led Fed has cut interest rates as part of a bid to stop high borrowing costs from unduly raising unemployment. In Trump’s first term, he tapped banker Steven Mnuchin to lead the Treasury Department. But his tenure at the Treasury Department was more stable than those of other high-level Cabinet posts in Trump’s first term.
