There was a time, Rosalynn Carter once confessed, when she dreaded going back to Plains, her tiny Georgia hometown. She was enjoying her life as a young sailor’s wife, relishing the freedom and sense of adventure that came from being so far from home. “I had been self-sufficient and independent from my mother and Jimmy’s mother,” Mrs. Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 96, recalled several years ago in an interview. “And I knew that if I went home, I was going to have to come back to them.”The anger faded. Eventually, she said, no matter where she was in the world, she was always eager to get home to Plains.

We need this election to once and for all defeat MAGA and Trumpism, and send Donald Trump packing, if he is not in prison. Nicholas BuxtonNew YorkTo the Editor:Carlos Lozada writes: “Joe Biden versus Donald Trump is not the choice America wants. I would rather risk losing to a Nikki Haley than take the chance on beating Mr. Trump. Millions of people are yearning for an alternative to an octogenarian Joe Biden and to an existentially dangerous to our democracy Donald Trump. In a recent poll, a “generic” Democrat matched against Mr. Trump outperformed Joe Biden by more than 10 points.

Following the pandemic, the state of mental health in America saw such a great decline that the U.S. Yet, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on Sunday at her home in Plains, Georgia at the age of 96, advocated for mental health long before 2020. Early on, Carter recognized the disconnect between individuals with mental health conditions and people without them. She made sure to hold her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who is now 99 years old, to the same standard. "Twenty-five years ago, we did not dream that people might someday be able actually to recover from mental illnesses," Rosalynn Carter said at a mental health symposium back in 2003.

Rosalynn Carter, who died on Sunday at age 96, was rarely included on any list of best-dressed first ladies. She was not generally called “stylish” or “trendsetting.” She did not play the White House dress-up game, at least as designed by predecessors such as Dolley Madison and Jackie Kennedy. But that does not mean Mrs. Carter did not fully understand the power and political use of clothes, or how to strategically deploy them during her time in Washington. Starting with Mrs. Carter’s declaration, after Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, that the one item she would be taking with her to the White House from Georgia was her sewing machine. And it set the tone for what came next — which was the greatest dressing scandal of the administration.

Known as the Steel Magnolia, a nickname she liked, Mrs. Carter sparked controversy when she sat in (silently) on cabinet meetings. In 1980, Mrs. Carter thought her husband was “seemingly pompous” in explaining why he wouldn’t make politically expedient decisions. When Mr. Carter rejected that idea out of hand, she helped him reinvent the post-presidency by establishing the Carter Center. When I was at work on my biography, Mrs. Carter shared with me her husband’s letters from sea. Rosalynn Carter kept those letters in a drawer close by until the day she died.

Some two decades after leaving the White House, Rosalynn Carter reflected on the criticism she generated for expanding the role of a first lady. “You can’t let it stop you,” she told an interviewer. “The first lady role has changed,” she observed. “I don’t think there will ever be another first lady who will be just a hostess and pour tea.”If that is true, Mrs. Carter will have been one of the primary reasons. “It was a time in the country of profound change for women, and she wanted to seize the opportunities before her.”

I was soon able to anticipate questions and to answer them, falteringly at times, but I learned. To us he was the same participant in our nightly dinner table discussions that he had always been. I soon discovered that it was easier for me to learn about people’s needs as I traveled than it was for him. Once the press and our persistent opponents heard about my attendance at the (Cabinet) meetings, very soon it was rumored that I was ‘telling’ Jimmy what to do! If only we could consider mental illnesses as straightforwardly as we do physical illnesses, those affected could seek help and be treated in an open and effective way.”

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter is seen outside her home after U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden met with former President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Carter in Plains, Georgia, U.S., April 29, 2021. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were the longest-married presidential couple, having wed in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18. "The best thing I ever did was marry Rosalynn," Carter told the C-SPAN cable TV channel in 2015. During that time, Rosalynn Carter sought to support her husband by speaking in 112 cities in 34 states during a 44-day tour. In the White House, she became honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health, key to passage of a 1980 act that helped fund local mental health centers.

Not long after Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady, died on Sunday, politicians from both sides of the aisle commended her work in that public role and the strides she made for women’s rights, mental health and many other causes. The Carter Center in Atlanta announced her death, calling her “a passionate champion of mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights.” The center disclosed in May that Mrs. Carter had dementia and on Friday that she had entered hospice care at home. Like many first ladies, Mrs. Carter used her prominent position to champion a cause: the treatment of mental illness. She was named honorary chairwoman of the Carter administration’s mental health commission, and she led the White House Conference on Aging, which started in 1977. She held nationwide hearings on both topics, testified before Congress and pressed for legislation to support mental health centers and to offer insurance coverage for the care of mental illness.

ATLANTA (AP) — Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Jimmy Carter during his one term as U.S. president and their four decades thereafter as global humanitarians, has died at the age of 96. Fiercely loyal and compassionate as well as politically astute, Rosalynn Carter prided herself on being an activist first lady, and no one doubted her behind-the-scenes influence. After Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election, Rosalynn Carter seemed more visibly devastated than her husband. “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business,” Rosalynn Carter recalled with pride in a 2021 interview with The Associated Press. “I was in all the states,” Rosalynn Carter told the AP. At The Carter Center, she launched a fellowship for journalists to pursue better coverage of mental health issues. Years later, Rosalynn and Jimmy would quietly support integration — and call for it more vocally at Plains Baptist Church. Ruth Carter later engineered a date between her brother and Rosalynn during one of his trips home from the U.S. But the void would not begin to close until the former president conceived The Carter Center.
