Space industry experts told Business Insider that Musk's influence over Trump could help advance his business interests, including sending the first crewed mission to Mars. "I'm hugely optimistic about what's going to happen in space now," Michelle Hanlon, executive director of the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, told Business Insider. Hanlon's optimism isn't unfounded, especially if Trump's second term focuses on space as much as his first. AdvertisementDuring his first term, from 2017 to 2021, Trump's administration founded the Space Force, re-launched the National Space Council, and established NASA's Artemis program. A spokesperson for Trump's campaign said that Musk's ideas and efficiency will benefit federal bureaucracy but his role in Trump's administration remains under wraps.

The Chinese military has increased its provocative flights around Taiwan by 300% over the last five months, according to the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in the Indo-Pacific Command. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Gen. Kevin Schneider warned that People’s Liberation Air Force activities have increased dramatically since Taiwan’s new president was inaugurated in May. Schneider noted that the Chinese Air Force has maintained the increased activity level since Lai Ching-te was sworn in on May 20. Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that he intends to unify Taiwan with mainland China and has steadily ramped up military pressure on democratically governed Taiwan. Trump has not committed to defending Taiwan during a Chinese military invasion.

In September, Truth Social had 698,000 monthly active users in the United States, compared with 70.4 million for X, according to Similarweb, a data tracking site. Some shareholders — many of them individual investors and supporters of Mr. Trump — took to a Truth Social message board on Wednesday to blast Wall Street traders, accusing it of conspiring to keep a lid on the stock price. Before the trading day began, it appeared Trump Media shares were poised to rocket higher. The stock was the most heavily traded in the hours before the official market open and rose as much as 30 percent in early trading. Swings in Trump Media’s price set off brief trading halts by stock exchanges on Wednesday morning, as they have on other occasions.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

Ukraine's drone units are operating more like scrappy startups than traditional military units. AdvertisementSome of Ukraine's drone units are operating more like edgy tech start-ups than military units, as they continue to play an oversized role in the country's military defenses. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, drone pilots are now the deadliest soldiers on the modern battlefield. The Journal met with Clear Eyes, a drone battalion that started out as unpaid civilian enthusiasts relying on commercial drones to track Russian military movements. Dakhno is now a drone pilot who claims to have killed about 300 Russian soldiers in a year and a half, and to have once flown a drone with a 9-pound bomb into a school auditorium where Russian soldiers were sheltering.

Sirens sounded in central and northern Israel Saturday and the Israeli military continued to pummel Lebanon and Gaza, as cease-fire talks held this week yielded little hope of ending hostilities on the ground. The Israeli military bombed targets in Beirut's densely-populated southern suburbs overnight after warning residents to evacuate. It was the first time in several days that the area, a Hezbollah stronghold, had been hit. The Lebanese Health Ministry said 52 people were killed by the Israeli strikes, and 72 injured across the country on Friday. Health workers in Gaza told Reuters that at least 68 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the last 24 hours.

How Missile Defense Works (and Why It Fails)

How Missile Defense Works (and Why It Fails) Iran fired two of the largest barrages of ballistic missiles ever at Israel this year. Neither attack caused major damage, but some Israeli and American officials said it may have been a Here’s why stopping a ballistic missile attack is hard. A defensive missile called an interceptor must be fired soon after that to reach the incoming missile in time. Israel’s best-known defense system, the Iron Dome, was built to stop short-range rockets, and is too slow and limited when it comes to ballistic missiles. AdvertisementOne of the US Navy's best ballistic missile interceptors, the Standard Missile-3, got a workout in the Middle East this year, eliminating Iranian missiles headed for Israel. That's a high cost per intercept, especially if more than one interceptor is fired for each target. An SM-3 Block 1B interceptor missile is launched from the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie during a test in the Pacific. It was then fired a second time during Iran's massive early October barrage, during which Tehran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. The industry process, coupled with the exquisite capability of the missile to intercept ballistic missiles, raises the cost of the interceptor.

America PAC has been tasked with much of the pro-Trump canvassing operation as his campaign focuses its efforts on a more limited effort targeting so-called low-propensity voters. “I know it’s been flagged for America PAC that this has been transpiring,” an operative formerly on the effort said. As some of that data spilled into public view last month, an operative close to the effort said: “All hell has broken loose” inside the PAC. Through late October, America PAC had spent upward of $54 million on Blitz’s services, according to Federal Election Commission filings — more than the PAC has on the three other vendors combined. America PAC ended its relationships this summer with two other prominent GOP-aligned canvassing firms that were knocking on doors as part of its effort.

The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months, conducting a variety of experiments and maintaining the structure. China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of U.S. concerns over the overall control over the space program by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm. China’s moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. and others, including Japan and India. Besides putting a space station into orbit, the Chinese space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. China’s space authorities say they have measures in place in case their astronauts have to return to Earth earlier.

It is clear what Russia stands to gain from an influx of some 10,000 North Korean troops to aid its war in Ukraine. North Korean troops are expected to help with that. North Korea, for its part, needs a partner that will shield it from the United Nations Security Council as it pursues its nuclear ambitions. “North Korea is trying to get as many benefits as it can from this relationship,” said Edward Howell, an expert on North Korea at the Chatham House think tank. “If thousands of North Korean troops learn how to survive on a battlefield full of drones,” Gabuev said, “that is a lesser problem than North Korea having quieter nuclear-capable submarines.

The focus on advanced technologies has put the two countries into a different kind of arms race. The US Air Force secretary suggested that AI could be decisive in future warfare. On Tuesday, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said China has been effectively modernizing the People's Liberation Army, fielding systems with the intent of challenging US forces, especially its high-value combat assets like carriers and satellites. China has built up its Rocket Force, developing capabilities that put US military assets at military bases and airfields across the Indo-Pacific within striking range. The Air Force secretary said that he doesn't think people who say that AI is "going to determine who's the winner in the next battlefield" are "all that far off."
