CNN —More than 1,200 days after their historic 2020 general election clash, Joe Biden and Donald Trump are expected to clinch their respective parties’ 2024 nominations Tuesday, with voting taking place in four additional states. Biden is the projected winner of the Democratic primary in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, held earlier Tuesday. Unlike Trump, the president never faced a serious, well-funded primary challenge, with Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, his lone rival in elected office, dropping out and endorsing Biden last week. Biden won the state by less than 12,000 votes in 2020 – the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia since Bill Clinton in 1992. “But we all know Donald Trump sees a different America, an American story of resentment, revenge and retribution.

That pushed Biden's count past 1,968 for a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August, where his nomination will be made official. Former President Donald Trump is expected to clinch the Republican nomination shortly. Biden, who mounted his first bid for president 37 years ago, did not face any serious Democratic challengers to his run for reelection at age 81. Already the oldest-ever American president, Biden would be 86 if he served out the entirety of a second term. “I sure feel confident.”Biden first ran for the Democratic nomination ahead of the 1988 presidential election, but flamed out when it emerged he had plagiarized speeches.

"There has been a lot of attention paid to language in the report about the president’s memory," Hur said, addressing one of the most contentious parts of his report. For that reason, I had to consider the President’s memory and overall mental state, and how a jury likely would perceive his memory and mental state in a criminal trial." Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat, chided Hur for including the references to Biden's memory at all. The issue of both Biden's and Trump's mental acuity has been an ongoing issue in the 2024 campaign, although polling shows that voters have greater concerns about Biden's age. "What does that say about his mental state?"

CNN —A new glimpse inside Donald Trump’s inner circle shows how the ex-president’s men and women often confront a fateful dilemma under huge personal pressure. Butler’s comments are important because they foretell how he might testify in the federal classified documents trial that could be hugely damaging to Trump but that is increasingly unlikely to happen before Americans vote in the fall. Why ‘Trump Employee 5’ broke his silenceIt is too early to say whether Butler’s testimony would be decisive in the federal trial in the classified documents case. Walt Nauta, a Trump personal aide, and De Oliveira, who have not broken with the ex-president, have also denied wrongdoing. After a yearlong investigation, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled classified material and improperly disclosed classified information as a private citizen. Here are four key things to look for in Tuesday’s high-stakes hearing:What will Hur say about Biden’s age and memory? (At 81, Biden is the oldest US president in history, though Donald Trump is only a few years younger at 77.) House Republicans are looking for Hur’s public testimony to provide fresh momentum to their sputtering impeachment inquiry into Biden. Hur’s approach will determine how easy, or hard, it is for lawmakers to extract the political moments that they want.

An intense weekend of campaigning, with the rivals both visiting the critical swing state of Georgia, laid out the stakes of their clash – as well as their strategies and vulnerabilities. Still, a successful State of the Union address can clarify a president’s purpose not just to voters – but to himself and his own campaign. Backstage in Georgia, Trump met the parents of Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student who was allegedly killed by an undocumented migrant. Biden’s campaign knows it must do more to defuse concerns about his capacity to fully serve a second term. “Here’s a guy who’s kicking off his general election campaign up the road with Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Advertisement"Now some other people my age see differently, the American story of revenge, resentment, and retribution," Biden said. "My fellow Americans, the issue facing our nation isn't how old we are: It's about how old our ideas are," he said. Polling shows that even in this hyper-partisan era, Americans broadly agree in their concerns about Biden's age. Democrats also bristle about the extent of concerns about Biden's age compared to former President Donald Trump, the man Biden surpassed to become the oldest president.

Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Representative Dean Phillips speaks to the media as he arrives at Londonderry High School during U.S. presidential primary election, in Londonderry, New Hampshire, U.S., January 23, 2024. Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, Minn., has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed President Joe Biden. "And it is clear that Joe Biden is OUR candidate and OUR opportunity to demonstrate what type of country America is and intends to be." Biden's campaign has been in general election mode for weeks, kicking into high gear after the president swept New Hampshire and South Carolina. Though Biden's age was not enough to singlehandedly keep Phillips' campaign afloat, it is still a top vulnerability as the general election nears.

Washington, DC CNN —First lady Dr. Jill Biden isn’t holding back as her role in her husband’s reelection campaign comes into sharper focus. The first lady is juggling her campaign work with her official role and her full-time teaching job at Northern Virginia Community College. She’s going to go to a variety of areas in this country,” a source familiar with the planning said. Biden campaign advisers believe the first lady’s appeal has far reach – particularly with women and grassroots supporters and in moderate parts of the country. “Here’s the thing about men like Donald Trump - they underestimate our power because they don’t understand it,” she said in Atlanta.

Read previewAt a recent closed-door fundraiser, President Joe Biden had to rely on note cards prepped by his staff to provide donors with detailed answers on his policy. But since the advent of mass communication technology and, as a result, an increasing expectation of US leaders to make public addresses, presidents have long relied on note cards and teleprompters to face their constituents. Even US presidents who had the public reputation of being robust and nimble needed note cards, Kastor said. John F. Kennedy, who was able to keep his medical problems, including persistent back pain, hidden from the public, used note cards. Former President Donald Trump, who is now 77, has received flack for relying on note cards albeit for different reasons.

New York CNN —The White House is formally calling on Fox News to walk back its coverage of bribery and corruption allegations against President Joe Biden. The letter is the latest from the Biden White House, which has taken a more aggressive approach to news coverage of the president that it sees as unfair in the run-up to the November election. Earlier this month, Sams sent a letter to the White House Correspondents’ Association, protesting coverage of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified material. Since Fox News has declined to take the responsible course of action and meaningfully correct the record, the White House is now moving to formally request the network do so. And, in a statement the network provided to CNN, Fox News didn’t directly address the White House’s request.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden is fit for duty, his doctor reported Wednesday following the president’s annual physical, in what is expected to be the last update on Biden’s health before November’s election. Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a memo there are “no new concerns” with the president’s health revealed by this year’s physical. The White House said earlier Wednesday that no cognitive test was administered as O’Connor did not find it necessary. The procedure was “successfully completed” at the White House by a team from Walter Reed, O’Connor said. Reports from the White House physician over the last several decades have consistently described the office-holder as fit to serve.

Read previewThe White House physician said President Joe Biden is "a healthy, active, robust 81-year-old male" following Biden's annual exam. "He continues to be fit for duty and fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations," Kevin O'Connor, the president's physician, wrote in a summary released by the White House. Biden spent most of the afternoon at Walter Reed Medical Center completing his third annual physical since his election. The White House and Biden's lawyers have vigorously disputed Hur's conclusion about the president's memory, arguing that the special counsel crossed the line in putting such conjecture into his lengthy report. While some tried to argue that Trump forgot the name of former first lady Melania Trump, the context suggests he was instead shouting out a former Trump White House official.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland speaks during a meeting of the Reproductive Rights Task Force at the Justice Department in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 4, 2023. House Republicans on Tuesday subpoenaed Attorney General Merrick Garland for records related to a special counsel's investigation of how President Joe Biden handled classified documents. The chairmen of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees demanded that Garland give them transcripts, notes, video and audio files from special counsel Robert Hur's probe. The chairmen linked the request directly to their ongoing presidential impeachment inquiry, which centers on allegations that Biden and his family engaged in corrupt business practices. Biden later that same day is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress.

When one thinks of Joe Biden, one's first thought probably isn't the phrase "good sex." But that's apparently what keeps the Bidens' marriage going strong. AdvertisementI'm guessing most people didn't think there was much they needed — or wanted — to know about President Joe Biden's sex life, but here we are. Joe and Jill Biden married on June 17, 1977, after Biden proposed to her five times. While the Bidens' sex life might not move the needle for most voters, some Republican figures — like Donald Trump Jr. — certainly are interested in how much "wood" Biden is packing.

After President Joe Biden announced his reelection bid last April, the vast majority of Democratic leaders coalesced around his candidacy, which wasn't surprising for an incumbent. CNN —Over the past year, we’ve seen an alarming wave of current or former senior government officials who reportedly failed to properly safeguard classified information. The clearest threat is that our adversaries can more easily gain access to classified material and the sensitive information it contains. This increases the likelihood that an adversary would succeed in accessing any classified documents stored at these locations. Our adversaries are not the only ones observing how well we safeguard sensitive information. If Biden drops from the presidential race, it would likely lead to a contested convention in August. AdvertisementFor years, Democratic President Joe Biden has been plagued with critiques about his old age and perceived cognitive skills. With no candidate having amassed a majority of the nation's delegates, the Democratic presidential nominee was decided at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where anti-war protesters angrily demonstrated outside. AdvertisementMost of the state delegates at the convention voted for Humphrey, leading him to win the Democratic Party's nomination. Unless Biden stuns the party and suddenly drops out, the current 81-year-old president is on a fast track to obtaining the Democratic presidential nomination.

CNN —President Joe Biden personally directed his senior campaign aides in recent days to focus more aggressively on former President Donald Trump’s inflammatory comments, according to two sources familiar with the president’s edict. For weeks, his campaign has said they are fully prepared for Trump to emerge as the GOP nominee. “Freedom and democracy itself are on the ballot in November.”That marked only the second time, according to a campaign official, that a Biden campaign statement was attributed directly to the president. He said the idea of usurping the nomination from Biden and then winning is "certifiably insane." AdvertisementThe chairman of the Democratic National Committee said the idea of replacing President Joe Biden as the party's candidate and winning the election in November is "certifiably crazy actually." Nevertheless, Super Tuesday, where roughly a third of the nation's Democratic delegates will be doled out, is fast approaching. That hasn't happened, though, since Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson said he wouldn't run for reelection in 1968 after winning the New Hampshire primary in late March of that year. The 1968 contested convention was chaotic — even dangerous at times — and the Democratic candidate chosen, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, lost in November by 110 electoral votes.
