Leon Neal | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON - Outgoing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday said he will step down as the leader of the Conservative Party after the opposition Labour Party secured a landslide victory in Thursday's nationwide election. Sunak announced he will step down as the leader of the Conservative Party as soon as the formal arrangements for selecting his successor are in place. The Conservative Party suffered its lowest result, in terms of seats, in its post-war history. Keir Starmer's Labour Party won its second-largest majority after former Prime Minister Tony Blair's 179-seat majority in 1997.

Health care and social assistance added 82,400 jobs, while government increased by 70,000 positions. The breakdown of the June jobs report suggests that growth has become increasingly uneven as the labor market shows signs of softening. Health care and social assistance have been a key component of the labor market recovery since the pandemic. Meanwhile, education accounted for 17,200 of the jobs added in the government sector. Both state and local governments added jobs outside of education, as well.

Novo Nordisk investors appeared unperturbed Thursday by a critical Harvard report that linked weight loss drugs to a rare eye condition. Semaglutide, which is present in weight loss drugs including Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy, might be associated with an increased risk of a rare eye disease, according to a study carried out by Harvard Medical School. Patients were more likely to be diagnosed with the eye condition compared to patients who were not prescribed the weight loss drugs, the study found. A spokesperson from Novo Nordisk said the optic nerve disease NAION is not an "adverse drug reaction for the marketed formulations of semaglutide" as per the approved labels. "Patient safety is a top priority for Novo Nordisk, and we take all reports about adverse events from use of our medicines very seriously," the spokesperson said.

US indexes ended the day lower, despite market excitement over the latest PCE data. The stock market closed 2024's first half strongly, with the S&P 500 up nearly 15%. "The soft inflation data will build the case that the Fed can start cutting rates in the coming months," LPL Financial chief economist Jeffrey Roach said. Currently, futures markets are pricing in the odds of twoThe soft inflation reading was not enough to keep the indexes in the green through Friday, but the stock market still strongly closed out the first half of 2024. Could these be harbingers of weakness to come, or will they take over as market leaders in the second half?"

A data center. The industry is about to be hit with a "wave of data tsunami," said Merima Dzanic, head of strategy and operations at the Danish Data Center Industry Association. A "whole different approach to how we build, design and operate data centers," is required, Dzanic added. Eco launchASCEND's goal was to explore the potential and comparative environmental impact of space-based data centers to aid Europe in becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. Yet Dzanic warned the somewhat "fringe" idea of space-based data centers doesn't fully solve the issue of sustainable energy usage.

The nocturnal critter was most likely a German cockroach, and its ancestors were pestering people more than 2,000 years ago in southern Asia, a new study found. German cockroaches, scientifically known as Blattella germanica, are ubiquitous in cities in the United States and around the world. The research team received 281 German cockroach samples from 57 sites in 17 countries and studied their DNA to trace their evolution. And we know that transatlantic trade routes probably were the culprit for the spread of German cockroaches. “For example, the German cockroach has insecticide resistance that is not detected in many other pests,” he said.

Mario Anzuoni | ReutersOff-price retailers like TJX Companies and Ross are still posting sales gains and taking market share from rivals, but it's not just because consumers are under pressure and hunting for value. TJX and Ross both reported fiscal first quarter earnings last week that came in better than Wall Street expected, even as both companies lapped outsize growth from the prior-year period. Ross, which runs Ross Dress for Less and dd's Discounts, posted an 8% jump in sales, bringing revenue to $4.86 billion, compared to estimates of $4.83 billion, according to LSEG. "That's because they're providing consistent value to the consumer – and that's branded consistent value to the consumer at a discount price," said Roach. The dynamic is a bit different at Ross, which has more exposure to the lower- and middle-income consumer than TJX does and competes more on price, said Siegel.

Consumer sentiment slumped as inflation expectations rose, despite otherwise strong signals in the economy, according to a closely watched survey released Friday. The University of Michigan Survey of Consumers sentiment index for May posted an initial reading of 67.4 for the month, down from 77.2 in April and well off the Dow Jones consensus call for 76. Along with the downbeat sentiment measure, the outlook for inflation across the one- and five-year horizons increased. The inflation readings represent the biggest pitfall for policymakers as the Federal Reserve contemplates the near-term path of monetary policy. The next important data point for inflation comes Wednesday when the Labor Department releases its consumer price index report for April.

The U.K. economy has emerged from recession as gross domestic product rose 0.6% in the first quarter, official figures showed Friday, beating expectations. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast growth of 0.4% on the previous three months of the year. The U.K. entered a shallow recession in the second half of 2023, as persistent inflation continued to hurt the economy. Although there is no official definition of a recession, two straight quarters of negative growth is widely considered a technical recession. The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee on Thursday warned that indicators of persistent inflation "remain elevated," and voted to keep its main interest rate at 5.25%.
