Opinion | Biden Must Know How This Should End
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Mike Murphy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The horrible assassination attempt on Donald Trump has underscored Joe Biden’s dire political situation. Americans hope the awful events in Butler, Pa., will inspire the reversal of our ever-coarsening political culture, as Mr. Biden called for on Sunday night. Nonetheless, politics will march forward — and have no doubt, Mr. Biden is losing this race. The total war between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden has now raged for eight years and exhausted our nation. Joe Biden cannot offer that.

How Will Vance Affect the Race? Look at 2028, Not 2024.
  + stars: | 2024-07-16 | by ( Nate Cohn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The campaign was jolted by President Biden’s debate performance, which led many Democrats to call on him to leave the race. Of all these events, the selection of Mr. Vance seems by far the least significant — at least for this campaign. Historically, vice-presidential selections play only a minor role in the course of presidential elections, and Mr. Vance is probably less likely than most to change the direction of the race. His basic political identity — a white, male, populist Trump loyalist — reinforces the core message of the Trump ticket. Mr. Vance will not bestow a small home state “bonus” in a swing state, either, as Mr. Vance’s home state, Ohio, is not competitive.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. A list of Black Republican and female Republican lawmakers gave speeches, offering a somewhat misleading perception that the GOP has a deep and diverse bench. One GOP source said speechwriters at the convention had thrown out all their pre-written material for the week’s top speakers and started again. The ex-president has a new chance at politics and life in the wake of his assassination attempt.

To the Editor:Re “Judge Voids Case About Documents That Trump Held” (front page, July 16):It is rare that I read a news article that I describe as breathtaking, but Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of Donald Trump’s classified documents case falls into this rare category. I may have been naïve in my belief that in the U.S. justice system, judges were in place to decide cases based on evidence and arguments before the court. The ruling highlights that individual judges are no longer arbiters but rather extensions of political parties. Steve ReichShort Hills, N.J.To the Editor:The timing of Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of the classified documents case — right before the Republican convention — is so cynical and political. She must have been writing her 93-page opinion for a while, but she released it with impeccable timing to give Donald Trump a victory going into the opening of the convention.

Rupert Murdoch Shows Up at Republican Convention

Ron DeSantis, bestowing Mr. DeSantis with the brute-force promotional heft that only he could deliver. But on Tuesday, Mr. Murdoch, the recently retired global media titan, was in Milwaukee to take his place among the rank-and-file Republican faithful. And with that, he became one of the most prominent one-time Trump detractors to line up behind the former president and join a convention that has doubled as a resounding show of Republican unity. Mr. Murdoch, 93, has not been a regular at conventions. But his appearance is also another extraordinary turn in his contorted relationship with Mr. Trump, whose unshakable hold over the audience of Mr. Murdoch’s major cable network, Fox News, has kept Mr. Murdoch yoked to the former president for the better part of the past decade.

Who is Usha Vance, the wife of Trump’s running mate?
  + stars: | 2024-07-15 | by ( Arit John | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
His wife, Usha, has been by his side through it all. As the Ohio delegation chanted her husband’s name on the Republican convention floor in Milwaukee, Usha Vance stood beside the first-term senator and applauded as he was nominated by voice vote to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Now, with JD Vance as Trump’s vice presidential nominee, the couple has embarked on a journey even bigger than the 2022 Senate campaign in Ohio. If his 2022 Senate campaign is any indication, Usha Vance may play an understated but key role in helping introduce him to the public. In his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” JD Vance described her as his “Yale spirit guide,” helping him navigate life at the elite university where they met.

Mr. Holt’s coverage ran on MSNBC immediately after the shooting on Saturday and he was scheduled to interview Mr. Biden on Monday. The person said staff members were surprised on Monday when MSNBC ran programming from its digital news service, NBC News Now, instead of the main NBC News show, “Today,” which was not pre-empted. A spokesman for MSNBC denied that NBC had made the programming change because of political considerations. In a statement, the network said: “Given the gravity and complexity of this unfolding story, NBC News, NBC News NOW and MSNBC have remained in rolling breaking news coverage since Saturday evening. MSNBC made other programming changes after the shooting on Saturday.

As the Republican convention opens on Monday, Democrats find themselves in a state of suspended animation and dread that the election could be tilting further away from President Biden. While there have been no new public calls from congressional Democrats for Mr. Biden to drop out since the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday, many in the party maintain grave concerns about the president’s ability to win. The last three weeks have been a cascade of fast-moving and damaging events for Mr. Biden. The shooting on Saturday complicated what Mr. Biden’s campaign believes is one of its most potent campaign messages: that Mr. Trump poses an immediate and active threat to American democracy. Mr. Trump’s in-the-moment response — the raised fist and bloodied face that instantly became a defining image — sent Democrats into yet another tailspin.

There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence ever, period. “I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering,” Mr. Biden said. And the White House said that Mr. Biden would keep his campaign events in Las Vegas. Mr. Biden will speak at an NAACP conference on Tuesday and a UnidosUS conference on Wednesday, even as Mr. Trump and his party hold the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In both sets of remarks on Sunday, Mr. Biden made a plea that — if recent history is any guide — seemed unlikely to be heeded by activists on either side of the nation’s increasingly bitter divide.

Trump called Vance 20 minutes before he announced he’d chosen the Ohio senator on Truth Social, a source familiar with the process told CNN. The two had met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday, before the rally at which Trump was shot in the ear. Trump is betting that Vance articulating his evolution from Trump critic to supporter will prove much more potent than those older comments. “President Trump honored the Constitution. “I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said.

Private efforts to nudge Biden to step aside continue

Milwaukee CNN —The public calls from Democrats asking President Joe Biden to bow out of the presidential race have quieted in recent days, but private efforts to nudge the president and his top aides continue, several Democratic sources told CNN. “Lose everything,” is how one Democrat described a polling memo Greenberg sent to Biden’s inner circle in recent days. “Devastating,” was the one word answer of a second Democrat close to the White House who is familiar with the Greenberg memos. Greenberg has been a leading Democratic pollster for decades and his work includes advising Bill Clinton’s two winning presidential campaigns. In his NBC News interview Monday, for example, the president again made clear he has no intention of stepping aside.

Mr. Trump was rushed off the stage, blood visible around his right ear. The Secret Service said its personnel had killed the shooter. Secret Service agents then rushed Mr. Trump off the stage. Mr. Trump had been showing supporters a chart about the number of border crossings just minutes into his speech when the shots rang out. President Biden, in a nationally televised statement, expressed gratitude that Mr. Trump had been swiftly evacuated and said “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.” He later spoke to Mr. Trump, according to the White House.

The Republican National Committee, the Trump campaign and Haley's team did not immediately return a request for comment. Chaney Denton, a longtime senior aide to Haley told NBC News at the time that she "was not invited" to the convention and that "she's fine with that." Donald Trump will arrive at the 2024 Republican convention — his Republican convention, finally and completely, without the dissent of 2016 or the pandemic that overshadowed 2020 — closer than ever to a second term. But the likelihood of a Trump restoration has not yet brought clarity about what it would actually usher in. With Trump there is always the whipsaw, the forays toward normalcy and the reversion to a darker mean. Asked on the debate stage whether he would spend a second term seeking revenge on his political enemies, he promised that “my retribution is going to be success. Instead there are Trumpist scenarios and Trumpian personae — whose interactions, if he wins, will give his second term its shape.

Former President Donald Trump speaks during his campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club on July 09, 2024 in Doral, Florida. Meta said Friday it's removing any previously imposed penalties and restrictions on former President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, as the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election nears. In January 2023, Meta said it would reinstate Trump on its platform, and he regained access to his accounts the following month. But Trump was still subject to remaining penalties and restrictions that could have led to his social media accounts facing long suspensions. A Meta spokesperson characterized the update as "simply bringing presumptive GOP nominee Trump to parity with President Biden."

“It’s not defensible.”Yet, even as he seeks to keep the spotlight on Biden’s debate shortcomings, Trump is also entering a critical three-week stretch full of potential race-defining moments that could further alter the stakes of the election. The Republican convention in Milwaukee will kick off a mere four days later. Leveraging these moments presents opportunities for Trump to seize media coverage beyond the debate and further bolster his campaign coffers. Before the debate had even ended, Trump’s campaign sent supporters a text message declaring he had “obliterated” Biden along with a link to purchase new apparel. “I’ve always been of the opinion that this decision would come before the convention,” one Trump ally said.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gestures during a campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., June 22, 2024. Former President Donald Trump could announce his vice presidential pick as early as this week, possibly ahead of Thursday's debate, according to four people familiar with the situation. That gives him a limited window in which to introduce his running mate to the public. Trump's official spokespeople have regularly tamped down speculation about the timing of an announcement and the identity of Trump's running mate, and they did so again Tuesday.
