But it takes a lot more than being a hard worker who meets deadlines to be a standout employee. Hoskins has noticed that younger employees — Gen Zers and millennials —are especially good at establishing strong, empathetic relationships with higher-ups. If it's hard to find time on their calendar for a check-in, Cohen says you can still build a strong personal relationship with your boss with small gestures. What most employees don't realize, adds Hoskins, is that "as much as you want your boss to like you, they want you to like them too. So don't be afraid to be seen, to build a close relationship with them."

Workplace conflict often looks like high school drama, according to consultant Rosalind Wiseman. Wiseman is no stranger to teen drama — in fact, she literally wrote the book on it. The corporate world and high school aren't the same, but the similarities are striking"The answer that I should say is that, 'Oh, adults are so much more mature than kids,'" she told Business Insider when asked about how workplace drama compares to high school. Wiseman said workplace drama tends to look different than what you see in high school — teens can be far more "crass" — but the levels of sophistication in which the conflicts and undermining play out can be similar. AdvertisementWhatever the conflict, adults can end up feeling similar to high schoolers — excluded, taken advantage of, or even bullied.

Trump, who reached a trade agreement with Beijing in 2019 that later expired, has not mentioned any potential deal with China during his campaign for the 2024 nomination. Two Japanese foreign ministry officials said they fear that Trump may be prepared to weaken U.S. support for nearby Taiwan in pursuit of a deal with China. A Trump aide told Reuters that no recent meetings have taken place between Trump and Japanese officials. "If he is going to cut a deal with China, Japan needs to try and get ahead of the curve and understand its potential role to support its interests in both the U.S. and in China," said Machida. Robert O'Brien, Trump's former national security adviser, also has connections with Japanese officials, two of the sources said.

In the US, romance scams resulting from catfishing have among the highest reported financial losses of internet crimes as a whole. A 2019 study found that young LGBTQ+ men in rural America experiencing catfishing on dating apps felt angry and fearful. She also emphasized the need to recognize today’s loneliness epidemic, which “leads people to perhaps be more susceptible to catfishing scams,” she said. Catfishing is not explicitly a crime, but the actions that often accompany catfishing, such as extortion for money, gifts or sexual images are crimes in many places.
