The controversy over the Senate's new dress code may have finally reached its conclusion. Fetterman told his colleagues of the change at a caucus lunch on Wednesday. AdvertisementAdvertisementMaybe, just maybe, the controversy over the Senate's new dress code is arriving at its conclusion. AdvertisementAdvertisement"The whole silly dress code thing was discussed," Fetterman told Insider. The Pennsylvania Democrat has, until now, treated the altered dress code with a degree of levity, even selling merchandise riffing on the outrage over it.

A shutdown could risk Social Security payments and SNAP benefits. But with House Republicans in disarray , that seems unlikely to happen before the weekend deadline. But even if the Senate agrees on that measure, House Republicans continue to be at odds. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy told Punchbowl News on Tuesday that he wouldn't engage in "hypotheticals" when it comes to a clean Senate funding bill. AdvertisementAdvertisementStill, the Biden administration is continuing to place the blame on House Republicans for bringing the US to the brink of a government shutdown once again.

Come September 30, some Americans may not see a paycheck or be able to visit parks. For everyday Americans, that could mean losing out on paychecks or childcare spots, and it could even worsen flight delays. The Social Security Administration, for instance, anticipates about 8,500 employees would be furloughed in a shutdown. Travel plans might be further disrupted as Transportation Security Administration workers and air-traffic controllers go without pay, the White House said. The White House has repeatedly said Republicans are bringing Americans this close to another government shutdown.

Some Republicans are now saying they'll work across the aisle to keep the government open. It's getting members on both sides of the aisle antsy — and despite conservative pushback, some Republicans are willing to work with Democrats to get the job done. House Republicans need to do their job, keep the government open, and work with us to deliver — to deliver for the American people." Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said Republicans should not let the government shut down. Conservatives have attached demands to government funding, including a Biden impeachment inquiry. But conservatives are determined to find a solution so they can continue investigating President Joe Biden. But at this point, Republicans and Democrats have yet to agree on a solution that would avoid a government shutdown. "Speaker McCarthy also told us that starting next week, we aren't leaving until we get government funding done.

The delegation, which Mr. Schumer will lead alongside Senator Michael D. Crapo, Republican of Idaho, also plans to make stops in Japan and South Korea, according to spokespeople for both senators’ offices. The planned visit was reported earlier by Punchbowl News. Mr. Schumer has been supportive of the approach, cheering on the restrictions in particular as important steps to reduce China’s ability to threaten U.S. national security. Mr. Schumer has long been a hawk when it comes to China, with a record of blasting Beijing for currency manipulation, unfair trade practices and aggressive actions against Taiwan. He is now pushing to impose sanctions on China for its role in fentanyl trafficking and to rally senators around strategies to outpace China in the realm of artificial intelligence.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., plans to endorse an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in an effort to seek bank records and other documents from the president and his son Hunter Biden, two Republican sources familiar with the speaker's intentions told NBC News. McCarthy has signaled for weeks that the House could take up an impeachment inquiry, which would provide additional legal power to the House's investigations into the Biden family. It is unclear whether there are sufficient votes within the GOP conference to open an impeachment inquiry into the president. The White House is ramping up a war room to lead a response to a Republican impeachment inquiry, NBC News previously reported. McCarthy's move to endorse an impeachment inquiry into Biden comes amid pressure from right-wing Republicans, who are pushing back against a short-term funding bill to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month.

GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden cursed at and berated a group of teenage Senate pages for lying down in the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday. Both Senate Minority Leader and the Senate Majority Leader admonished Van Orden for his conduct. You are defiling the space you [pieces of shit]," Van Orden reportedly told the pages late Wednesday evening, according to The Hill. It doesn't appear that Van Orden checked with his colleagues before making such a statement. After hearing about Van Orden's actions toward the Senate pages, Schumer tore into the congressman.

GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley published an FBI document containing an unverified allegation made by a Ukrainian CEO. The Ukrainian executive boasted he'd bribed Joe and Hunter Biden, an FBI informant claimed. FBI told Insider the release of the document "at minimum — unnecessarily risks the safety of a confidential source." When he visited the country in March 2016, Joe Biden pressed hard for Shokin to be fired for corruption. Bloomberg also reported that the Burisma investigation was largely dormant when Biden called for Shokin to be fired.

Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif., who opposed a package of bills seeking to reform antitrust law to rein in Big Tech companies, will become the top Democrat on the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., announced Wednesday. CNBC first reported that Correa was the top contender for the role, despite his voting record on antitrust deviating from that of his predecessor. It resulted in a package of bills to limit their power that passed through the subcommittee under Cicilline's stewardship. But Correa and other California lawmakers on the subcommittee voted against the bills. WATCH: Here's why some experts are calling for a breakup of Big Tech after the House antitrust report

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., talks with reporters about the debt ceiling negotiations in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy have reached a deal to raise the federal government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, ending a months-long stalemate, Punchbowl News reported on Saturday. "House Republicans have an agreement in principle with the White House on a debt-limit deal. Exact details of the final deal were not immediately available, but negotiators have agreed to cap non-defense discretionary spending at 2023 levels for two years, in exchange for a debt ceiling increase over a similar period, sources told Reuters earlier. McCarthy has vowed to give House members 72 hours to read the legislation before bringing it to the floor for a vote.

Biden is set to meet with top lawmakers on Tuesday to discuss a potential debt ceiling agreement. McCarthy passed a bill in the House that would raise the debt ceiling through March of next year, and it was accompanied by over $4.5 trillion in spending cuts. Even so, some progressive lawmakers have warned the president that he should not bend on Democratic priorities to raise the debt ceiling. Multiple reports have suggested that the White House was considering compromising on rescinding unspent pandemic funding and energy permitting reform in a debt ceiling deal. Democrats – including President Biden – have been clear: these dangerous proposals are not going anywhere.

"There's a higher chance of a mistake here because of the politics of the situation" with damaging economic consequences, Dimon said. "I hope, one day, we get rid of it," he said, restating a call to scrap the debt limit permanently.
