Spy mania in Russia has created an environment that's stifling innovation, sources told BI. "You do have an inhibition on risk-taking, innovation," Portes told BI on the intensifying pursuit of foreign agents in Russia. Russia's economy is showing some signs that the kind of risk-taking associated with innovation and entrepreneurship is on the decline. Innovation in Russia has fallen behind the nation's level of development, according to a 2024 ranking from the World Intellectual Property Organization. We have plenty of examples in history where a war economy can keep on going, even though everything is crumbling around it.

ByteDance's publishing company, 8th Note Press, plans to release physical books. "This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for 8th Note Press," Jacob Bronstein, head of editorial and marketing, told Business Insider in a statement. Some advocates for gender-affirming care for youth say the report mischaracterizes the normal caution being taken by researchers to carefully present and interpret scientific data. “They’re in really good shape when they come in, and they’re in really good shape after two years,” Olson-Kennedy told the Times. Her description appears to contradict the baseline characteristics of the 95 study participants, which were published in 2022. Numerous studies have documented high rates of suicide and suicidal thoughts in transgender children and teenagers, and the physical changes of puberty can greatly increase the distress of feeling trapped in the wrong body. Nine children – about 4% of the sample – expressed regret over puberty blockers or hormones, and four discontinued their therapy.

The art market is in a correction as big spenders fade
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The number of wealthy collectors surveyed who plan to purchase art in the next year fell to 43% from over half in 2023. The median spending on art by wealthy collectors remains stable at around $50,000 a year, according to the survey. Higher interest rates also raised the opportunity cost of buying art, since wealthy collectors could earn an easy 5% or more from cash and Treasuries. Just as in the classic-car market, the art market is going through a generational shift that's created a mismatch between supply and demand. According to the survey, the high end of the art market, or works priced at $10 million or more, was the strongest before 2022.

Twenty-three Nobel Prize-winning economists endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in a joint letter released Wednesday. The nearly two dozen economists said Trump's economic agenda, which includes hardline tariff proposals and a slate of aggressive tax cuts, would "lead to higher prices, larger deficits, and greater inequality." Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for his market economics research in 2001, spearheaded the joint endorsement among his fellow laureates. Stiglitz led a similar effort to endorse President Joe Biden in June, publishing a letter signed by 16 Nobel laureates. That came just two days before the fateful presidential debate that ultimately derailed the president's reelection bid.
