He appealed the court order, which has been stayed, throwing Kate Cox's abortion in flux. Hours later, Paxton swooped in with an appeal to the Texas Supreme Court and an ominous threat to prosecute any doctor that provides an abortion to Cox. On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court put a temporary hold on the Travis County judge's order, preventing Cox's doctors from proceeding with the abortion. The Texas Supreme Court has yet to issue a ruling on the case. The Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing Cox, released a statement saying they hope the Texas Supreme Court ultimately rules in Cox's favor.

Private equity double-dips are a tasty faux pas

Private equity groups are trying something similar in the capital markets: successfully listing a company, then coming back for a second bite by buying it back once its stock craters. Take Synlab (SYAB.DE), listed at the height of a Covid-19 boom in testing by investment group Cinven. European companies listed by private equity groups since 2020 are trading, on average, at a 22% discount to their IPO price, according to data from Dealogic and Breakingviews calculations. The message from such deals, however, is that it’s better to buy a private equity-owned company after it has listed. Follow @aimeedonnellan on XCONTEXT NEWSPrivate equity firm Cinven on Sept. 29 offered 10 euros a share to take Covid test maker Synlab private.

When you think of office holiday party faux pas, drinking too much is probably the first one that comes to mind, says Brandon Smith, a career coach and therapist known as The Workplace Therapist. However, there's another common, but less stigmatized, mistake many people make at their end-of-year celebrations, he says: talking about work. "I would avoid talking about work at the holiday party," Smith says. 'Use this as an opportunity to socialize about topics that are non-business'Office parties are usually, by design, not in the office. Anything that is not specific to work projects.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Organizers of Wednesday's Coldplay concert in Malaysia can stop the show if the British rock band misbehaves, a minister said as the government rejected Muslim conservatives' calls to cancel the show. Led by the country's opposition bloc, Muslim conservatives have protested the concert over Coldplay’s support for the LGBTQ+ community. Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he doesn't foresee any problem with Coldplay's first concert in Malaysia later in the night. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has justified allowing the Coldplay concert, telling Parliament on Tuesday that “Coldplay is actually among the bands that support Palestine." Anwar said pro-Palestinian groups also approached his office in support of the Coldplay concert.

Sandu warned before the election that pro-Russian forces in the country, particularly fugitive business magnate Ilan Shor, had funnelled money into Moldova to "buy" voters. Shor's allies were barred from running two days before the first round and he complained from exile in Israel that the ruling had cost him electoral success. An independent won in Comrat, a town in the south where one of Shor's allies had won a regional vote earlier this year. A new report has an ominous warning for air travelers. "No matter what you do on a plane, you're probably annoying another passenger," it states. "When the unwritten rules of airlines etiquette are broached, it can lead to conflict," writes Lindsey Roeschke, a travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult who authored the report. Nearly one in five respondents said concerns about other passengers' behavior may deter them from taking a trip. Some 77% of people in the survey said they were "bothered" by it, with 51% saying they were "very bothered."

Where “The Dream,” a Ballet Theater staple in recent decades, is a reliable showcase for the company’s theatricality, George Balanchine’s “Ballet Imperial,” on the same program, is good for displaying the troupe’s classical chops across its ranks. Unlike New York City Ballet, which has called the work “Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2” since the 1970s, Ballet Theater doesn’t downplay the imperial Russian associations, using a backdrop of St. Petersburg. That’s a choice that might disturb some viewers, but Ballet Theater’s rendition also had aesthetic problems. De la Nuez goes for it, too.

French President Emmanuel Macron attends a video-conference with the families of French hostages by the Hamas militants who had entered Israel from the Gaza Strip, at the Elysee Palace in Paris, France, October 20, 2023. His advisers said that beyond showing solidarity with Israel, Macron wanted to make "proposals that are as operational as possible" to prevent an escalation, free hostages, guarantee Israel's security and work towards a two-state solution. The French leader upped the ante before the trip, telling reporters he would only travel to the region if he thought the visit would be "useful". Macron will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and centrist leaders Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid for the opposition. Macron has vowed on national television that France would "not abandon any of its children" in Gaza.

The job interview is nerve wracking — but there are plenty of ways to prepare to help you feel confident. I myself have messed up during job interviews and while I can't be sure to what extent these mess-ups had an impact, I didn't ultimately get offers for any of the jobs. Here are three mistakes I made in job interviews and why experts say you should avoid them. When you're doing a job interview, "your interviewer is asking themselves, can you do your job?" When you're going in for a job interview, use the job description, your experience of like work and any informational interviews to get a sense of the tasks you could be doing.

The ceremony to honor a fallen Russian soldier went viral for all the wrong reasons. The musical faux pas last May in the eastern Russian town of Kyakhta, home to a prominent infantry brigade, soon rocketed around social media. If the incident was discordant in the extreme, it also accentuated the contradictions of Vladimir Putin’s war that are changing the face of garrison towns across Russia. The local cemetery is growing exponentially. The flood of newly purchased cars in Kyakhta telegraphs loss as much as prosperity — the money comes from large government payouts to families of the dead and grievously injured.
