☆ US Proposes Forcing Google to Sell Chrome to Fix Search Monopoly

The request follows a landmark ruling in August by Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that found Google had illegally maintained a monopoly in online search. Judge Mehta asked the Justice Department and the states that brought the antitrust case to submit solutions by the end of Wednesday to correct the search monopoly. Beyond the sale of Chrome, the government asked Judge Mehta to give Google a choice: either sell Android, its smartphone operating system, or bar Google from making its services mandatory on phones that use Android to operate. If Google broke those terms, or the remedies failed to improve competition, the government could force the company to sell Android at a later date. Google should also be required by the court to allow rival search engines to display the company’s results and access its data for a decade, the government said.

A skydiver died on Saturday when his parachute failed to deploy, authorities in Louisiana said. The unidentified skydiver was described as an Asian male in a statement from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office. No one with the sheriff’s office or the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office was immediately reached Tuesday afternoon for additional comment. In January, a Colorado man died after his parachute failed to deploy. Only a few days later, a faulty parachute also led to the death of a 73-year-old Arizona man whose parachute failed to fully deploy.

WASHINGTON — The administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Deanne Criswell, is set to face questions from House lawmakers on Tuesday about the federal government's response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton that caused catastrophic damage in the Southeast. “And FEMA leadership didn’t take action against this supervisor until the press exposed this discrimination," his remarks say.
