“America does not do coronations,” Haley said at a VFW hall in Franklin, joined by her daughter and son-in-law. On paper, Trump had seemed more vulnerable in New Hampshire than in any other early voting state on the primary calendar. And Haley had been on the rise, prompting Trump’s campaign and its allies to spend millions trying to blunt her momentum. DeSantis immediately endorsed Trump upon dropping out, saying it was clear to him Republican voters preferred the former president. He is a juggernaut,” Haley campaign manager Betsy Ankney said at a weekend event hosted by Bloomberg.

And DeSantis himself is no longer around as a political deflector shield as Haley heads into Tuesday’s crucial New Hampshire primary. A CNN poll released Sunday, before DeSantis withdrew from the race, found he was the first choice of 6% of likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters said they’d vote for someone else. To them, DeSantis dropping out (and quickly endorsing Trump) wouldn’t make Haley look like the safer bet, but Trump. This rally-around-Trump message likely makes Haley supporters even more of an isolated minority in the GOP firmament.

Gail: If DeSantis weren’t such an awful candidate, this toppling of his campaign might be a little sad. Bret: The Trump endorsement was dishonorable but probably inevitable, politically speaking. If Trump wins the presidency, DeSantis will have to live with him as a governor; if Trump loses, he can try to court Trump’s voters in 2028. That’s assuming Trump isn’t on the ballot in 2028. CNN —The race for the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary appears to be former President Donald Trump’s to lose, according to a new CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire following Trump’s 30-point win in Iowa’s caucuses last week. Trump holds 50% support among likely Republican primary voters in the Granite State, while his closest competitor, former South Carolina Gov. Likely Republican and Democratic primary voters were identified through survey questions about their intention to vote. The poll, taken Tuesday through Friday, also found more registered Republicans in the state view Haley unfavorably (47%) than favorably (31%). The first-in-the-nation primary could be the last stand for the anti-Trump Republican. Since 2016, a shrinking band of Republican strategists, retired lawmakers and donors has tried to oust Donald J. Trump from his commanding position in the party. Ahead of New Hampshire’s primary on Tuesday, the old guard of the G.O.P. Anything but a very close finish for her in the state, where moderate, independent voters make up 40 percent of the electorate, would send Mr. Trump on an all-but-unstoppable march to the nomination. Yet, their long-running war against him has helped to frame the nominating contest around a central, and deeply tribal, litmus test: loyalty to Mr. Trump.

In other words, registered Democrats may vote only in the Democratic primary, and registered Republicans may vote only in the Republican primary. Unlike some other states, New Hampshire Republican delegates are not allocated by congressional district. DECISION NOTESTrump won a competitive New Hampshire primary in 2016 with 35% of the vote, more than double the showing of his nearest competitor, then-Ohio Gov. In the 2020 primaries, ballots cast before Election Day made up only 7% of Democratic primary votes and 4% of Republican primary votes. In the 2020 New Hampshire primary, the AP first reported results at 12:13 a.m.

Trump has also baselessly questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris, whose parents are immigrants, was eligible. Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who Trump also bested in that 2016 primary with taunts of “Little Marco,” also again endorsed Trump this week. It is actually Trump who faces more legitimate questions about his eligibility under the 14th Amendment. It is not true, as he alleges, that Democrats can take part in the GOP primary. “You have a group of people coming in that are not Republicans, and it’s artificially boosting her numbers here,” Trump said.

On Wednesday morning, Trump attacked Haley again, posting an altered photo of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with Haley’s face superimposed on it. Those ads have attacked Haley on immigration, something Trump’s team views as a top issue for Republicans in New Hampshire. During a rally in Atkinson, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, Trump accused Haley of “artificially boosting her numbers” by appealing to “Democrats and liberals to infiltrate” the GOP primary. Only Republicans and undeclared voters can participate in the New Hampshire GOP primary, and the deadline for Democrats to change their registration passed months ago. Rather than attacking Trump directly, Haley has lumped her former boss together with President Joe Biden — taking swipes at their ages.

As Mr. DeSantis’s team licked its wounds on Wednesday, his super PAC, Never Back Down, trimmed operations in several places, including Nevada. A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?

Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Authorities say the gunman who was killed after shooting to death a security guard at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital has been identified. He said CPR was performed on the victim, who later died at Concord Hospital. Authorities identified the victim Friday night as Bradley Haas, 63, a state Department of Safety security officer who was working at the front lobby entrance. All patients at the psychiatric hospital were safe, and the state trooper who killed the shooter was not wounded, according to authorities. “Investigators with the New Hampshire State Police have searched and cleared a suspicious box truck near the scene.

New Hampshire’s presidential primary will be held Jan. 23, state officials announced on Wednesday. The date had been in contention since the Democratic National Committee decided earlier this year to change its nominating calendar, which had long given New Hampshire the first primary slot after the Iowa caucuses. The new Democratic calendar puts South Carolina first, followed by New Hampshire and Nevada together on one day, then Georgia, then Michigan. But New Hampshire officials have made clear that they will refuse to abide by the D.N.C.’s decision. “We will be holding our primary first,” Ray Buckley, the chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, said last year after initial reports that the D.N.C.

New Hampshire Democrats announced on Wednesday that they will hold their presidential primary on Jan. 23 – flouting President Joe Biden and the national party’s plans to anoint South Carolina with the first primary contest. Biden had already elected not to register in New Hampshire, and his name won’t appear on the Democratic presidential primary ballot next year. But the move isn’t without repercussions by the Democratic National Committee, including the potential loss of state delegates to the party convention. The Granite State has held the so-called “first in the nation” primary for more than a century, and a state law enacted in 1975 requires it to occur at least seven days before any other state’s primary or on the second Tuesday in March. Roughly 93% of New Hampshire’s 1.4 million residents are white, according to the U.S. Census, compared to 75% of the U.S. overall.

CNN —President Joe Biden is just as low in the White House’s internal polls as in any of the public ones. But while Biden advisers are dismissive of Rep. Dean Phillips’ primary challenge launched this week, they are also annoyed about it. Still, they remain confident that Biden is Democrats’ best option in 2024. Boyle told CNN this week that between the war in Israel and Gaza and the chaos of House Republicans electing their new speaker, he had not had “one conversation with anyone” about Phillips. Asked if he was worried about Phillips being a factor even back home in their state’s primary, Walz laughed.

Now more options are beginning to emerge. Rep. Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) on Friday launched a quixotic bid to challenge Biden in New Hampshire’s unsanctioned Democratic primary, tapping into the frustration many voters have conveyed about the unfolding 2024 field and offering a window into what could be an unsettled presidential campaign next year with multiple third-party candidates.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — For months, Dean Phillips has been calling for a Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. Asked by CBS News in an interview posted late Thursday if he was running for president, Phillips responded: “I am. I have to.”“I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country,” he said. New Hampshire has refused to comply, citing state laws saying its primary must go first, and plans a primary before South Carolina’s. “To do well in the New Hampshire primary, you have to have a message.”There are no primary debates scheduled, according to the DNC.

CNN —Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips announced Thursday that he is running for president, kicking off a long-shot Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. “I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country, but it’s not about the past. Phillips is expected to formally announce his campaign Friday in Concord, where he’ll file to run in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary. Biden will not file to appear on the New Hampshire Democratic primary ballot because the state isn’t complying with the national party’s revised nominating calendar, which demoted its first-in-the-nation primary status to second. Although several key details about next year’s New Hampshire primary have yet to be determined, the event has begun to take shape. The South Carolina Democratic primary on Feb. 3 is the earliest contest on the Democratic National Committee's official calendar. Why won’t Biden’s name appear on the New Hampshire primary ballot?
