Eli Lilly headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, US, on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. A panel of independent advisors to the Food and Drug Administration on Monday recommended Eli Lilly 's Alzheimer's drug donanemab, paving the way for the treatment to receive full approval in the U.S. later this year. If cleared for use, Eli Lilly's donanemab would become the second Alzheimer's drug of its kind to enter the U.S. market after another treatment called Leqembi from Biogen and its Japanese partner Eisai. In a second vote, advisors unanimously said the benefits of Eli Lilly's donanemab outweigh its risks. It was another blow to Eli Lilly, which initially expected donanameb to win approval at the end of last year.

The Conversation —Dry scalp? Flaky or dry scalp is an extremely common condition, but in severe cases it certainly doesn’t feel trivial. Scabs may be unsightly, or itchy, but they’re performing the job they’re supposed to — keeping out bugs and allowing wounds to heal. Fresh, healthy earwax tends to be yellow to honey-brown in color, whereas older, thicker earwax becomes darker brown, sometimes even black. Blood, sweat and tears — and wax, skin and mucus — can cause many commonplace issues.

Seventeen years later, gentle parenting is now the default among my professional-class millennial peers. Teachers blame gentle parenting for bad behavior in classrooms, which some believe is accelerating an exodus from the profession. Ample research links an authoritative parenting style — such as gentle parenting — with the most favorable psychosocial outcomes in children. These are among the questions that gentle parents must contend with, often on the fly. When gentle parenting goes wrong, everyone takes note.

A new study has possibly captured that objectively, finding that for teens diagnosed with internet addiction, signaling between brain regions important for controlling attention, working memory and more was disrupted. Specifically, internet ‘addiction,’ which was initially conjured up by (psychiatrist) Ivan K. Goldberg in 1995 as a joke. Das wasn’t involved in the study. “Overall, the mechanisms underlying internet addiction are more like an emerging pattern than a finished picture,” Chang said. “Similar to substance and gambling disorders, internet addiction rewires the brain, making it harder to resist internet related stimuli,” he added.

CNN —When you’re trying to address mental health symptoms, simply the belief that you can be helped may be an important factor. Symptoms of nine mental health disorders substantially improved under placebo treatment, according to a new review of 90 randomized controlled trials — known as a meta-analysis — totaling 9,985 adult participants largely in their 30s and 40s. “This is the most comprehensive study of placebo effects in psychiatry.”The results are also important for patient treatment, Bschor said. But for disorders that didn’t see as much improvement with placebos — such as OCD or schizophrenia, which is a psychotic disorder — medication may be more necessary. Improvement in absence of medicationThat mental health symptoms improved with placebo treatment may be due to a few potential influences, experts said.

Bederson, system chair for the Department of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Health System, is no stranger to long hours in an operating room. In fact, it marked the 14th time that the company has placed its array on a human patient's brain. Four of Precision's arrays were carefully laid out on a table nearby. Using a pair of yellow tweezers called long bayonet forceps, Bederson began placing all four of Precision's electrode arrays onto the patient's brain. Real-time renderings of the patient's brain activity swept across Precision's monitors in the operating room.

For some, they are the thing of nightmares – omphalophobia (the fear of belly buttons) is a real condition. Whatever your feelings about belly buttons, one thing’s for sure - it once joined you to your mother. The umbilical cord is severed at birth to leave just a small clamped stump that progressively withers and falls away a week or two later. From this point, the belly button seems to become redundant – other than to gather dust and fluff. This circulation is not needed after the baby is born, and once disconnected from the placenta the umbilical vessels naturally close up.

A Peek Inside the Brains of ‘Super-Agers’
  + stars: | 2024-04-29 | by ( Dana G. Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When it comes to aging, we tend to assume that cognition gets worse as we get older. For a little over a decade, scientists have been studying a subset of people they call “super-agers.” These individuals are age 80 and up, but they have the memory ability of a person 20 to 30 years younger. Most research on aging and memory focuses on the other side of the equation — people who develop dementia in their later years. A paper published Monday in the Journal of Neuroscience helps shed light on what’s so special about the brains of super-agers. The biggest takeaway, in combination with a companion study that came out last year on the same group of individuals, is that their brains have less atrophy than their peers’ do.

Two-thirds of savings are associated with drug research and development, Bristol Myers Squibb executives said during an earnings call on Thursday. Those deals come as Bristol Myers faces pressure to launch new drugs and offset the potential loss of revenue from top-selling treatments. Shares of Bristol Myers fell more than 1% in premarket trading Tuesday.

While debate rages on about when the Federal Reserve might start cutting interest rates, biotech industry analysts are making the case that the argument for stocks in the sector is growing. Last week, Morgan Stanley analysts noted that it is the months leading up to an initial rate cut when biotech stocks outperform. Morgan Stanley also believes the case for biotech stocks is further reinforced by the financing environment and the outlook for mergers and acquisitions as well as upcoming innovation. The case for innovation Morgan Stanley also favors owning biotech stocks that have a strong drug platform even if the key catalyst of clinical trial data and FDA approvals are farther out. Rhythm ranks among the stocks rated overweight that Morgan Stanley favors in this category.

Eli Lilly headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, US, on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Eli Lilly said Friday that the Food and Drug Administration has pushed back its approval decision deadline for the drugmaker's experimental Alzheimer's treatment donanemab in a surprise move. The agency plans to call a last-minute meeting of its outside advisors to further review the treatment's safety and efficacy in a late-stage trial, Eli Lilly said. It's another setback for Eli Lilly, which is racing to compete with Biogen and Eisai. In 2021, the FDA approved an earlier, ill-fated Alzheimer's drug called Aduhelm from Biogen and Eisai, despite a negative recommendation from the agency's advisory panel.
