What Nvidia's stock split means for retail investors
  + stars: | 2024-05-23 | by ( Samantha Subin | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Nvidia's upcoming stock split could propel the chipmaker higher over the short run and boost already enthusiastic investor sentiment, according to Wall Street. Nvidia's results prompted many Wall Street firms to boost their price targets on the stock as demand continues. While a split may improve accessibility by lowering the share price, it doesn't alter the value or fundamentals of the business. Citi's Atif Malik called the split a "positive surprise," while Susquehanna's Christopher Rolland said it "invigorates the retail crowd." "The 10:1 stock split likely adds short-term momentum to this AI bellwether," said Needham's Quinn Bolton.

Industry analysts think the AI revolution is still in its early stages, and longtime fund manager Chris Retzler agrees. But the market veteran believes small, under-the-radar growth stocks—not the well-known companies that have already surged — are the best way to play the AI boom. AdvertisementHow to invest in small caps — and where to find themSince 2008, Retzler has single-handedly managed the Needham Small Cap Growth Fund (NESGX). Plus, investors are overlooking small-cap stocks' exposure to key growth opportunities like AI, data center buildouts, military modernization, and telecommunication improvements, in Retzler's view. "Money doesn't go immediately to small caps — it goes to the next market cap, generally," Retzler said.

Bitcoin miners brace for impact as halving goes live
  + stars: | 2024-04-21 | by ( Mackenzie Sigalos | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +17 min
The technical event is relatively simple: Bitcoin miners get paid in bitcoin to validate transactions, and after 210,000 blocks of transactions are computed and added to the main chain, the reward given to the miners securing bitcoin is 'halved.' The aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin miners tracked by JPMorgan analysts declined 28% over the first half of April to $14.2 billion, reaching year-to-date lows. Some have billed the 2024 bitcoin halving as a seminal moment for the mining sector. Marathon, along with other mining firms, has begun diversifying its business model into ancillary operations beyond purely bitcoin mining. Sullivan continued, "Bitcoin mining sites can only be repurposed if they meet the attributes that are required for HPC.

Netflix surpassed earnings expectations and said it will stop disclosing quarterly subscriber numbers and average revenue per membership next year. The bitcoin halving is set to take place in the next few days, which will cut miners' main stream of revenue in half. "We believe a bitcoin price above $60,000-$65,000 means the halving is de-risked for nearly all public miners," Needham analyst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. It currently costs miners between $36,000 and $52,700 to mine a single bitcoin, Todaro said. Miners offer amplified exposure to bitcoin's price action, which has been more volatile since the launch of bitcoin ETFs introduced more leverage to the market. "That's propelled bitcoin to a threshold where the miners are really generating healthy economics," said Colonnese.

While debate rages on about when the Federal Reserve might start cutting interest rates, biotech industry analysts are making the case that the argument for stocks in the sector is growing. Last week, Morgan Stanley analysts noted that it is the months leading up to an initial rate cut when biotech stocks outperform. Morgan Stanley also believes the case for biotech stocks is further reinforced by the financing environment and the outlook for mergers and acquisitions as well as upcoming innovation. The case for innovation Morgan Stanley also favors owning biotech stocks that have a strong drug platform even if the key catalyst of clinical trial data and FDA approvals are farther out. Rhythm ranks among the stocks rated overweight that Morgan Stanley favors in this category.
