Unrivaled, the new and upcoming pro women's basketball league, signed an exclusive, multiyear media rights deal to air its games on TNT and truTV, as well as streaming platform Max. The heightened interest in the WNBA led to the league's most recent media rights deal being valued at $2.2 billion for 11 seasons, CNBC previously reported. The WNBA's media rights deal is negotiated as part of the NBA's agreement. The media rights deal with Unrivaled gives Turner Sports the opportunity to keep basketball on its air if it is not successful in its lawsuit. But I also know that some legacy media executives are already thinking about 2029 and brainstorming internally about how they can afford to compete against the tech giants for NFL games. The NBA, in its most recent rights deal, only wanted three media packages to help with consumer confusion and subscription fatigue. Given how popular NFL games are versus everything else on TV, the architecture of the NFL rights is the single biggest decision in the American media industry.

Hoda Kotb will be leaving her role as a co-anchor on NBC's "TODAY" show early next year, she announced in a letter to staff on Thursday. Kotb first joined NBC News in 1998 as a correspondent, regularly appearing on "Dateline." Local fans of the NBA's Denver Nuggets and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche will have some new ways to watch their teams' games this season. Beginning this season, there will be 20 Nuggets and 20 Avalanche games on Tegna's free local over-the-air broadcasts, 9NEWS and My20. The platform will give fans in the Denver media market access to all Avalanche and Nuggets games for $19.95 a month. Stars games will be available on streaming service Victory+ this season, and the local Ducks games will be available via Victory+ and a local over-the-air broadcast. These pay TV contracts help support the billions of dollars in fees that the networks pay professional sports leagues to air their games.
