The sewage is exposed to the air and causes a lot of nausea and headaches,” said Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a nonprofit group assisting Latino state residents, which has advised mobile home park residents who sued. It is very expensive,” said Yvonne Maldonado, a co-director of Manufactured Housing Action, a nonprofit group that focuses on such communities. “We have recently seen private equity enter the manufactured housing market," PESP housing research coordinator Madeline Bankson said. During hurricanes, the National Weather Service has said, 72% of deaths occur in homes, and of those, 54% occur in mobile homes. She also urged mobile home park residents to organize their communities and if there are complaints, to do it as a group, which is more effective.

Then, less than six hours after giving birth, O’Neil was wheeled through the labor and delivery unit to go home. Racial disparities persist, she added; for Black people, the preterm birth rate is 1.5 times higher than the rate among all other babies. Many of the regions with high preterm birth rates are maternity care deserts, Williams said. The US cities with high preterm birth rates also are “areas where there are many chronic conditions and patients living with a greater number of things like hypertension, diabetes, obesity – those are all drivers of preterm birth as well,” Williams said. “Every pregnant woman who lives in a maternal health care desert should be provided with access to a health care app that is monitored by remote providers.

Amazon has rolled out a new storefront featuring apparel, home goods, electronics and other items priced below $20, to fend off growing competition from discount upstarts Temu and Shein. Called "Amazon Haul," the storefront is accessible through the company's mobile app, and promises "crazy low prices" on a plethora of goods. CNBC previously reported that Amazon planned to launch its own discount webstore with goods shipped directly from China. With Amazon Haul, the company is responding to the rise of Temu, Shein and TikTok Shop, which all have ties to China, the world's second-largest economy. Amazon is able to offer low prices through its Haul storefront by importing each item directly from manufacturers in China, similar to how Temu's and Shein's business models operate.

AdvertisementSpotify is going after YouTube's video podcast dominance with a new revenue program for creators. The company will also no longer insert ads into video podcasts shown to paid subscribers. Spotify seems to be tired of playing second fiddle to YouTube when it comes to video podcasting. Spotify said payments for non-ad-supported video podcasts would be calculated based on how much a creator's content is viewed. Outside its creator monetization program, Spotify also announced on Wednesday that it rebranded its "Spotify for podcasters" program to "Spotify for creators," signaling a desire to draw in a wider set of video and audio talent to its platform.

U.S. and Canadian banks reported a tenfold surge in digital scams this year as criminals flock to techniques that rely on duping customers into sending them money, according to cybersecurity firm BioCatch. Banks are under pressure to kick criminals off their platforms and compensate more victims as regulators and lawmakers focus on the harm done by digital scams. Customers of the three banks reported a combined $166 million in Zelle transactions were fraudulent in 2023. HONG KONG — Businesses and consumers in China found the annual Singles’ Day shopping festival less attractive this year due to a sluggish economy, forcing e-commerce firms to look abroad for growth. While Singles’ Day was previously a one-day event, shopping platforms in China now kickstart the festival weeks ahead to drum up sales volume. But amid China’s lagging domestic economy, dragged down by a real estate crisis and deflationary pressures, consumers no longer go all out during the shopping extravaganza. Wang said that the prices offered on e-commerce platforms during Singles’ Day are not necessarily cheaper than usual. “I used to buy a lot two or three years ago and I even purchased a mobile phone (during Singles’ Day),” he said.

President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House has sent ripples through global financial markets, with many investors looking to recalibrate their portfolios for a dramatically different policy landscape ahead. Higher Treasury yields mean higher interest rates for corporate borrowers. Trump's tariffs Perhaps the biggest concern for investors globally is Trump's campaign promise of aggressive new tariffs , including the potential for a universal 10% tariff on all imports and a 60% tariff on Chinese goods. However, some Asian nations might benefit if higher tariffs on China prompt manufacturers to relocate. Europe Most analysts agree that U.S. trade tariffs are likely to hurt Europe, with some companies able to navigate the challenges better than others.

Twilio could be a standout name as software stocks bounce back heading into the end of the year, according to Wells Fargo. Analyst Michael Turrin upgraded San Francisco-based Twilio to overweight from equal weight and lifted his price target by 50%, or $40, to $120 from $80. That suggests 28% potential upside for the cloud-based communication software company, which has already gained nearly 24% year to date. Underlying Turrin's investment thesis is his belief that software vendors will lead the next phase of AI development. "We believe Twilio can serve as a pick-and-shovel play for the next wave of AI-native front office and communications-powered genAI applications," Turrin said, highlighting the company's integration with OpenAI's Realtime API that allows developers to build low latency speech to speech AI agents into applications.

Manufactured housing, sometimes called mobile homes, are homes made in a factory rather than constructed on site, and they have been surging in popularity this year amid America’s housing crisis. Instead, they’re turning to the internet for lower-cost options, whether a pop-up foldable house kit, a tiny home or a traditional mobile home. Amazon is not the first major retailer to sell manufactured homes. More than 100 years ago, American retailer Sears, Roebuck and Co began selling kit homes from its catalog, with some for under $1,000. A 2023 Urban Institute paper argued that mobile homes were “uniquely vulnerable” to natural disasters compared to other housing.

But for some people, this is the dream: They're watching Netflix at 1.5x speed. What craven need for speed goes on in the dopamine-wrecked frontal cortex of someone who watches stuff at super speed? Netflix's "Love Is Blind" was mentioned several times as an example of something great to speed watch. Our modern, insatiable appetite for video content might mean that we've adapted and stretched our brains to watch faster and faster. As much as I'd like to accuse these speed watchers of being monsters, I have to consider my own preferred method of watching movies: at regular speed, on the big TV — but looking at my phone the entire time.
