Takeaways From a Grammy Night Where Women Reigned
  + stars: | 2024-02-04 | by ( Ben Sisario | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Women thoroughly dominated the 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, with a history-making album of the year win by Taylor Swift and victories by Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, SZA, Lainey Wilson, the Colombian pop star Karol G and the band boygenius. The wins capped a year when women were extraordinarily successful in pop music, and also signified a change for the Grammys, which have frequently been criticized — as recently as five years ago — for overlooking female artists on the show. In addition to the wins, the show featured powerful performances by SZA, Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and even Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman — two godmothers of modern songwriting who have made only rare public appearances in recent years. In taking album of the year for “Midnights,” Swift became the first artist to win the Grammys’ top prize four times, beating a trio of male legends — Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon — who had three.

22 Looks That Did the Most at the Grammys

The music industry’s biggest stars attended the 66th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in attire as varied as their songs and albums. (Ms. McKee complemented her red dress with a nest of fiery hair.) Several of the night’s most memorable looks reminded viewers that there’s nothing wrong with replaying old hits. The Grammy Awards are known to be a fashion playground, and this year’s event was no exception. But the following 22 looks (three of which belonged to the members of boygenius) stood out more than most, for better or worse.

Anyone who watched the Disney Channel in the early 2010s will recognize Jones' onscreen magnetism and precocious vocal skill. "One thing about 'Let It Shine,' it's going to follow me until the wheels fall off," Jones said. "What I Didn't Tell You" is the product of studious passion; Jones honors the R&B tradition without relying on imitation.

Those include two major categories: record of the year (for the single “Not Strong Enough”) album of the year (for their debut “The Record” ). If they win either of those, they'd be the first “all-female” group to do so since the Chicks in 2007. But they're into the “The Chicks to the Boys” lineage, as Baker repeats it. “It means a lot because the project means a lot,” Bridgers says of their nominations. But for now, looking back at the success of “The Record,” there's only one question left to ask.

Who Will Have the Biggest Grammy Night?
  + stars: | 2024-01-31 | by ( Ben Sisario | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday are poised to be a celebration of a dominant year for women in pop music, with female stars like SZA, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish facing off in the major categories. Swift and SZA each have the potential for landmark wins. For an award show that in the past has been criticized for its treatment of female stars, its lineup alone is being interpreted as a sign of progress. But the show this year is taking place in the shadow of lawsuits against two former Grammy leaders, accusing each of sexual assault. Industry politics, vote-splitting and a shifting membership have the potential, as always, to scramble outcomes, despite expectations about who may win or lose.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Women lead the major categories at the Grammys this year – names like SZA, Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandy Clark top the list. If Taylor Swift wins for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist in Grammy history to win the top prize four times. (And, conversely, artists it loves to nominate but not award: both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have yet to receive a Grammy. I'd love to see a Cyrus win, but I’ve been burned before! She’s tied with the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus with six nominations, and I think it is her time to finally take home a trophy.

I sat down with Dolly Parton and realized she's an expert when it comes to all things Southern food. Dolly Parton loves cooking traditional Southern food like corn bread. Bridget Bennett/AFP via Getty ImagesOn top of being a legendary musician and a fashion icon, Parton is also a great chef. "Miley and I both love Southern food like mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and a big ol' hunk of corn bread — making corn-bread muffins or a big pan of it with the squares," Parton told me. Dolly Parton (Really) Rocks

solo studio releases to her name, Dolly Parton just scored the highest charting album of her career, the mammoth double LP “Rockstar,” which debuted on this week’s Billboard 200 at No. “Rockstar” is not an album so much as a referendum on how incredibly well-liked Parton is at this moment. “This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ’n’ roll album at some point in the future,” she wrote in a statement. I disagree with the notion that Dolly Parton wasn’t a rock star until she released an album called “Rockstar” — it feels like too narrow and literal an understanding of genre. And, as I argue with today’s playlist, she’s been reshaping rock ’n’ roll in her own style for her entire career.

CNN —It’s already a vital American truth that Dolly Parton is a national treasure, and has been for decades. From there, Parton saw a challenge to become a rockstar in her own right, and after her husband suggested she do a rock album, she embarked on the journey, culminating with Friday’s release of her appropriately titled forty-ninth (!!) Cover of "Rockstar" by Dolly Parton. Butterfly Records/APThe second track is also an original song, “World on Fire,” which dutifully tries to ruffle some feathers (like a rockstar would) by commenting on the state of the world today. Opinion: Why I’m not going to have children
  + stars: | 2023-11-11 | by ( Opinion Anna Lee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
But each day, the current state of the world dissuades me more and more from having children. Like many folks in Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012), my main concern is climate change. As environmental catastrophes reach a caliber we cannot predict or conceive, having children is becoming less of a risk I’m willing to take. Coupled with the resources and opportunities that the US provides, my hypothetical children likely wouldn’t be among the worst-affected by climate change. Under today’s environmental and political climate, I find it is better to regret not having children than regret having them.
