All 16 are facing eight criminal charges, including forgery and conspiracy to commit election forgery, that were first announced in July by state Attorney General Dana Nessel. Michigan is one of seven states where false Electoral College certificates were submitted declaring Trump the winner, despite confirmed results showing he had lost. On Sept. 18, Nessel, a Democrat, told a liberal group during a virtual event that the false electors had been “brainwashed” and “genuinely” believed Trump won in Michigan’. George MacAvoy Brown, an attorney for Henry, said in a statement that the charges require proof that Henry “intended to cheat or deceive someone” and that Nessel's comments show that wasn't the case. Henry and several others, including Maddock and Kathy Berden, Michigan’s Republican national committeewoman, are scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination hearing on Oct. 12.

In seeking the rematch with James in the suburban district north of Detroit, Marlinga is hoping to extend his party's recent winning streak in Michigan. A former Macomb County judge and prosecutor, Marlinga beat out four other Democrats last year to win the party's nomination. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats, has said the district is one of 31 GOP-held seats they will “aggressively target” in 2024. Last year, Democrats swept statewide races, flipped the state House and Senate and won three of four U.S. House races that were expected to be competitive. James lost U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020 before narrowly winning the House race while holding significant advantages in name recognition and fundraising.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican Mike Rogers, who served in Congress for 14 years and chaired the House Intelligence Committee, is running for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan that Democrats have held for over two decades. The announcement, which was provided to The Associated Press in a campaign video on Wednesday, instantly shakes up a Senate race that had been relatively quiet and dominated by Democratic candidates. It's seen as a recruiting victory for Michigan Republicans, who have struggled to win statewide races with a state party in turmoil. The GOP has not won a Michigan U.S. Senate race since 1994. Defending the Michigan seat may prove crucial for Democrats, who face tough headwinds as they defend seats in Republican-leaning states from West Virginia to Montana and Ohio.

The Michigan Republican Party is starving for cash. This turmoil is one measure of the way Donald J. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election have rippled through his party. Mr. Trump’s election lies spread like wildfire in Michigan, breaking the state party into ardent believers and pragmatists wanting to move on. Bitter disputes, power struggles and contentious primaries followed, leaving the Michigan Republican Party a husk of itself. No Republican has won a statewide election there since Mr. Trump won the state in 2016.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump has attracted a lot of attention for his lead in the polls and the money race, but he’s also already ahead in an essential area that’s gotten less notice: the delegate process. Republicans often point to Jeff Roe, who is leading the pro-DeSantis super PAC, as an expert on the delegate process. The delegate process rivalry between DeSantis and Trump speaks to the overall strategy of many of these campaigns. Trump’s state party advantageIn 2016, the idea that Donald Trump would eventually have deep roots with state Republican party officials seemed outlandish. The Trump campaign denies the former president ever made such a comment.

Seen on a television screen, Amy Facchinello (L) is arraigned via Zoom in Ingham County District Court on August 10, 2023 in Lansing, Michigan. All 16 Michigan Republicans accused in a fake elector scheme to keep former President Donald Trump in power are challenging the charges, after the final nine either pleaded not guilty or had a judge enter the pleas on their behalf Thursday in state court. Seven entered not guilty pleas in previous court appearances. The court appearances in Michigan come one week after Trump pleaded not guilty in federal court to charges related to his effort to overturn the results of his 2020 election loss. Prosecutors say the former president, along with six unnamed co-conspirators, orchestrated a scheme to enlist fake electors in seven battleground states won by Democrat Joe Biden to submit false certificates to the federal government.

Two Michigan Republicans charged with purporting to be electors for President Donald J. Trump in 2020 appeared before a state judge on Friday, adding to a flurry of court action this week tied to efforts to overturn the last presidential election. Earlier in the week, a grand jury in another part of Michigan indicted prominent Republicans on charges connected to improper access to voting machines. Judge Kristen D. Simmons of the State District Court in Lansing agreed to give defense lawyers until October to review “voluminous” discovery materials in the felony case. From her small wood-paneled courtroom in Lansing City Hall, across the street from the State Capitol, Judge Simmons spoke over a video conference link with Ms. Maddock, Ms. Henry and their lawyers. She agreed to allow each defendant, who could face lengthy prison sentences if convicted, to take a trip out of state before trial.

Stefanie Lambert Junttila, who along with other Trump allies tried to reverse Trump's defeat to Democratic President Joe Biden in Michigan, was charged with accessing, tampering with and undue possession of voting machines in the state, according to court records. Lambert was the third person charged in Michigan this week after a special prosecutor in that state reviewed allegations that Trump allies illegally accessed voting machines after the 2020 election. Two other Michigan Republicans, former Michigan attorney general candidate Matt DePerno, and Daire Rendon, a former state representative, made their initial court appearances on Tuesday in connection with the case. He has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he retained classified documents after leaving office and New York state charges that he falsified documents in connection with hush money payments to a porn star. Trump may soon face more charges in Georgia, where a state prosecutor is investigating his attempts to overturn the election there.

Michigan's fake GOP electors surrendered their phones to avoid being recorded during a 2020 meeting. They face general forgery counts and election law forgery allegations. These 16 fake electors, charging documents say, took extra steps to keep their plot secret. The fake electors were told no recording equipment was allowed inside the building and they were asked to surrender their cell phones to safeguard against possible recording, prosecutors said. Some of the fake electors expressed frustration about how other fake electors were talking about the fake transmission of votes to Congress, according to charging documents.

Some of the GOP electors in Michigan were local activists who were recruited to serve as “fake electors,” all while inaccurately believing there was still a chance that then-President Donald Trump might secure a second consecutive term. CNN has reached out to the 16 fake electors for comment about the criminal charges. Here’s what we know about the 16 fake electors facing state charges. Meshawn Maddock, 55, was co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party during the 2020 campaign and is married to a GOP member of the Michigan House of Representatives. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced charges against 16 "fake" electors. The felony charges mark a historic first against a pro-Trump scheme to overturn the 2020 election. Nessel's decision is the first time that pro-Trump electors who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election are facing state charges. They are often called fake electors since President Joe Biden's electors were the duly elected representatives based on the state's certified election results. Each of the 16 individuals will face charges related to forgery generally and election law forgery, specifically.

Michigan Rep. John James endorsed former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign on Tuesday. James said at the time that Trump "can't be trusted" and is "not fit to lead." When Trump seemingly called for the "termination" of the US Constitution in December, James condemned Trump in stark terms. "A man who would suspend the Constitution can't be trusted," James said at the time, according to local Michigan news outlet WLNS. Unlike many of the Republicans who have already backed Trump's campaign, James represents a swing district, and is likely to face a tough challenge from Democrats next year.

Kristina Karamo, chair of the Michigan state party, didn't respond to a request for comment for this story. The Arizona party, meanwhile, raised roughly $139,000 in the first three months of this year, according to state and federal filings. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office report, issued Friday morning, confirms Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's earlier warnings that a default could come as early as June 1. Congress' budget scorekeeper also noted that the federal government's debt payments "will remain uncertain throughout May, even if the Treasury ultimately runs out of funds in early June." She also said she remained optimistic that the debt limit problem would be resolved. A senior Treasury official told Reuters she would do that with board members of the Bank Policy Institute lobby group. Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger said members of the U.S. Congress ought to have their paychecks withheld until the debt limit problem is resolved.
I once took an orphaned deer mouse to a nearby wildlife rehabilitator, and she cautiously introduced it to a nursing house mouse who was also in her care. The mouse accepted the baby stranger of another species and raised it as her own. Even in the wild, there are documented instances of what appears to be interspecies adoption — a killer whale raising a pilot whale calf, a southern right whale raising a baby humpback, a lioness raising a leopard cub. Plus, RockBaby wasn’t gaping for food or crying for help in that impossible-to-ignore way of needy babies everywhere. RockBaby wasn’t even animate.
