PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in a tribal area in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 38 people and wounding 29, the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, said. Among the fatalities in the attack, which occurred in the Kurram tribal district, were a woman and a child, Chaudhry said, adding: “It’s a major tragedy and death toll is likely to rise.”Tensions have existed for decades between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute in the tribal area that borders Afghanistan. No group claimed responsibility for the incident. “There were two convoys of passenger vehicles, one carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and another from Parachinar to Peshawar, when armed men opened fire on them,” a local resident of Parachinar, Ziarat Hussain, told Reuters by telephone, adding that his relatives were traveling from Peshawar in the convoy. President Asif Ali Zardari, in a statement, strongly condemned the attack on passenger vehicles.

Senate Republicans offered mixed responses Thursday to President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will nominate Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality accused of sexual assault, to lead the Defense Department following the release of a police report concerning sexual assault allegations against him. Some senators defended Trump's pick, while others voiced some trepidation, and a senator told NBC News "I don't care" when approached about a police report released Wednesday tied to an allegation of sexual assault against Hegseth in 2017. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., also defended Trump's pick, saying he had reviewed the report and would push for Hegseth's confirmation. Two other picks to serve in top jobs in Trump's Cabinet have also faced potentially damaging allegations of sexual misconduct. After Gaetz withdrew his name, Sen. A Georgia woman who reported her 20-month-old son missing in 2022, setting off a large search until his remains were found in a landfill, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for his killing. She was sentenced in a Chatham County court to life with the possibility of parole. Simon reported her son missing from their home in Chatham County, near Savannah, on Oct. 5, 2022. Quinton Simon. Jordan Neely died from the “combined effects” of a number of a factors, not a chokehold, a forensic pathologist hired by Daniel Penny’s attorneys testified Thursday. Penny is charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the chokehold death of Neely on a New York City subway train in May 2023. Penny, 26, who was a passenger on the train, put Neely in a chokehold and took him to the ground. Chundru said he did not believe that Neely died of a chokehold or that Penny had applied consistent and sufficient pressure to render him unconscious. Chundru said he believed Neely died from “the combined effects of sickle cell crisis, the schizophrenia, the struggle and restraint and the synthetic marijuana” that was in his system.
