BEIJING — Chinese tech giant Baidu on Thursday posted a 3% annual drop in third-quarter revenue, nevertheless beating market expectations amid AI cloud growth. Baidu noted a 12% surge in its non-online marketing revenue to the equivalent of $1.1 billion, mainly driven by its artificial intelligence cloud business. Beijing-based Baidu operates one of the major web browser search engines in China, along with a frequently used maps app. Baidu has promoted its Ernie chatbot as a local alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which isn't available in China. "AI Cloud continued to show healthy and sustainable development in the third quarter," he said in the earnings release.

Gautam Adani, India’s second-richest person, has been charged by U.S. federal prosecutors with fraud on accusations that he and several alleged co-conspirators sought to pay $250 million in alleged bribes to Indian officials. The defendants then “lied about the bribery scheme as they sought to raise capital from U.S. and international investors.”The scheme, according to prosecutors, occurred between 2020 and 2024. Gautam Adani, worth approximately $70 billion according to Forbes, heads the Adani Group, an industrial conglomerate that holds stakes in logistics and energy units. The findings from the short-seller, Hindenburg Research, caused Adani Group shares to tumble — but they ended up recovering following a favorable ruling related to the allegations by India’s Supreme Court. Adani has also received direct support from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, something India’s opposition party has highlighted.

Voters in California have narrowly rejected a ballot measure that would have gradually increased the minimum wage in the state to $18 per hour, NBC News projected Wednesday. It’s the first time a ballot measure proposing to raise the statewide minimum wage has failed nationwide since 1996. Some cities within New York also implement a minimum wage of $16 per hour, while Washington state’s minimum wage is $16.26 per hour. The defeat is the first time in 28 years that a ballot measure to increase a state minimum wage was defeated. Meanwhile, ballot measures in two other states to increase the minimum wage overwhelmingly passed this month.

President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday named former Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as his pick for the next ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a key alliance that Trump derided for years. He served just three months in the position until Bill Barr was confirmed as attorney general. Before becoming acting attorney general, Whitaker served as chief of staff to Sessions when he was attorney general. Trump has long criticized NATO, accusing European allies of not contributing enough toward defense spending. In February, Hillary Clinton warned that Trump would seek to withdraw the U.S. from NATO if he were to be re-elected.

Target reported earnings Wednesday that came in far below Wall Street's expectations, something the big-box retailer attributed to slower-than-expected demand. The company announced profits that missed forecasts by 20%, its widest miss in two years. Broader stock trading did not immediately react, however, as Wall Street awaits earnings from chipmaker Nvidia, which has helped power the market higher throughout the year. Target's report comes a day after rival Walmart reported earnings and revenues that beat expectations. “We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey told CNBC.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesDonald Trump's U.S. election victory has ratcheted up concerns about higher prices, prompting strategists to rethink the outlook for global bond yields and currencies. Trump's return to the White House is seen as likely to throw a wrench in the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting cycle, potentially keeping an upward bias on Treasury yields. Bond yields tend to rise when market participants expect higher prices or a growing budget deficit. "Trump's election advances both possibilities as a trade war and increased fiscal spending work at cross purposes," he added. Germany's 10-year bond yield, the benchmark for the euro zone, stood at 2.337% on Wednesday, marginally lower for the session.

AdvertisementI first went to law school in Mexico, where people were more open to friendships. However, the top three global financial hubs (New York, London, and Singapore) belong to common law countries. The US has a common law system, meaning that laws come from uncodified case law resulting from court decisions. Law schools in Mexico take a more theoretical approach, while law schools in the US focus on the practical side. In my case, both law schools made sure we acknowledged this in order to understand how useful we can be.

Giraffe populations are declining at such an alarming rate — from habitat loss, poaching, urbanization and climate change-fueled drought — that US wildlife officials announced a proposal on Wednesday to help protect several of the species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing many giraffe species as either endangered or threatened. It’s the first time the long-necked mammals, native to Africa, would receive federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. Declaring a species “endangered” is the most severe level of threat under the law, indicating the species is at immediate risk of extinction. The US has become a significant market for giraffe parts and products, importing nearly 40,000 for at least a decade-long period, a 2018 report showed.

In January this year, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in a briefing that “dozens of Chinese nationals, including international students, have been forcibly deported by the US each month.” He decried it as “discriminatory,” urging the US to protect the rights of Chinese students abroad. The euro has declined rapidly, meanwhile, briefly dipping below $1.05 on Nov. 14 for the first time since October 2023. Modeling by Barclays' economists shows the euro hitting dollar parity with a 10% tariff on European products and subsequent retaliation. The bank said the prospect of Trump tariffs and fiscal reforms had caused it to revise its view that the dollar would gradually decline through the year, instead seeing the U.S. currency "stronger for longer." Since hitting a low in September 2022, the euro has been comfortably back above parity even if below its long-range average. One of those 2022 factors roared back into focus this week, weighing broadly on European assets: the threat of escalating tensions with Russia.

Alaska Airlines partnered with Air Space Intelligence to use an AI tool that suggests flight routes. While Air Space Intelligence developed the Flyways AI Platform, it did so in close cooperation with the airline's stakeholders. AI in actionThe partnership between Alaska Airlines and Air Space Intelligence began with a learning period for both organizations. ASI's staff shadowed the airline's dispatchers to learn how they worked, while Alaska Airlines learned more about how a machine-learning algorithm could be used to route traffic. While that might seem low, those accepted routes helped reduce Alaska Airlines' fuel consumption by more than 1.2 million gallons in 2023, according to the airline's annual sustainability report.
