Constitutional amendments to protect or expand abortion passed in seven of the 10 states where they appeared on the ballot Tuesday, NBC News projects. Voters in Arizona and Missouri approved ballot initiatives that will effectively protect abortion rights until fetal viability and undo existing abortion laws on the books. But voters in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota rejected proposed amendments that would have done the same — becoming the first pro-abortion-rights ballot measures to fail since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The other amendment, that would have enshrined abortion rights until fetal viability in the conservative state’s constitution, was rejected. The defeats of the amendments in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota ended what had been an unbroken winning streak for ballot measures backing abortion rights in the 2½ years since the fall of Roe.

In the top-of-the-ticket presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump entered the day virtually deadlocked in national polling and surveys of the pivotal battleground states. CNN —Democrat Angela Alsobrooks will win the Maryland Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican former Gov. Her victory is a relief for Democrats, who were facing a daunting Senate landscape before this race came on the map. Neither made their history-making potential a key message on the trail, but it was resonant in a state where Black voters – and Black women in particular – are a crucial part of the electorate. Alsobrooks’ home turf of Prince George’s County is home to one of the largest middle-class Black populations in the country. The Democratic Party quickly united around Alsobrooks, who already had the backing of most of the state’s congressional delegation.

Some health experts said elevating Kennedy, even in an informal Trump administration position, could potentially lead to severe consequences for patients, drugmakers and the nation's public health overall. That could exacerbate the nation's existing public health challenges, such as declining childhood vaccination rates for several preventable diseases, some experts say. "I think we could reasonably predict that there would be a decline in vaccination rates among children, and perhaps vaccination overall." Drugmakers such as Pfizer and Moderna are still recovering from falling Covid vaccination rates in the U.S., which have dented their profits over the last two years. Kennedy's other proposals for overhauling federal health agencies will likely be difficult to execute.

Voting has now wrapped up in all seven swing states and most others. But no swing states have been called, and the race will hinge on their results. Bomb threats roiled polling places in swing states, including Georgia, Arizona and Michigan. Much to the delight of Oregonians, sans Beavers supporters, the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee chose the Ducks as the nation’s top team in the first edition of this season’s rankings. CFP’s Top 25 rankings were the committee’s first of the season, while the Associated Press (AP) poll and coaches’ poll have been running since the preseason.
