Hurricane Milton barreled into Florida's west coast Wednesday. AdvertisementHurricane Milton made landfall in Florida on Wednesday evening as a Category 3 storm. FEMA insisted Monday it had the "capacity to manage multiple simultaneous disasters," including Helene and Milton. As for FEMA funding, Criswell noted during the briefing that there is currently $11 billion in its Disaster Relief Fund and said she's evaluating whether it will be necessary to ask Congress for more. FEMA for two months had to pause $9 billion meant for communities still recovering from past disasters. In this case, for nearly two months, FEMA hoarded $9 billion to make up for delayed funding from Congress. But Biden-administration officials warn of another shortfall as soon as January, especially after Hurricane Milton slammed into the Tampa area late Wednesday. "So if FEMA delays reimbursements, local governments have to bear those costs, and they may put off recovery efforts. FEMA officials have repeatedly said they have enough resources to respond to Hurricane Helene and now Hurricane Milton but declined to specify how much disaster aid remained available.

President Trump — former President Trump — get a life, man. But, he warned, it has only been hours since Hurricane Milton made landfall and it was still too early to fully assess damages across the state. “Vice President Harris and I have been in constant contact with state and local officials,” the president added. Federal officials warned that in some cases the rumors are designed to prevent people who need help from seeking it. Biden has also spoken with numerous other lawmakers, including staunch Trump supporter and Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott.

Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congressman with Georgia, is now saying the federal government is literally controlling the weather — we're controlling the weather. It’s got to stop," Biden said during a virtual briefing at the White House as he received updates about Hurricane Milton. Greene said in an Oct. 3 post on X: "Yes they can control the weather. "The NOAA government website has a library catalog of 1,026 entries of weather modifications, but that’s not all of them." On Tuesday, she quoted an article from The Gateway Pundit, a far-right website known for spreading conspiracy theories, that said: "Marjorie Taylor Greene was right.

“Yes, we have the resources that we need, both for the Helene response and for Hurricane Milton,” Keith Turi, FEMA’s acting associate administrator, said this week. Staffing at the federal disaster response agency has drawn criticism in recent years from the Government Accountability Office, a federal watchdog. In that same report, the GAO found that as of July 2022, FEMA was involved in responding to 500 open disasters. NBC News reported last week that FEMA put out a call for volunteers for a “surge force” in mid-September, citing a “severe shortfall” in some of its disaster response teams. In an interview, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said the numbers cited fail to take into account other full-time staff members who are deployed as needed.

Sen via Getty ImageSteady rain hit the Tampa area Wednesday morning and winds are expected to increase in the afternoon as Floridians rush to prepare for Hurricane Milton. The storm continues to fluctuate in intensity as it approaches the state's west coast and is expected to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, the second-highest rating. As of Wednesday morning, a storm surge warning is in effect for the central to southern west coast of Florida, including Tampa. Vehicles move through a partially flooded street in Dunedin ahead of Hurricane Milton's expected landfall tonight on October 9, 2024 in Florida. The hurricane will likely make landfall late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, according to the NHC.

Neither Harris nor Trump outline specific disaster-relief policies on their website. "Disasters are always political," Thomas Birkland, a political scientist at North Carolina State University who studies the politics of national disasters, told Business Insider. When he was president, Trump responded to several hurricanes. "A charitable interpretation would be mixed on crisis management," Birkland told BI about Trump's past responses to natural disasters. Presidents are somewhat limited in their disaster responses — both Kneeland and Birkland told BI that states and local governments lead disaster responses, with the federal government's assistance.

The severe solar storm, classified as a level 4 on a scale from 1 to 5, also could disrupt communications, the power grid and satellite operations, according to officials at the center. “Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface,” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. But if the storm escalates to a G5, auroras could be visible across southern states and elsewhere around the world. Before then, the last G5 storm to hit Earth was in 2003, resulting in power outages in Sweden and damaging power transformers in South Africa. The solar storm in May was the most successfully mitigated space weather storm in history, Dahl said.

CNN —Long before the outer bands of Hurricane Milton lashed the Florida coast, a political battle over the massive storm was already raging. This time, partly because Trump pushed so hard to exploit last week’s Hurricane Helene for his political gain, the sparring has started early. A storm of this size could give Trump a political openingTrump has repeatedly shown there’s no situation he will not try to leverage for political gain. “I’ve had storms under both President Trump and President Biden, and I’ve worked well with both of them. Unlike Harris, Biden had kinder words for DeSantis, saying on Tuesday that the governor had been “cooperative.”“I said no, ‘You’re doing a great job, it’s all being done well, we thank you for it,’” Biden said.

Later Wednesday, the White House said Biden had spoken by phone with officials in Florida in advance of Hurricane Milton making landfall. Harris’ visible role on the storm response comes as Hurricane Helene and now Milton have become part of the 2024 campaign, with less than four weeks to go before Election Day. She’s been making statements on issues that don’t typically fall under the purview of her official role as vice president. Her campaign has been consumed in recent days by the latest hurricane as it is working to evacuate staff, pause voter outreach across Florida and keep an eye on potential early voting ramifications following Hurricane Helene in a battleground state like North Carolina. It’s not unusual for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to have to respond to rumors surrounding any given natural disaster. This week, President Joe Biden requested a memorandum from his team on the federal government’s digital response, including how officials were remediating misinformation, a senior administration official told CNN. “The contours of this misinformation are unlike anything we’ve seen before,” a senior administration official told CNN. CNN previously reported that there were 30 midair near-collisions involving noncommercial flights in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene on Saturday, September 28. Vice President Kamala Harris criticized former President Donald Trump on Monday over false claims he has made talking about disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Helene. Harris told reporters that there's a lot of "disinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, in particular to the survivors of Helene," from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A Trump campaign spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night. Trump last week amplified a false claim about FEMA's disaster funds, saying they were being distributed to migrants who entered the U.S. illegally. “It’s really a shame that we’re putting politics ahead of helping people, and that’s what we’re here to do,” Criswell said.

A torrent of false claims has muddied details around the recovery efforts following the storm, which left hundreds dead and entire communities destroyed. That weariness has been echoed by other local officials and citizens who are still reeling from one of the worst storms in U.S. history. Trump used his high-profile return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was nearly killed by a gunman, to continue to spread false claims about FEMA. Even as some claims were quickly debunked, more continued to surface across platforms such as X, TikTok and Facebook. Perhaps the most important thing to bring with you: a “go bag” full of emergency supplies. Go bags exist to save you from having to run around and gather items when a threatening situation is imminent. The contents of a family’s go bag could mean the difference between life or death, depending on how bad a situation becomes, according to Jonathan Sury, senior staff associate at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, or NCDP, at Columbia Climate School. Your must-havesMost of the items disaster preparedness experts suggest you include in a go bag are things you can find around your house. Just because someone puts together a “go bag” does not mean that person is prepared, Montano warned.

New York CNN —Even as Florida braces for another major hurricane, new estimates reveal Hurricane Helene caused up to $47.5 billion in losses for property owners. CoreLogic estimates Helene caused between $20 billion and $30 billion of uninsured flood losses. That dwarfs the firm’s estimate of between $10.5 billion and $17.5 billion worth of uninsured wind and flood losses. All told, CoreLogic calculates that Hurricane Helene caused between $30.5 billion and $47.5 billion in total wind and flood losses across 16 states. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is running out of staff to deal with the potential devastation of Hurricane Milton as it barreled toward Tampa with wind speeds that reached 175 miles per hour. As of Monday morning, just 9 percent of FEMA’s personnel, or 1,217 people, were available to respond to the hurricane or other disasters, according to the agency’s daily operations briefing. To put that into context: Over the previous five years, one-quarter of the agency’s staff was available for deployment at this point in the hurricane season. The agency said Monday afternoon that it is well equipped to handle the strains. “FEMA is built for this,” said Leiloni Stainsby, the agency’s deputy associate administrator for response and recovery.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The president noted that the White House requested more funding for the program as Congress prepared a short-term funding bill that passed last month to avert a government shutdown. Pressed on whether he would call Congress back into session before the election, Johnson replied, "We'll be back in session immediately after the election." Johnson's comments come after Biden said in remarks at the White House last week he expects to ask Congress for a supplemental funding request for areas affected by Hurricane Helene. "The American people are disgusted by this, up with it, and so are Republicans in Congress," he said.
