Rivian's "one more thing" was a nod to Steve Jobs' habit of teasing a last product reveal at events. Scaringe stunned his audience with the reveal of the R3 midsize crossover, catching the audience by surprise. That comment — and perhaps the whole surprise reveal — was a thinly veiled reference to Apple cofounder Steve Jobs' habit of making last-minute product announcements, introducing "one more thing" after seemingly finishing his keynote speech. AdvertisementBut the R3 wasn't the only surprise that Scaringe had up his sleeve, who added that "there's one more thing." Apple shares have shed roughly 14.5% from their all-time high of $199.62 each and nearly $3.1 trillion market value on Dec. 14, 2023. Apple on Monday announced new versions of its 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops with its latest M3 chip. The M3 chip first launched in October, when Apple launched versions of the chip for its iMac desktop computer and more powerful versions of the processor for its MacBook Pro laptops. The new M3 chip allows users to add up to two external displays, an improvement from a single screen supported by earlier chips. It called the new MacBook Air the "world's best consumer laptop for AI." The 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,099, while the 15-inch starts at $1,299.

Apple expands self-service repair program to latest M3 Macs
  + stars: | 2024-02-29 | by ( Ashley Capoot | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Apple on Thursday said it is expanding its self-service repair program to include its MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by the latest M3 chip. The program, which Apple announced in 2021, allows consumers to fix their own devices by giving them access to the company's manuals and legitimate Apple parts. Parts are available to customers through Apple's self-service repair online store. The program has covered earlier models of Apple's iPhones and Macs, but the expansion will cover iMac and MacBook Pro models that use its M3 chip, announced in October. In a release Thursday, Apple said its repair program helps extend its devices' longevity, which is "good for users and good for the planet."

For companies that specialize in this area, like Best Buy, that has contributed to several years now of sluggish sales. AdvertisementBeyond the pull-forward effects, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry laid some of the blame for the continuing sales lull at the feet of tech brands. Indeed, tech companies haven't exactly inspired shoppers to race into their nearest Best Buy for an upgrade, especially when they could buy tickets to a Taylor Swift concert instead. Other tech companies are tossing some bold ideas at the walls too. Either way, whatever the next buzzy tech may be, Barry says Best Buy would love for you to come check it out in their stores.

A self-proclaimed hardware hacker modded his AirPods Max to have a USB-C charging port. It's rumored that Apple's next generation of the headphones will ditch the Lightning port for USB-C. But Pillonel wasn't willing to wait, dubbing his modified headphones the "World's First USB-C AirPods Max" in his video description. Apple Takes Messaging Crackdown to Customers’ Macs

When Apple blocked the Beeper Mini app last month from giving Android users access to the tech giant’s messaging service, Beeper encouraged customers to use their Mac computers instead to connect and continue sending messages. But in recent days, dozens of Beeper customers have reported that they no longer have access to Apple’s messaging service on their Android phones or their Mac computers. Several have called Apple’s customer support and been told that the company had revoked their Mac’s access to iMessage because of irregular activity. For Beeper customers, many of whom prefer Android devices to iPhones but favor Mac computers over PCs, Apple’s move shows just how far the company will go to maintain control over its services. In these instances, Apple cut off one of the services that it provided with its computers because it had objected to the way its customers used it.

Ever bought a discounted new phone from Apple? But in China, Apple is slashing the price of some of its latest iPhones by $70 amid worries that Chinese consumers have cooled on the brand. That would save a buyer about 6 to 8 percent, based on prices on Apple’s China website. Cutting prices on high-end electronics to buyers in China is an unexpected move for Apple, one that highlights the challenges the American company faces in China, where patriotic shoppers are choosing domestic brands amid rising US-China tensions. Apple and its Chinese rival, Huawei, are on the front lines of a battle over technology between Beijing and Washington that has seen both countries restrict access to foreign technology.

Apple and Nvidia are "own, don't trade" stocks, so should they be kept as they are, or shrink down? First, let's address our idea of "own, don't trade" stocks. To main a diversified portfolio, we don't want any of our positions, even Apple, to get much bigger than 5-6%. That doesn't mean we don't love the name or no longer view it as an "own, don't trade," it simply means that while it is an "own, don't trade" we also still abide by the view that discipline trumps conviction (diversification and not don't be greedy being the two disciplines of focus in this case) and that overrides the own, don't trade mantra. When we say "don't trade" these two names, we stay invested in both and don't try to catch the next 10% move up or down.

However, the reason Apple is designated an "own it, don't trade" stock is because near-term catalysts are less important than the longer-term trajectory. If 2023 taught us anything it's that the stock market will always surprise you. We think the best approach is to not worry too much about quarterly dynamics, and focus on the longer-term drivers of Apple stock.
