WASHINGTON — The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday proposed prohibiting key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads due to national security concerns, a move that would effectively bar Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market. The planned regulation, first reported by Reuters, would also force American and other major automakers in years ahead to remove key Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States. President Joe Biden’s administration has raised concerns about data collection by connected Chinese vehicles on U.S. drivers and infrastructure and potential foreign manipulation of vehicles connected to the internet and navigation systems. The proposed prohibitions would prevent testing of self-driving cars on U.S. roads by Chinese automakers and extend to vehicle software and hardware produced by Russia and could be extended to other U.S. adversaries. CNN —The US Commerce Department on Monday will propose a ban on the sale or import of smart vehicles that use specific Chinese or Russian technology because of national security concerns, according to US officials. The rule would not apply to cars already on the road in the US that already have Chinese software installed, a senior administration official told CNN. The software ban would take effect for vehicles for “model year” 2027 and the hardware ban for “model year” 2030, according to the Commerce Department. If millions more smart cars with vulnerable, Chinese-made tech are on US roads, “the risk of disruption and sabotage increases dramatically,” he said. “China opposes the US’s broadening of the concept of national security and the discriminatory actions taken against Chinese companies and products,” said Lin Jian, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement.

TOKYO — A 10-year-old student at a Japanese school in China died Thursday after being stabbed on the way to school the day before, Japanese officials said, as they demanded that Beijing do more to protect Japanese nationals in the country. Lin said the boy was a Japanese national whose parents are Japanese and Chinese citizens. “Effective measures will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of foreigners in China, including people from Japan,” he said. PARIS — Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment after a rain of criticism and false claims about her sex during the Paris Olympics, her lawyer said Sunday. The complaint was filed Friday with a special unit in the Paris prosecutor’s office for combating online hate speech, alleging “aggravated cyber-harassment” targeting Khelif, lawyer Nabil Boudi said. In a statement, he described it as a “misogynist, racist and sexist campaign” against the boxer. As is common in French law, the complaint doesn’t name an alleged perpetrator but leaves it to investigators to determine who could be at fault. False claims that Khelif was transgender or a man erupted online, and the International Olympic Committee defended her and denounced those peddling misinformation.

PARIS — Lin Yu-ting captured featherweight gold on Saturday, defeating Poland’s Julia Szeremeta and shaking off more than a week of specious allegations that she shouldn’t be fighting in the women’s division. The gold medalist is listed at 5-foot-9 and her Polish opponent at 5-foot-5, but the disparity appeared to be greater in real life, with Lin punching downhill and rarely being threatened. Lin and welterweight gold medalist Imane Khelif of Algeria have both dealt with a firestorm of questions from opponents wrongly questioning their gender since they entered Olympic competition. Questions surrounding their gender stemmed from a decision by the Russian-led International Boxing Association to disqualify them at last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi. The IBA removed those two fighters from a competition at the time, saying they had tests that questioned their gender eligibility.
