Seoul, South Korea CNN —Declaring martial law in a stable and boisterous democracy was an audacious gamble – and one that appears to have backfired spectacularly for South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol. But the president’s short-lived declaration of martial law still felt like an attack to the heart of the country’s democracy. Helicopters fly after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, in Seoul, South Korea, on December 4, 2024. Soldiers try to enter the National Assembly building in Seoul on December 4 2024, after South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law. Many believe the botched martial law and subsequent democratic proceedings show that South Korean democracy is alive and well.

Bitcoin's rally to new heights signals even more momentum for a stock market that's also at all-time highs, according to Fundstrat's Tom Lee. "I don't think $100,000 is the ceiling." He told CNBC he was confident that the digital currency would top $100,000 before year-end. Last month, he called for a year-end stock market rally fueled by investor de-risking and "animal spirits" driving postelection gains, largely on hopes of greater deregulation. He's also said that small-cap stocks could get a boost from Federal Reserve interest rate cuts and Trump's business-friendly stances.

Athvisions | E+ | Getty ImagesGlobal food prices recently rose to an 18-month high, with some food baskets expected to continue climbing, according to market watchers. In October, world food commodity prices were at their highest since April 2023, according to the most recent data compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO Food Price Index, which monitors the prices of five food baskets: grains, meat, dairy, vegetable oils and sugar, rose by 2% in October, driven primarily by a surge in vegetable oil prices. The index measures raw commodity prices rather than retail costs, but the increase suggests that higher food prices may continue to affect consumers. While coffee and cocoa prices are not reflected in the FAO index, prices of the two commodities face the "most risk," said Biggin.

Biden’s senior aides inside the White House have been deliberating for weeks about the possibility of issuing preemptive pardons, according to the sources familiar with the discussions. One former senior White House official said aides inside the White House and across various federal agencies are intensely worried about the possibility that the incoming Trump administration will prosecute anyone deemed as having antagonized the president-elect. “Why not do it?”A White House spokesperson declined to comment. The former White House official who spoke to CNN, who is intimately familiar with the workings of the White House counsel’s office, said it would be typical for Siskel and his team to first put together a detailed memo to be presented to Biden. “It’s just such a different use of the pardon power,” said Neil Eggleston, former White House counsel to President Barack Obama.

The martial law order, South Korea’s first since 1980, was reversed so quickly that many South Koreans weren’t aware of it until they woke up on Wednesday. People her age who had experienced martial law under the military dictatorship rushed to convenience stores to buy canned food, she said. Biden, who hosted Yoon for a state visit to Washington last year, has worked to enhance military and other ties with South Korea as a deterrent against China and North Korea, establishing a new trilateral security partnership with South Korea and its historic rival Japan. Earlier this year, South Korea became the first country outside the U.S. to host Biden’s annual Summit for Democracy. As South Korea grapples with political instability, the U.S. “should remain a steadfast ally,” Easley said.

That’s an unnerving reality for the United States military, which has nearly 30,000 troops and its largest overseas base in South Korea, serving as a check against a belligerent North Korea and counterweight to an aggressive China in a strategically critical region. ‘Major ramifications’The US-South Korea alliance has long been seen by both countries as a cornerstone of peace in the region, where North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and the US with its illegal weapons program. “Any instability in South Korea has major ramifications for our Indo-Pacific policies,” retired US Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, pointing to how US troops in the country are geared for a “fight tonight” scenario against North Korea. “We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise,” he said. And Yoon, who’s taken a harder line on North Korea than many of his predecessors, has been a willingly staunch partner of the US.

Victory, but no mandateMr. Yoon, a conservative leader, has never been popular in South Korea. The vote, analysts said, was more a referendum on his liberal predecessor’s failures than an endorsement of Mr. Yoon. “Peace is meaningless unless it is backed by power,” Mr. Yoon said during the campaign. An election fueled by vitriolMr. Yoon’s party had seen the 2024 elections as an opportunity to win back the chamber. “I call on the National Assembly,” he said, “to immediately stop the outrageous behavior that is paralyzing the functioning of the country with impeachments, legislative manipulation and budget manipulation.”Image Police officers by the National Assembly.
