Rafael was moving west across the Gulf of Mexico Friday morning as the first major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico in November for almost 40 years, bringing the threat of life-threatening conditions to the southern United States coastline. Forecasters said the storm could cause dangerous surf and rip-tides across the whole Gulf region in the coming days, after causing havoc in Cuba where millions are still without power. ET Rafael was 585 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande with sustained wind speeds of 120 mph, making it a Category 3 hurricane, moving west at a rate of 9 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Rafael is now tied with Hurricane Kate in 1985 as the strongest storms recorded in the Gulf. The storm is expected to weaken throughout the weekend, but it could still produce tropical storm-force winds — which is between 39 and 73 mph — up to 115 miles from its center.

It's probably been the hardest year in my life," William told NBC News' international partner, Sky News, at the end of a weeklong tour in Cape Town, South Africa, for the fourth annual Earthshot Prize. King Charles III announced his cancer diagnosis in February following a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. "Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult," William, Prince of Wales, told Sky. "It's interesting you say that, ’cause I couldn't be less relaxed this year," he told Sky.

Long-term capital gains rates apply to assets owned for more than one year. Higher capital gains tax rates, however, are "entirely off the table," under a Trump presidency and Republican-controlled Congress, said Erica York, senior economist and research manager with the Tax Foundation's Center for Federal Tax Policy. Even with partial Republican control, "it's most likely that capital gains tax policy just stays put where it is," York explained. For 2024, investors pay long-term capital gains rates of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on taxable income. Combined with long-term capital gains taxes, higher earners currently pay up to 23.8% on investments.

Rosenfeld said about two-thirds of Steve Madden's business are U.S. imports. Of that, he said, "we currently source a little bit more than 70% of those goods from China." That means slightly less than half of its business would be at risk of tariffs on Chinese imports, he said. He said the company has moved more of its production outside of China since tariffs began under Trump's first administration.

While Republicans secured a Senate majority, control of the House remains uncertain. If Democrats flip the House, we could see "more gridlock" in Congress, which could stall Trump's agenda, Gleckman explained.

Andrew Bret Wallis | The Image Bank | Getty ImagesAfter a spouse dies, some retirees face a costly surprise — higher taxes. The shift from married filing jointly to single on future tax returns can trigger a "survivor's penalty," depending on whether your income changes. After that, older survivors typically use the "single" filing status, which may have higher tax rates, with narrower tax brackets and a smaller standard deduction. The IRS recently unveiled higher tax brackets and standard deductions for 2025. The survivor's penalty affects American women more often than men, because women are more likely to outlive male spouses.

As millions of Americans cast ballots on election day, advisors are bracing for major tax changes that could be on the horizon. Enacted by former President Donald Trump, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, or TCJA, brought sweeping changes for individuals, including lower tax brackets, higher standard deductions, a more generous child tax credit and a bigger estate and gift tax exemption, among others. Many of the individual TCJA provisions will sunset after 2025 without action from Congress, which will be a key issue for the next president, policy experts say. However, planning can be complicated with several tax provisions scheduled to sunset, experts say.
