CNN —As a nod to late designer Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for pearls, Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala look was drenched in them. So we wanted to just be dripping in pearls,” Kardashian said of her custom Schiaparelli ensemble on Vogue’s livestream from the red carpet in New York Monday night. Her 2021 Met Gala look wasn’t any less provocative; she wore a “faceless” Balenciaga gown that completely covered her in black from head to toe. Kylie wore a bright red custom Jean Paul Gaultier gown under an oversized red and baby blue coat, both pieces from designer Haider Ackermann. CNN —Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, did not make an appearance at the Met Gala, despite the event’s theme honoring her late owner. Doja Cat and Jared Leto both channeled the blue cream Birman with their Met Gala looks, transforming into Choupette in a mishmash of camp, couture and cat. The Grammy-winning rapper wore a silvery hooded Oscar de la Renta gown — complete with cat ears — along with feline facial prosthetics and sharpened talons on her nails. Choupette, 11, was expected by many to attend this year’s event given how important she was to Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. But she opted to “stay peacefully and cozy at home,” her agents said Monday, rather than hog the spotlight at the Met.

Nicole Kidman and her husband, Keith Urban, were among the first celebrities to arrive inside the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday for the Costume Institute benefit, honoring the designer Karl Lagerfeld. The couple was accompanied by Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin. For the cameras, Ms. Kidman, with her long, strawberry blond locks, in a swath of peachy fabric, seemed to float toward Mr. Luhrmann’s side, in front of a towering centerpiece featuring hundreds of one-liter plastic bottles sourced from a recycling plant. The light of many flash bulbs reflected off the bottles, lighting Mr. Luhrmann’s face as he fluffed Ms. Kidman’s train, gesturing with his hands, softly, toward her face. Ms. Kidman, who starred in Mr. Luhrmann’s films “Moulin Rouge!” and “Australia,” poked her chin up, meeting the director’s hand in midair.

The guest list for the first Monday in May, as the Met Gala is also known, serves as a Rorschach test for whom Anna Wintour deems important, circa now. Many guests wore black and white or suits and gowns embellished with pearls or flowers — favorite motifs of Mr. Lagerfeld. Doja Cat and Jared Leto each paid homage to Choupette, Mr. Lagerfeld’s feline friend. There were many wonderful dresses that paid respect to Mr. Lagerfeld’s legacy — in fact, there were too many to name. So here’s a reminder: The looks that follow did the most at the Met Gala — not necessarily the best, not necessarily the worst, just the most.

The twice Olympic champion has pledged to advocate for the release of other Americans detained abroad after she was freed from Russia in a high-profile prisoner exchange after nearly 10 months of detention. "I was able to come home," Griner told Vogue at the gala. "It is everything, to be here with my wife able to be here it means so much," Griner said. Twenty-times Grand Slam winner Roger Federer served as a co-chair of the event while China's twice Olympic champion freestyle skier Eileen Gu was also in attendance.

The worlds of celebrity, fashion, politics, sports, business and art collide at the Met Gala, always held on the first Monday in May. The invitees posed, giving the crowds and cameras angle after angle for prime gawking. Mr. Leto wasn’t the only one who deconstructed an outfit. Janelle Monáe’s Thom Browne hoop skirt transformed into a sequined bikini. And Lil Nas X didn’t have much to take off, having arrived in full silver body paint, bejeweled thong and an elaborate mask.
CNN —The Met Gala is an evening of style, glamour and… baby news. In a pair of stylish debuts, tennis world champ Serena Williams and model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss both stepped on to the Met Gala red carpet on Monday in New York City sporting very special accessories: babies on the way. “There’s three of us here,” Wiliams told Lala Anthony during Vogue’s live red carpet show. Karl Lagerfeld, the German-born fashion designer who is the subject of this year’s Met Gala, liked to court controversy, his achievements on the runway often outshone by offensive blunders and tone-deaf remarks. The set piece, sculpted from 240 tons of snow and ice reportedly sheared off a glacier in Sweden, was intended as a comment on global warming. As vividly inscribed on fashion’s consciousness was his spring 2015 Chanel show in Paris, staged as a feminist protest. But the joke seemed to be on the designer when, in 1994, he sent Claudia Schiffer down the runway in a Chanel dress embroidered with a sacred Muslim text, igniting an international controversy. Mr. Lagerfeld, who said at the time that he had no idea what the text meant, issued a rare apology.
Had Choupette deigned to attend the Met Gala, she would have joined many other immaculately groomed guests with elite pedigrees. Choupette, the Birman cat once owned by Karl Lagerfeld, led a life of decadence by the designer’s side. In Vogue’s recent tribute to Mr. Lagerfeld, she lolled over the arm of a windswept Naomi Campbell. She received an invitation to the Met Gala celebrating her onetime owner, according to her agent, Lucas Bérullier. (Like anyone who’s anyone in fashion, Choupette has an entourage.)
NEW YORK—At this year’s Met Gala, the celebrity-packed museum fundraiser held on the first Monday in May, the most anticipated guest is a cat. Choupette Lagerfeld, an 11-year-old Birman with enormous blue eyes and silky white fur, belonged to Karl Lagerfeld, the late German fashion designer and honoree of this year’s ball. For the former creative director of Chanel, Fendi and Chloé, who died in 2019 at the age of 85 without children, Choupette may be the closest thing to a living relative. Fans are hoping to see her strut the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in his honor.
Through talent, longevity and sheer productivity, it is possible that Karl Lagerfeld did more than any other designer to shape the look of the latter 20th century and the early 21st century. Across more than six decades, five different brands (three at the same time) and numerous collaborations, he flooded the zone from Paris to Dallas to Shanghai, dressing Hollywood, the haute and the high street. But why tell when we can show? Here are some of the most notable looks from nearly every stage of an extraordinary career.
Quiz: How Well Do You Know Karl Lagerfeld?

Everybody knows that you’re nobody until you’re a Halloween costume, and when it comes to Karl Lagerfeld, there’s no shortage of signifiers for would-be cosplayers to draw on. OK, this one was downright sadistic, but in fact, it was 18th-century France that most fascinated the designer. Mr. Lagerfeld furnished his 18th-century townhouse with 18th-century pieces, arranged in a traditional 18th-century fashion. “The 18th century was very vigorous and healthy,” Mr. Lagerfeld once told Le Monde. “It is because of its energy that I love it, and because it has the proportions that best correspond to the way that a human being should live.”

On Thursday, Musk tweeted that he's personally funding some celebrities' Twitter Blue statuses — but did not specifically say whose subscriptions he's paying for. It's unclear who's paying for the Twitter Blue subscriptions on Hybe's and BTS' official accounts. Other K-Pop groups have also refused to give Musk $8 for Twitter Blue.

New YorkFashion designers love the jump from homo sapiens to home, which liberates them from necklines, hemlines, and everything in between. One thinks of the über-modernist Halston, the floors and furniture in his Paul Rudolph townhouse sheathed in lean industrial gray, flocks of white orchids sailing in the stillness. Or of the changeless Bill Blass , the masculine classicism of his poised Sutton Place living room an escape from the WASP shmattes demanded by his East Side clientele. Or of the quixotic Karl Lagerfeld , chasing one period vision after another through serial homes decorated to the nth degree, costly statements of style that bored him once done. These postwar men were actually following in female footsteps.
