Sustainable aviation fuel is an alternative to fossil-based jet fuel made from refining used cooking oil and waste animal fats. Further expansion efforts happening at Neste's renewable refinery in The Netherlands are anticipated to boost capacity to a whopping 2.2 million tons by 2026. The results indicated the company's readiness to incorporate renewable fuel into its fuel mix. The Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines (AAPA), comprising 14 member airlines, including Singapore Airlines, pledged to use up to 5% SAF by 2030. In 2024, Singapore plans to launch the Singapore Sustainable Hub Blueprint, aiming to bolster the market for SAF.

Nov 10 (Reuters) - French-Dutch airline AirFrance-KLM (AIRF.PA) has made a $4.7 million investment in DG Fuels' Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production plant in the U.S. state of Louisiana, a step towards its 10% SAF incorportation target for 2030. "Air France-KLM acquired an option to purchase up to 25 million gallons / 75,000 tons of SAF annually over a multi-year period beginning in 2029," the group said in a press release on Friday. Sustainable aviation fuels, which use waste such as cooking oils and have either net-zero CO2 emissions or lower CO2 emissions than kerosene, a fossil fuel, are seen as an option to curb air travel's carbon footprint. The European Union has adopted rules requiring flights departing from EU airports to carry a progressively increasing amount of SAF, starting from 2% of total fuel in 2025. There’s a difference between ground speed and speed in the air (indicated air speed, essentially the speed of the plane in relation to the air around it). The jet stream explainedThe jet stream is a “core of strong winds around five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface, blowing from west to east,” as the UK’s Met Office describes it. Seven miles above the planet’s surface is equivalent to around 37,000 feet – which means that aircraft at cruising altitude slip easily into the jet stream. “This increase in the temperature gradient is amplifying the speed of the jet stream, which is driven by temperature differences. Either way, these planes are saving time and money.”The jet stream is making planes go around 200mph faster than average.

Intra-European travel has been doing very well," said aviation analyst James Halstead, adding that limited planes meant ticket prices could stay high. Britain's easyJet (EZJ.L) said earlier this month it wanted to more than double profits and expand its fleet, even though fuel prices could mean higher ticket prices. Spot Northwest European jet fuel prices were at $957 per metric ton on Wednesday, up 5% from before the assault. JET FUELSome airlines have already warned that rising fuel costs will drive up ticket prices or dampen future earnings.
