New York CNN —Rupert Murdoch’s Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post sued Perplexity on Monday, accusing the generative AI company of illegally scraping its reporting and diverting traffic to its own platforms. The News Corp-owned companies accused Perplexity of training its so-called answer machine with copyrighted material, using scraped human-created news content to generate responses to users’ questions, allowing them to circumvent the publishers’ websites. “Perplexity proudly states that users can ‘skip the links’ — apparently, Perplexity wants to skip the check.”A Perplexity spokesperson did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. Earlier this year, News Corp inked a massive deal with ChatGPT creator OpenAI, licensing its news content in an agreement reported to be worth more than $250 million. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller on Monday signaled that future interest rate cuts will be less aggressive than the big move in September as he expressed concern that the economy could still be running at a hotter-than-desired pace. The Federal Open Market Committee at its September meeting took the unusual step of lowering its baseline interest rate by a half percentage point, or 50 basis points, to a target range of 4.75%-5.0%. Along with the cut, officials indicated the likelihood of another half point lopped off in the final two meetings of 2024, along with another full percentage point of cuts in 2025. In the final revision for second-quarter growth, the Commerce Department also punched up the level of gross domestic income gain to 3.4%, an adjustment of 2.1 percentage points from the previous estimate and closer in line with GDP. “These revisions suggest that the economy is much stronger than previously thought, with little indication of a major slowdown in economic activity,” Waller said.

Multiple news organizations and free press groups have accused the Israeli military of deliberately targeting journalists. “One year in, Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza has exacted an unprecedented and horrific toll on Palestinian journalists and the region’s media landscape,” CPJ said. Four Israeli journalists were killed in the October 7 attacks, and others barely survived. The raw footage is also subject to Israeli military censorship. In New York City, a group of veteran journalists are trying to fill the gap. The group is tentatively called the New York Editorial Board, according to Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who helped assemble it in recent weeks. The self-styled board – “a group of journalists grilling politicians,” Smith said – is partly a reaction to The New York Times’ announcement in August that its editorial board will no longer endorse candidates in New York’s local elections. The timing is especially notable in the wake of last week’s indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, raising the possibility of a nonpartisan special election if he resigns. Politicians, they hope, will feel obliged to participate given the prominence of the local journalists going back generations.

Jennifer Ann Crecente, a high school girl murdered in 2006, recently reappeared as a chatbot on Character.ai. It had been 18 years since Jennifer Ann, a high school senior and Crecente's only child, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in Austin. Grieving, Crecente had started a nonprofit in her name, working since 2006 to raise awareness for teenage dating violence.
