Our commitment to Cruise with the goal of commercialization remains steadfast.”Federal and state safety regulators are investigating a series of accidents involving driverless Cruise vehicles. The central bank extended its pause on interest-rate hikes , trampling expectations of higher rates and causing investors to lock down higher yields while they still can. Joseph Wang, a former trader on the Fed's Open Market Trading Desk, says other than that, Powell's speech was uneventful. While Treasury yields have been dropping all week, Wang believes it's a temporary reaction. In the past, if Treasury yields suddenly became very high, banks could step in and buy the bonds. Wang says investors should opt for two-year notes because they're much more sensitive to potential Fed rate cuts, which would increase the price on those bonds.

He said the UAW's new contracts were so good they had even led to nonunion auto workers getting raises. Honda (7267.T) told Reuters it was evaluating the recent UAW deals with the Detroit Three automakers and would remain competitive. "If (Toyota workers) come calling, which they have, we're going to educate them and be there for them," Smith told Reuters. Toyota's move earlier this week to raise wages is in line with the strategy the Japanese automaker and other nonunion automakers have used to keep UAW organizers at bay. Nonunion automakers have kept hourly wages close to the UAW rates at the Detroit Three.

MADRID (AP) — The heir to the Spanish throne, Princess Leonor, swore allegiance to her country's Constitution on her 18th birthday Tuesday, laying the groundwork for her eventual succession as queen when the time comes. Leonor de Borbón Ortiz recited the same oath as her father did when he — then prince — turned 18 in 1986. Leonor became crown princess when Felipe VI was proclaimed king on June 19, 2014. The royal family — Leonor, younger sister Sofia, Felipe and Queen Letizia — arrived at the parliament building escorted by a mounted squadron of Spain's Royal Guard. Juan Carlos, 85, who abdicated in 2014, left Spain for Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, in 2020 amid a cloud of financial scandals.

The GM workers will return to work after an official announcement of the deal, two sources said. Ford shares fell 2% while Stellantis shares were down 1.5% in Milan. Excluding Monday's share moves, GM and Ford shares have lost roughly a fifth of their value since the strike began while Stellantis shares have fallen 1%. A United Auto Workers On Strike sign is seen outside the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan U.S. October 25, 2023. The following are issues highlighted by UAW leaders:* Ford will invest $8.1 billion in renovating factories and adding new models. * Raises of 33% or more for many workers over the life of the contract, including cost-of-living adjustments that push up wages in line with inflation. At the top end, workers will see an extra $70,000 in pay over the contract. * Lowest-paid temporary workers could see wages rise 150%* Pathway for battery and electric vehicle plants to come under the union agreement at commensurate pay rates.

GM said it was disappointed by the UAW strike at Spring Hill and that it still seeks "to reach an agreement as quickly as possible." Spring Hill Manufacturing, an assembly and propulsion plant, is the largest GM facility in North America with nearly 4,000 total employees. A lengthy Spring Hill strike could greatly increase the financial pain for GM, which said in a filing earlier this week that strike costs had risen to $400 million a week. Moments before employees walked out in Tennessee, the UAW said it reached a tentative labor agreement with Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW previously struck GM assembly plants in Missouri and Michigan as well as 18 parts distribution warehouses.

It is not clear what derailed GM and the UAW's progress toward an agreement patterned after earlier deals at Ford and Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Pension costs and issues involving the use of temporary workers were among the points of contention at GM, sources said. GM said it was disappointed by the UAW decision to strike Spring Hill. Last month, UAW workers at Mack Truck's U.S. operations overwhelmingly rejected a deal recommended by Fain. In 2015, UAW members at what is now Stellantis voted down a contract endorsed by union leadership.

A public deal announcement with Stellantis is expected later Saturday afternoon or early evening, the sources said. Stellantis shuttered its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, early this year, leaving 1,300 workers without jobs. The tentative contract deal will have provisions on the use of temporary workers, the sources said, adding Stellantis has agreed to significant investment. Fain and other senior union leaders are briefing local UAW chiefs by video conference, the sources said. The deal is also expected to include investments in other U.S. plants, including the Trenton engine plant, the sources said.
