There are currently a handful of electric trucks for purchase in the U.S. market: the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and General Motors' GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado. DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 “Classic” vehicle is not unexpected, but the company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck.

Production of the Jeep Wagoneer at the same facility will remain on two shifts, the company said. As production of the Ram 1500 Classic winds down later this year, the company is shifting focus to the Ram 1500 Tradesman truck, produced at its Sterling Heights Assembly facility. “We introduced the new 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman with incredible value and content. Southern California boasts the highest concentration of chrome plating shops in America and regulators in that state have been requiring those methods for years. But California is now moving toward an outright ban on chrome plating using hexavalent chromium while offering funding for chrome platers to transition to other methods. In 2019, green slime oozing out onto a highway near Detroit was found to be hexavalent chromium leaking from a nearby business. “We are also using light as the new chrome,” VW said in a statement shared with CNN. “Chrome peaked in the ’50s with the big American land yachts and stuff with giant chrome bumpers and giant chrome grills.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Stellantis expects to grow sales of Jeep vehicles globally by 50% in the next three years, as the automaker attempts to leverage the quintessential American SUV brand for increased profits. The transatlantic automaker on Thursday said it will expand production and sales to roughly 1.5 million units by 2027. To do so, the company will grow its vehicle and powertrain offerings. Jeep plans to expand its vehicle nameplates from 10 to 13 by 2027, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa said Thursday during Stellantis's investor day at its North American headquarters. Much of the expected growth is targeted in North America, where the brand aims to top sales of 1 million units by 2027, up from roughly 700,000 last year.
