Just over seven months ago, the talented pseudonymous writer Trace Woodgrains wrote an essay announcing the Republican Party’s doom — not the doom of electoral irrelevance, since the G.O.P. Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate and the recent surge of support for Trump’s campaign from Silicon Valley, Woodgrains reconsidered the durability of his diagnosis. The Vance pick, he wrote, suggests that “the G.O.P. is looking to make an appeal to anti-woke Silicon Valley or finance types to fill the void left by the Republican Party’s competency crisis,” with Vance himself as an exemplar of what a right-leaning counter-elite might look like. suddenly has more support in Silicon Valley than in 2020 or 2016.

J.D. Vance, Breaking the Beard Barrier
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Not to mention the first millennial on a major party ticket. One unmistakable detail that — in the style of his running mate, Donald J. Trump — not only upended modern political wisdom, but broke a longstanding political taboo. The last bearded man elected president of the United States was Benjamin Harrison, in 1888. The last vice president with a mustache was Charles Curtis, who was Herbert Hoover’s veep. And the last major party candidate to try to break that clean-shaven streak was Thomas E. Dewey, who had a dapper little caterpillar on his upper lip and ran, unsuccessfully, for the highest office in 1944 and 1948.

J.D. Vance Becomes Trump’s New Apprentice

Speaking Wednesday at the Republican National Convention, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio became the latest, and potentially most consequential, of Donald J. Trump’s apprentices to accept the position in prime time. For years as the host of “The Apprentice,” Mr. Trump picked out protégés from boardrooms full of young supplicants. Offend him and you might be dismissed; appear too thirsty and you could get the boot as well. Mr. Vance spent much of his two years in the Senate auditioning for the promotion to vice-presidential nominee, cultivating a relationship, apologizing for his Never-Trumper apostasy and recently blaming Biden campaign rhetoric for leading “directly” to the assassination attempt against Mr. Trump.

Much has been made of the political pirouette J.D. Vance executed to secure the embrace of Donald J. Trump, a man he once called “cultural heroin” before seeking his endorsement for the Senate and, Wednesday night, accepting the Republican nomination to be his vice president. Old friends and former classmates have expressed bewilderment at the seemingly irreconcilable versions of Mr. Vance. Mr. Vance used his personal account of overcoming dysfunctional Appalachian family values to tell a larger story about forgotten Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he leaned again into those themes, at one point drawing attention to his mother, “who struggled with money and addiction but never gave up.” She stood in the audience when he continued, “And I’m proud to say that tonight my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober.”

Vance, the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, has embraced a vision to lift the American working class with policies that would break radically with Republican economic orthodoxy, and at times with former President Donald J. Trump’s own plans. Now he faces questions from left-leaning and right-leaning economists on whether it would actually work. The broad vision, laid out in the Ohio senator’s acceptance speech on Wednesday night and through interviews and detailed somewhat in the truncated Republican platform, seeks to raise wages and restore American manufacturing in two basic ways: impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports to favor American-made products, and reduce downward pressure on wages by deporting millions of undocumented immigrants and narrowing the path into the country for legal immigrants. Meantime, the Republican platform, adopted just ahead of the convention, pledges to end inflation, increase energy production, stop sending manufacturing jobs overseas, cut taxes for workers and corporations, keep the dollar the world’s reserve currency and protect the largest domestic programs, Social Security and Medicare, from any cuts.

Usha Vance and the Iconography of the Trump Women

Vance, the newly nominated vice-presidential candidate, may represent the new generation of the MAGA movement. But, as became clear Wednesday night when Usha Vance stepped gingerly into the spotlight to introduce her husband at the Republican convention, his wife represents change of a different kind. It’s because she does not hew to the very specific mold of femininity that has become the norm in the world of Trump. It calls to mind a cross between a Miss America — or Miss Universe — pageant contestant and a Fox newscaster. It is the equivalent of the Palm Beach billionaire take on the trad wife (even if these wives also have work).

Vance Will Introduce Himself to American Voters

Vance is 39 years old and has spent just 18 months as the junior senator from Ohio; he had never even attended a national political convention before this year. But tonight, the newly minted Republican vice-presidential nominee will introduce himself to millions of Americans as one of the party’s most powerful figures. You can expect Vance to use the prime-time address to tell his personal story, our political correspondent Michael Bender told me. So far, Vance has received a mostly warm welcome in Milwaukee, where the party’s convention is in its third day. “We’re at a moment in time right now where Trump can do no wrong in the party’s eyes,” Michael said.

J.D. Vance’s A.I. Agenda: Reduce Regulation
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Cecilia Kang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Vance, Republican of Ohio, is a strong skeptic of regulating artificial intelligence. He’s also in favor of reining in Big Tech, companies he says have grown so powerful that they stymie smaller companies’ ability to succeed. That seeming contradiction could play a role in shaping the Trump administration’s stance on A.I. And he has strong ties with some of the tech industry’s most powerful backers, many of whom fund smaller A.I. Last week, during a committee hearing on privacy and A.I., Mr. Vance accused Big Tech companies of predicting that A.I.

There’s No Zealot Like a Trump Convert
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Jess Bidgood | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Today, I’m looking at how the Republican National Convention has become a conversion story. His long history of disparaging Trump, whom he has called an “idiot” and “cultural heroin,” does not make him less suited for elevation within his party. Rather, it makes him a better avatar for the tale Trump wants to tell. Vance is a political convert, whose remaking of himself and his political image in order to thrive in Trump’s Republican Party proves and reinforces Trump’s power. And he will serve as a capstone for a convention that has been a conversion story unto itself.

Senator J.D. Portraying himself as a child of Appalachia with a deep appreciation for the “grit in the American heartland,” Mr. Vance effectively framed his nomination as one for Mr. Trump’s white, working-class political base. He said he would be guided by the lessons learned from “Mamaw,” his deeply religious, foul-mouthed grandmother who raised him, and the memories of the friends and acquaintances from his old neighborhood who died of drug overdoses. “I pledge to every American, no matter your party, I will give everything I have,” Mr. Vance said. “To serve you and to make this country a place where every dream you have for yourself, your family and your country will be possible once again.”
