Six people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in crashes caused by “excessive winds” that blew dust from nearby farms onto Interstate 55 in a rural section of central Illinois, on Monday morning, leading to “zero visibility” conditions, the Illinois State Police said. The crashes, which took place just before 11 a.m. in Farmersville, Ill., south of Springfield, involved about 20 commercial vehicles and 40 to 60 cars, including two tractor-trailers that caught fire, the police said in a statement. The people injured were between 2 and 80 years old, and their injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening, the authorities said, noting that it had been difficult to extract people from their vehicles, some of which were engulfed in flames. “This is a difficult scene, something that is very hard to train for something that we really haven’t experienced locally,” Kevin Schott, the director of Montgomery County’s emergency management agency, said at a news conference on Monday.
Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas are facing off in the Chicago mayoral runoff election. The winning candidate will succeed Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who was the third-place finisher in the initial Feb. 28 mayoral election behind Vallas and Johnson, respectively, missing her chance to compete in the runoff. Garcia came in fourth place in the February mayoral election; in 2015, he was also a mayoral candidate, forcing then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel into a runoff election, which he eventually lost. According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, Vallas raised $6.4 million in the lead-up to the initial February mayoral election and has raked in at least $10.9 million since March 1. Johnson raised nearly $4 million before the February election and has taken in at least $5.8 million since March 1.
Legal disputes are ongoing to determine what damages Boeing might owe families of crash victims. Boeing attorneys say they don't have to pay for pain felt by passengers because they crashed too fast to feel pain. Boeing's lawyers said in the filing that under Illinois law, damages can only be paid for crash victims "conscious pain and suffering" if there is verifiable evidence that suffering occurred. Indeed, about 64% of Hispanic workers, 53% of Black workers and 45% of Asian American workers have no access to a workplace retirement plan, according to AARP. State-facilitated individual retirement account savings programs have stepped in to attempt to close that racial savings gap. As of the end of January, there were more than $735 million in assets in these state-facilitated retirement savings programs, the center found. How it worksRather than competing against large corporate retirement plans, state-facilitated retirement savings programs turn their focus toward an underserved corner of the market: small businesses. Most of these state programs require businesses to either offer a workplace retirement plan or to help automatically enroll their workers into the state's program.
JB and I are not on speaking terms these days," said Ken Griffin, the billionaire hedge-fund manager, referring to JB Pritzker, the Democratic governor of Illinois. As Florida rolled back pandemic restrictions more quickly than Chicago, even more Citadel employees migrated south. Ken Griffin's hedge fund has had a run of eye-popping returns since 2020. Others worry that it gives Griffin's hedge fund an unfair advantage. Hundreds of Citadel employees, partners, and families gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida.

Jan 11 (Reuters) - Illinois has banned the sale of many common kinds of semiautomatic guns with immediate effect in response to a massacre at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park last year and other mass shootings. The new law, which Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed on Tuesday evening, bans selling many kinds of weapons that automatically load the next bullet after a shot, including semiautomatic rifles and pistols with detachable magazines. The law lists dozens of popular gun brands made by U.S. gun makers. Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said the law affects nearly 2.5 million gun owners in the state and his group would sue to reverse the ban. Brady, a national group advocating against gun violence, said the ban would save lives.
The father of the Highland Park, Illinois, parade shooting suspect has been charged in connection with helping his son obtain a firearm and ammunition, officials announced Friday. The shooting suspect was 21 at the time of the attack but 19 when he bought the semiautomatic rifle and ammunition, they said. Crimo Jr. turned himself in to Highland Park police Friday afternoon. Authorities allege the shooting suspect climbed to the top of a Highland Park building, used that elevated spot as a sniper’s nest, and opened fire on people attending the town’s July Fourth parade. Crimo Jr. is a former Highland Park mayoral candidate who has voiced support for Second Amendment protections.

Amendment 1 would alter the state's constitution to add a right to collective bargaining. Ballot measure detailsAmendment 1 would add language to the state's constitution that gives employees the fundamental right to organize and collectively bargain at their workplaces to negotiate "wages, hours, and working conditions." Supporters argue that this will enshrine the right to unionize and protect employees from anti-union initiatives and laws that would make collective bargaining more difficult. Opposition to this measure includes the Illinois Policy Institute and the Illinois Republican Party, which argues that the amendment will give union organizations too much power and make it more difficult for business owners to operate in the state. The money raceAccording to Illinois State Board of Elections filings, $13.6 million has been raised in support of Amendment 1.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, known as CISA, offers the services on a voluntary basis. But some election information does run through the internet, like voting registration, official information about how and where to vote, and election officials’ email systems. The sources declined to say which states and election jurisdictions have not received the help they asked for, or how many. State and local election officials sought to beef up their security software after the 2019 report from special counsel Robert Mueller revealed Russian interference in the 2016 election. “And we have made this the top priority at CISA over the past year to ensure that we are supporting those election officials.”
They wish to remain anonymous, only to say that they were "over the moon" about winning the jackpot, lottery officials say. Despite the reduced payout and upfront tax costs, a lump sum payment is the most commonly chosen payout. After taxes, the total payout comes to about $453 million between the two winners, or $250 million each. That's because with the lump sum option, the $780.5 million payout would be subject to a 37% federal income tax, the highest bracket for top earners. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million, according to MegaMillions.com.
